    OUR GUIDE TO GRIFFITH PARK
“You can see just about all of Los Angeles from Griffith Park,” Mike Eberts wrote 24 years ago in his centennial(百年纪念) history of the park covering 4,300 acres.
    Places Recommended
The Greek Theatre: From April to October you can catch a concert here if you prefer something more intimate than the Hollywood Bowl. Griffith himself oversaw the building of the outdoor theater that opened in 1930.
Griffith Observatory: It’s said that more people have explored the stars through the observatory’s solar telescope than anywhere else on Earth. This landmark, which opened in 1935, offers great views of the heavens and the Hollywood sign.
Besides the Greek Theatre and the Griffith Observatory, the park’s best-known attractions, there are camps for boys and girls, open lawns(草坪) and a lone mountain lion.
    Safety Measures
Social distancing: Like everywhere in L.A. County, all visitors are required to wear face coverings and stay at least six feet from others.
Stay found: It’s easy to lose your way in a place as big as Griffith Park. So use a map to plan your route. Then drop pins along your electronic course or use a GPS app such as Gaia to stay on track.
    Suggestions for a Tight Schedule
If you have just one day to explore the green heart of L.A., Schreiner suggests this itinerary(行程). Many of these sites are closed for now. To save time, go car-free and instead use ride shares, DASH shuttles, Metro trains and the new shuttle.
    21. Which activity can you do in Griffith Observatory?
    A. Observing stars. B. Seeing mountain lions.
    C. Attending concerts. D. Watching Hollywood films.
    22. What is a must for keeping safe in the Griffith Park?
    A. A telescope. B. A face covering. C. A GPS app. D. A pin.
    23. How are visitors with limited time advised to travel?
    A. Driving private cars. B. Travelling on foot.
    C. Riding bicycles. D. Using public transport.

    B
It is not rare in China that many seniors take advantage of their retirement years to please their grandchildren.
Some are good at sugar figure blowing art-the maker uses sugar as its basic material to boil and blow into various figures. Some can weave, using even the most unexpected materials such as leaves, and some excel in carpentry, using wood to carve lifelike dolls and toys.
Recently, in a small village in Fujian province, one- and -a-half-year-old Dandan became the most enviable child. His grandfather made a wooden “mantis cart(螳螂车)” for him. The wooden components on both sides of the cart would rise and fall with the metal wheels, resembling a mantis. This one-of-a-kind toy was filmed by the child’s parents and posted online, immediately arousing curiosity.
The grandfather, Li Shishui, 70, who has been a carpenter for more than 50 years, retired in 2018. In his spare time, he picks up his old craftsmanship and uses the scrap(小块) wood from his old house to make the “mantis cart” with long legs. He also makes pure wooden toys such as robots , birds and even an “Iron Man”.
When Dandan goes out in the “mantis cart”, it never fails to turn heads and children of the neighbors next door shout and cry to their parents for one too.
Full of childlike fun, fatherly love and delicate design, the wooden toy, not merely catches the heart of children in his neighbourhood, some netizens also express their envy after watching online videos. “I want a grandpa like him too.” “Does grandpa want a granddaughter?” Some also recollect that although their grandfather is not a carpenter, these videos have brought back their fond memories when they were young — their grandfather also made some gadgets(小物件) for them.
Therefore, many believe, parents should stress the importance of the education of their children’s interpersonal communication skills at an early age. Children who grow up in the love of their elders can expect to be more brave, positive, optimistic and confident than other children.
    24. What does the author mean by the underlined part “This one-of-a-kind toy”?
    A. The toy is hard-won.
    B. The toy is specially made.
    C. The toy is of high quality.

    B. Its online videos were not immediately accepted.
    C. Its insect-like features attract both children and adults.
    D. It was hand-made by Grandpa Li, a craftsman of sugar figures.
    26. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. Much importance should be attached to children’s behavior.
    B. Children under the care of their elders may have better personalities.
    C. Some netizens envy Dandan as their grandparents are not carpenters.
    D. Some children of the neighbors cry as Dandan doesn’t share the toy with them.
    27. Which section of a web page can this passage be taken from?
    A. Fashion. B. Entertainment. C. Lifestyle. D. Transportation.

