    Walk to Work Day

Walk to Work Day, an unofficial holiday, is annually observed on the first Friday of April in the United States. So just wear comfortable walking shoes and walk to work. If you have to drive or take public transport to your workplace, why not walk to your lunch instead?

    Read a Road Map Day

Also known as National Read a Road Map Day, the unofficial holiday in America is a throwback to what the kids today call the "old days" before GPS, which falls on April 5 each year. When was the last time you picked up a paper map and used it for directions? So take a short road trip and use only paper maps to guide you.

    Sorry Charlie Day

April 6 every year is Sorry Charlie Day, a day to recognize that everyone gets rejected sometimes. The name of the holiday comes from Sorry Charlie, popular in the United States, which is now commonly used as a response to someone who has experienced a rejection. On this day, treat yourself because you didn't let any rejections let you down and reflect on what you learned from each of them.

    Siblings Day

Celebrated annually on April 10, the day created by New Yorker Claudia Evart aims to celebrate the very important but often under-appreciated bond of love, friendship, and respect shared between siblings(兄弟姐妹). Since 1998, US government and governors of 39 states in the U. S. have officially recognized Siblings Day as an observance. On this day, do something special to celebrate your siblings, such as visiting them unexpectedly or throwing a party for them.

    21. What does Read a Road Map Day encourage people to do?

    A. Go on a trip in an outdated way.         B. Pay family members a surprise visit.

    C. Treat themselves for being rejected.      D. Take public transport to workplaces.

    22. Which holiday has a connection with a phrase?

    A. Walk to Work Day.      B. Read a Road Map Day.

    23. What do the four "Days" have in common?

    A. People have a day off on the "Days".       B. They are all held in April every year.

    C. One state of the USA celebrates them.      D. The "Days" aren't recognized officially.

Kumar is ten years old and works with his father in New Delhi. Every morning, while carrying plastic bags on his shoulders, he runs into children walking to school, ashamed at not being in a school uniform like them. Kumar is one of India' s five million school dropouts. These are the children of villagers who moved to New Delhi but end up living in slums(贫民窟). Many of them, like Kumar's father, can't afford to send their children to school. Others are not able to provide birth certificates for their children, which are necessary for school admission.

However, two yellow buses-equipped as mobile schools with teaching materials such as books, whiteboard, pens and toys are helping them. They are part of the government's project which started in 2003.The books and school bags are free. Every morning, the yellow bus mobile schools arrive near selected slums. "If the children can't go to school, we have to take the school to them, to their doorstep," said Sharma, a mobile school teacher. Sharma said that at first parents hesitated to send their children to the mobile school because they were afraid that their children would be cheated. It took the teachers a long time to build their confidence.

Financed by the UK Department for International Development(DFID)in India, the mobile schools project has helped reduce the number of dropouts from 25 million to 5 million. The children are proud because the mobile school comes specially for them. It has changed their lives and given them hope. After joining the bus school, eleven-year-old Meena is very happy with her new life. Although she is young, she understands that education is the key to escaping the poverty. So impressed by her progress, other mothers were convinced to let their daughters attend the mobile school.

The mobile school teachers provide children with primary education to get them up to the level and then they go on with their studies in public schools.

    24. What keeps Kumar from going to school in New Delhi?

    A. His father has been uneducated.       B. He has no birth certificate of his.

Ukraine has reported that forest fires have broken out near the site of the world's worst nuclear accident.

The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant(CNPP)is about 100 kilometers away from Kyiv, Ukraine. In 1986, the CNPP had the worst nuclear accident in history. A series(系列)of mistakes and accidents caused an explosion and a huge fire, which burned for nine days. As a result of the disaster, entire cities had to be cleared. Over 100, 000 people had to leave their homes forever. A 2,600-square-kilometer area around the CNPP was set apart as the "Chernobyl Exclusion Zone" to keep people away from the radioactive pollution.

Much of the land in the Zone is forest and grassland. Radioactivity breaks down slowly over time, so the radiation has dropped some by now. The radioactive pollution has become part of the plants and the dirt in the area. But on April 4, fires broke out in the Zone, which can give off the radioactive pollution back into the air. Once the pollution is in the air, it can be spread by the wind. Over the last 10 (lays, hundreds of fire fighters have been struggling against the flames. One fire came close to the CNPP. Keeping fires away from the plant is important because dangerous and poisonous material is still stored there.

Fighting the fire was much more challenging than normal because of the radiation dangers. In some places, fire fighters dug ditches(壕沟)to stop the fire from spreading, however, most of their efforts went into pouring water from the air since they couldn't do the same in most areas.

