Students who want to attend an American college or university must explain how they will pay for their education. They have to show that they will he able to pay for each year of study. Students have to consider not only the tuition, the cost of classes, but also meals and a place to live in, which is known as room-and-hoard. They also need money for books and supplies. And they need money to spend on social activities and other things.
Educational advisers say foreign students should have enough money in a local hank to pay for at least two months of expenditure. So how much will a year at an American school cost? The University of Washington says foreign students are paying more than $36, 000 this year. This major research university currently has 2, 600 foreign students from more than one hundred countries. There are many schools that cost less, but also others that cost more. Its web site says the University of Washington does not offer financial assistance to international students. This is generally true of American schools, especially at the undergraduate level.
The international application for the university includes a Statement of Financial Responsibility that must be signed. Students must also provide a bank letter or statement from within the past six months. And they have to name someone who will help with payments. These people must send proof from a bank to show that they have the money. Your government or employer may he able to help you pay all or some of the college costs. A good idea is to ask at least eighteen months before you want to start classes in the United States.

Imagine, one day, getting out of bed in Beijing and being at your office in Shanghai in only a couple of hours, and then, after a full day of work, going back home to Beijing and having dinner there. Sounds unusual, doesn’t it? But it's not that unrealistic, with the development of China’s high-speed railway system. And that’s not all. China has an even greater high-speed railway plan-to connect the country with Southeast Asia, and eventually Eastern Europe.
China is negotiating(谈判)to extend its own high-speed railway network to 17 countries in 10 to 15 years, eventually reaching London and Singapore.
China has suggested three such projects. The first would possibly connect Kunming with Singapore, via Vietnam and Malaysia. The new system would still follow China’s high-speed railway standard. And the trains would he able to go 346 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as some airplanes.
Of course, there are many problems that need to be settled, such as safety, rail gauge(轨距), maintenance(维修)of railway tracks. So, it's important to pay attention to every detail. But the key problem is really money. China is already spending hundreds of billions of yuan on domestic(国内的)railway expansion.
China hopes that resources from other countries could stream into China to support development.
It'll he a win-win project. For other countries, the railway network will definitely create more opportunities for business, tourism and so on. Large gatherings such as weddings and conferences can be socially overwhelming. Pressure to learn people’s names only adds to the stress. A new facial-recognition app could come to the rescue, but privacy experts recommend proceeding with caution.
The app, called Social Recall, connects names with faces via smartphone cameras and facial recognition, potentially avoiding the need for formal introductions. "It breaks down these social harriers we all have when meeting somebody," says Barry Sandrew, who created the app and tested it at an event attended by about 1, 000 people.
After receiving an invitation to download Social Recall from an event organizer, the user is asked to take two selfies and sign in via social media. At the event, the app is active within a previously defined geographical area. When a user points his or her phone camera at an attendee’s face, the app identifies the individual, displays the person’s name, and links to his or her social media profile. To protect privacy, it recognizes only those who have agreed to participate. And the app’s creators say it automatically deletes users’ data after an event.
Ann Cavoukian, a privacy expert who runs the Privacy by Design Center of Excellence praises the app's creators for these protective measures. She cautions, however, that when people choose to share their personal information with the app, they should know that "there may be unintended consequences down the road with that information being used in another context that might come back to bite you".
The start-up has also developed a version of the app for individuals who suffer from prosopagnosia(脸盲症), or "face blindness", a condition that prevents people from recognizing individuals they have met. To use this app, a person first acquires an image of someone's face, from either the smartphone's camera or a photograph, and then tags it with a name. When the camera spots that same face in real life, the previously entered information is displayed. The collected data are stored only on a user's phone, according to the team behind the app.
32. What is Social Recall used for?
A. Identifying people. B. Organizing events. C. Taking photos. D. Making friends.
33. How does Social Recall help people with prosopagnosia?
A. By collecting information previously entered in the phones.
B. By providing the information of a person when they first meet.
C. By showing the person's information when it spots a stored face.
D. By giving names to the photos kept in their smartphones.
34. What can we learn about Social Recall from the passage?
A. It can prevent some communication disorders.
B. It may put people’s privacy at risk.
C. It has caused unintended consequences.
D. It is praised by users for its protective measures.
35. What can he the best title for the text?
A. New App Shares Personal Information.
B. A New App Called Social Recall Protects Privacy.
C. The Start-up of Social Recall Is a Great Success.
D. New App Helps People Remember Faces.

A light rain was falling as my sister Jill and I ran out of the shop, eager to get home and play with the presents that our parents had prepared for us and our baby sister, Sharon. Across the street from the shop was a gas station where the Greyhound bus stopped, which was closed for New Year, but I saw a family standing outside the locked door, gathering closely together under the narrow overhang in an attempt to keep dry. I wondered briefly why they were there but then forgot about them as I raced to keep up with Jill.
Once we got home, there was barely time to enjoy our presents. We had to go off to our grandparents’ house for our annual family dinner. As we drove down the highway through town, I noticed that the family was still there, standing outside the closed gas station.
My father was driving very slowly down the highway. The closer we got to the turnoff(岔道)for my grandparents’ house, the slower the car went. Suddenly, my father made a U-turn in the middle of the road and said that he couldn’t stand it. "What?" asked my mother. "It’s those people back there at the station, standing in the rain. They’ve got children. It’s New Year. I can’t stand it."
When my father pulled into the service station, I saw that there were five of them: the parents and three children-two girls and a small boy, who were getting wet standing there. My father rolled down his window. "Happy New Year," he said.
"Thanks. You, too," the man replied. He was very tall and had to bend slightly to look into the car. Jill, Sharon, and I looked at the children, and they looked back at us.
"You waiting on the bus?" my father asked. The man said that they were. They were going to Birmingham, where he had a brother and chances of a job. Knowing the bus wouldn’t come along for several hours, my father invited them to our home to shelter from the rain.

As for us students, please don’t order food that we can’t finish. Furthermore, let’s remind each other to clear the plate all the time or pack leftovers home.

The man thought about it for a moment, but then refused. He said he didn’t want to put us to any bother. My father explained that the rain would last long and our house was near the station. After my parents’ strong persuasion, he finally agreed and thanked us all the time. They climbed into the car. They had no luggage, only the clothes they were wearing. Once they settled in, my father looked back over his shoulder handing them some tissues to wipe the rainwater from their faces.
When we got out of the car at our house, the three children ran through the front door happily. My mother noticed all their clothes were wet, so she found some of ours for them to change. Jill and I decided to share our New Year presents with the children. One of the girls chose Jill’s doll and immediately hugged it to her breast. When the rain stopped, my father drove them to the station. As they drove away, I watched out the window as long as I could, looking back at their happy faces. That was the day when Jill and I learned the joy of making others happy.