    C

The last time you got angry, did you stop and listen to what your mind was telling you?
Ryan Martin, psychology professor at the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay, has spent his career doing just that. It turns out the thoughts that we have in response to the first flare(爆发) of anger are what can send us over the edge — or help us control the emotion for good, Martin says.
“Despite the trouble that it can cause, anger is not actually bad for us. From an evolutionary perspective, it plays an important role in our survival,” Martin says. “It helps alert us to the fact that we’ve been wronged.” When your heart starts to pound and your face gets hot, that’s anger increasing your blood flow in preparation for a showdown(决战). “It’s our fight or flight response, used to energize us to deal with injustice,” he explains.
Anger only becomes a problem when we can’t manage it. Managing your anger, it turns out, is all about managing your thoughts. While anger may inform us of a threat — even if it’s just to our reputation — it’s the thoughts that determine how we respond. That’s why strategies like cognitive behavioral therapy, which teach people healthier thought patterns, can be so successful.
Rather than ignore our anger, Martin wants us to see what our anger is telling us. If anger alerts us to possible injustice, for example, it’s not helpful to simply dismiss it. “What I really want is for people to have accurate thoughts, thoughts that accurately reflect what’s going on in the world around them,” Martin says.
    32. What is the purpose of Paragraph 1?
    A. To introduce a topic. B. To raise a question.
    C. To make a comparison. D. To put forward an argument.
    33. What is the positive side of anger?
    A. It makes us full of energy.
    B. It urges us to fight with others.
    C. It warns us if we are treated unjustly.
    D. It helps us survive in a dangerous situation.
    34. What determine(s) our action when we are threatened?
    A. Our anger. B. Our thoughts. C. Our determination. D. Our strategies.
    35. According to Martin, what should we do when we are angry?
    A. Seek medical treatment. B. Simply ignore the anger.
    C. Focus on the world around us. D. Notice the message anger tells us.

At the delivery ceremony in Beijing last Saturday morning, the sample 56 (bring) back by China’s Chang’e 5 was handed over to the president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
As it returned successfully, Chang’e 5 57 (become) the first lunar sample-return spacecraft since 1976. The sample, 58 includes 1,700 grams of lunar rocks and soil, is larger than previous ones. The great increase in its weight can be owed to Chang’e 5’s lunar orbit unmanned docking(会合) program, in which the two parts of Chang’e 5 can 59 (automatic) combine into a whole in orbit.
It is also important to note that the greatest 60 (amaze) of the journey is Chang’e 5’s lunar landing site-referred to 61 the Ocean of Storms-on the near side of the moon, where no probes(探测器) have paid 62 visit before. It’s geologically younger than the sampling 63 (area) of the US and the former Soviet missions, so the new sample will help fill in an important piece of the puzzle of the Moon’s history.

Henry got on his bike and began to deliver copies of the March 8, 1970, issue of The Gazette. Half an hour later, he threw the last newspaper onto the porch(门廊) at 35 Oak Street and cycled to The Gazette offices. There must be something important for the editor in chief to meet with an 11-year-old paperboy.
“No good way to deliver bad news,” Mr. Trotta greeted him when Henry stepped in. Henry’s smile faded.
“We’re closing shop, Henry. Advertising is down. Television is how people get their news today. Local papers are the first to close.” Mr. Trotta shrugged.
Henry couldn’t believe his ears, frozen to the spot. He thought of all hose people he had met on his route. They wouldn’t get their neighborhood news anymore!
“You were great, Henry — always dependable.” Mr. Trotta said. Henry forced his head up to say good-bye.
As he rode past the houses he knew so well he saw Mr. Grady on his porch, holding a broom(扫帚). Henry led him to a chair and cleaned the porch. They sat for a while as Mr. Grady recalled how happy he’d been moving his family to 10 Oak. He sounded lonely.
A week after his last deliveries, Henry wondered if his customers missed The Gazette as much as he did. He thought of a way to find out. He started out on his old route with a notebook.
Henry stopped at Mrs. Burke’s. She opened the door, holding the two babies. She asked him if he knew any neighbors with experience of looking after children.
Mr. Simon was next door, carrying his violin out. “Hey, Henry. My band is having à concert in the park his Friday. Tell ll your friends.”
As Henry made more notes, an idea started forming in his head. Maybe he could create a newsy page(小报) for the neighbors.
    Paragraph 1:
Neighbors cheered Henry’s idea, ready to offer information.

    Paragraph 2:
Henry’s first Oak Street News then produced desired effects.

    Dear Alex,
I’m writing to ask for your help. Our school is planning to hold an event called English Reading Month, in which we are required to read an English book and take notes.
I hope you can recommend an English book to me. Considering I’m not an advanced English learner, the book needs to be suitable for my level. It will be better if the book is about the life of teenagers. Meanwhile, I also feel confused about taking notes. Could you offer me some guidance?
I’d appreciate it if you could reply to me soon.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

Information in hand, Henry knocked at Mr. Trotta’s door and pleaded for his support in publishing his first Oak Street News, who approved almost immediately. Soon, Henry’s tabloid was in circulation, which he cheerfully delivered from door to door as before.
    Paragraph 2:
Henry’s first Oak Street News then produced desired effects. Neighbors applauded the idea of sharing their needs in a communal newspaper, which really addressed their immediate concern in a practical and efficient way. As Mrs. Burke successfully found an ideal baby sitter, Mr. Simon secured a large following for his concert and Mr. Grady who happily reunited with his kids, Henry realized, from his deep heart, that The Gazette was far from gone in this TV era, but transformed into Oak Street News that connected, bonded and tied the Oak neighbors in a cozy fabric.