Ukraine's government says that there are still some small grass fires, but there are no major open fires still burning. The government says radiation levels in the air in Kyiv and nearby areas are normal.

    28. Why does the author mention the CNPP?

    A. It has contributed to the recent fires        B. The recent fires broke out next to it.

    C. The fires will destroy its nearby forest.      D. It can be used to fight against the fires.

    29. Compared with regular ones, the forest fires in the Zone          .

    A. are more dangerous       B. are more frequent

    C. spread more quickly       D. last longer

    30. What was the firefighters' main job for the forest fires?

    A. Preventing poisonous materials escaping.      B. Ditching to stop the fires spreading.

    C. Dropping water to put out the fires.           D. Keeping people away from the CNPP.

    31. How is the outcome of firefighters' struggling against the fire?

    A. It's unclear.      B. It's unexpected.      C. It's discouraging.      D. It's effective.

    D

As many as five billion people, particularly in Africa and South Asia, are likely to face shortages of food and clean water in the coming decades. Hundreds of millions more could face increased risks of severe coastal storms, according to the first-ever model examining how nature and humans can survive together. "I hope no one is shocked that billions of people could be affected by 2050," says Rebecca Chaplin-Kramer, lead author of the paper Global Modeling Of Nature's Contributions To People published in Science, who is an ecologist at Stanford University.

Nature sees a frightening sight. Human activity has resulted in the severe change of more than 75 percent of Earth's land areas and 66 percent of the oceans, putting a million species(物种)at risk of being wiped out, according to the first-ever Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services.

Human well-being is dependent upon nature's contributions, also known as ecosystem services. The new model looked at three of nature's contributions or services: providing clean water, coastal protection, or crop pollination(授粉). The model shows that the future declines in those services will hit people in Africa and South Asia hardest because they are more directly dependent on nature, says Chaplin-Kramer in an interview. Wealthier countries can buffer the effects on them through imports of food and other basic things that help their people and economy.

We have got a "deeply worrying picture of the social burdens of losing nature," writes Patricia Balvanera, an ecologist at the Universidad Nacional Autc noma de Mexico in an accompanying article in Science. "What's really scary is that the model only looked at three of the 18 contributions to human well-being we've identified," says Balvanera in an interview.

    32. What does Rebecca Chaplin-Kramer mean by saying so in paragraph 1?

    A. We'll lack food and clean water by 2050.      B. We have much dependence on nature.

    C. We should face the serious situations.         D. We must prevent severe coastal storms.

    33. What can we infer about nature?

    A. We will surely lose its contributions.        B. Its contributions do harm to humans.

    C. It can offer mankind coastal protection.      D. Its services have been in sharp decline.

    34. What does the underlined word "buffer" mean in paragraph 3?

    A. Discover.      B. Use.      C. Reduce.       D. Predict.

    35. What's the text mainly talking about?

    A. The relationship between nature and humans.

    B. Three of nature's 18 contributions to humans.

    C. Human activities and environment protection.

    D. The first-ever model assessing mankind's needs.

    第二节(5小题;每小题2分,满分10)

    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

At the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, we study how important emotions(情绪)are to teachers. We find that teachers' emotions matter for five primary reasons.

Emotions matter for attention.   36   However, emotions like anxiety and fear, especially when kept long, throw teachers' concentration and thinking into disorder, which brings great trouble to their teaching work.

37   When we're feeling scared and stressed, the areas of our brains responsible for wise decision making also can become affected. People with the experiences of more positive states like joy and interest tend to evaluate individuals, places, and events more accurately compared to those experiencing more unpleasant emotions.

Emotions matter for relationships. How we feel and how we interpret the feelings of others send signals for other people to either approach or avoid us.   38   This can affect students' sense of safety in the classroom-and likely at home in a virtual learning environment-therefore having a negative influence on learning.

Emotions play an important role in teachers' health.   39   Stress has been shown to lead to serious health challenges, including depression and weight gain. Both the ability to regulate unpleasant emotions and the experience of more pleasant emotions have been shown to have health benefits.

40   Chronic(长期的)stress among teachers is linked to decreases in teacher motivation and engagement(参与度), both of which lead to burnout. Teachers who are burned out have poorer relationships with students and are also less likely to be positive role models for healthy self-regulation-for their students and their families.

    A. Emotions affect teachers' performance.

    B. Emotions are necessary for them to make decisions.

    C. Emotions are so vital to teachers' attention and health.

    D. How they feel influences them physically and mentally.

    E. Positive emotions are good for it and promote greater engagement.

    F. Teachers who express anxiety are likely to turn the cold shoulder to students.

    G. Pleasant emotions have been shown to increase mental flexibility and creativity.
