It makes people feel embarrassed and discouraged. What's worse, it may cause major professional or personal trouble and lead to negativity. Basically, failure is no fun for most people. However, a vast body of research tells us that failure provides us with a chance to grow and develop, increases adaptability, and helps protect against anxiety. It's hard to change the mindset (心态) of a lifetime. But even if we still can't get over the broken marriage or the failed College Entrance Examination or the work presentation that went fearfully wrong, it might not be too late for our kids.Christy Pennison, a professional consultant, says she works with an increasing number of kids and teens who show significant anxiety around a fear of failure. She said, "We want to protect our children, and we want them to live happy and meaningful lives, so we frequently tell them the harm of failure and ask them to avoid failure. The children experiencing internal and sometimes external pressure think they shouldn't fail. Meanwhile, we always have high expectations of them. So when they don't live up to a certain standard, or things don't go according to the plans, they will feel upset and anxious."Pennison argues that failures, are often the hidden learning chances that can help people develop positive qualities, like persistence, focus, flexibility, patience, and positive self-image.So what can parents do to help their children embrace (拥抱) failure instead of avoiding it at all costs? Pennison suggests directing praise towards the effort, not the result. "This allows children to build confidence in themselves, "she explains." Acknowledging the effort can give children permission to try new things without a fear of failure. And the bigger picture is that the development of the mindset —'I'd rather try and fail than not try at all.'—helps them keep a belief in themselves, and expands their world of possibilities." As Pennison points out, we all fail, but how we get up after we fail is what matters.24What aspect do most people focus on when thinking of failure?AThe great courage to face it.          BThe efforts made to handle it.CUnexpected benefits it brings.         DUnpleasant side effects it brings.25What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 2?ABring up the main topic.             BList the challenges in our life.CAdd some background information.     DStress the importance of the mindset26What is mainly talked about in the third paragraph?AThe causes of children's anxiety.BChristy Pennison's comments on adolescents.CThe consequences of overprotecting children.DChristy Pennison's experience in educating children.27Which of the following advice can help parents encourage kids to face failure? Praise kids' every achievement.      Make kids embrace a bright mindset. Focus on the process of kids' effort    Expand kids' knowledge about the world. Encourage kids to make new attempts.A①②④ B②③④ C②③⑤ D①③⑤C  The different parts of a health care system have different focuses. A hospital's stroke (中风) unit monitors blood flow in the brain. The cardiac unit is interested in that same flow, but through and from the heart. Each collection of equipment and data is effective in its own field. Thus, like the story of blind men feeling an elephant, modern health care offers many separate pictures of a patient, but rarely a useful united one.On top of all this, the instruments that doctors use to monitor health are often expensive, as is the training required to use them. That combined cost is too high for the medical system to scan regularly, for early signs of illness, so patients are at risk of heart disease or a stroke. An unusual research project called AlzEye, run by Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, in cooperation with University College, London (UCL) , may change this. It is attempting to use the eye as a window through which signals about the health of other organs could be discovered. The doctors in charge of it, Siegfried Wagner and Pearse Keane, are studying Moorfields' database of eye scans, which offers a detailed picture of the health of the retina (视网膜).The project will go a step furtherWith the information about other aspects of patients' health collected from other hospitals around England, doctors will be able to look for more accurate signs of disease through eye scans. The Moorfields data set has lots of linked cases to work with--far more than any similar project. For instance, the UK Biobank, one of the world's leading collections of medical data about individual people, contains 631 cases of a "major cardiac adverse event". The Moorfields data contain about 12, 000 such. The Biobank has data on about 1, 500 stroke patients. Moorfields has 11, 900. For the disease on which the Moorfields project will focus to start with dementia, the data set holds 15, 100 cases. The only comparable study has 86.Wagner and Keane are searching for patterns in the eye that show the emergence of disease elsewhere in the body. If such patterns could be recognized reliably, the potential impact would be huge.28Why does the author mention “the story of blind men feeling an elephant” in Paragraph 1?ATo claim the ineffectiveness of our health care system.BTo tell the similarity in various health care units.CTo explain the limitation of modern health care.DTo show the complexity of patients' pictures.29What does the underlined word "this" in Paragraph 3 refer to?AThe challenge of making advanced medical instruments.BThe high risk of getting a heart disease or a strokeCThe inconvenience of modern health care service.DThe incomplete and expensive health monitoring.30How does AlzEye work?ABy thoroughly examining one's body organs.BBy identifying one's state of health through eye scansCBy helping doctors discover one's diseases of the eyeDBy comparing the eye-scan data from different hospitals.31What can be inferred about the Moorfields's project from Paragraph 5?AIt takes advantage of abundantly available medical data.BIt makes the collection of medical data more convenient.CIt improves the Moorfields' competitiveness in the medical field.DIt strengthens data sharing between the Moorfields and the Biobank.D  Hardware in general, and smart phones in particular, have become a huge environmental and health problem in the Global South's landfill sites (垃圾填埋场).Electronic wastee-waste currently takes up 5 percent of all global waste, and it is set to increase rapidly as more of us own more than one smart phone, laptop and power bank. They end up in places like Agbogbloshie on the outskirts of Ghana's capital, Accra. It is the biggest e-waste dump in the world, where 10, 000 informal workers walk through tons of abandoned goods as part of an informal recycling process. They risk their health searching for the precious metals that are found in abandoned smart phones. But Agbogbloshie should not exist. The Basel Convention, a 1989 treaty, aims to prevent developed nations from unauthorized dumping of e-waste in less developed countries. The e-waste industry, however, circumvents the regulations by exporting e-waste labeled as "secondhand goods" to poor countries like Ghana, knowing full well that it is heading for a landfill site.A recent report found Agbogbloshie contained some of the most dangerous chemicals. This is not surprising: smart phones contain chemicals like mercury (水银),lead and even arsenic(砷). Reportedly, one egg from a free-range chicken in Agbogbloshie contained a certain chemical which can cause cancer and damage the immune system at a level that's about 220 times greater than a limit set by the European Food Safety AuthorityEFSA. Most worryingly, these poisonous chemicals are free to pollute the broader soil and water system. This should concern us all, since some of Ghana's top exports are cocoa and nuts. Some governments have started to take responsibility for their consumers' waste. For example, Germany has started a project that includes a sustainable (可持续的)recycling system at Agbogbloshie, along with a health clinic for workers. However, governments cannot solve the problem alone, as there is an almost limitless consumer demand for hardware, especially when governments green policies are focused on issues like climate change.Only the manufacturers can fix this. A more economically sustainable and politically possible solution is through encouraging hardware manufacturers to make the repair, reuse and recycling of hardware profitable, or at least cost-neutral.32What can we infer from Paragraph 2AElectronic products need improving urgently.BElectronic waste is too complex to get fully recycled.CElectronic waste requires more landfill sites across Ghana.DElectronic pollution is a burning question in Agbogbloshie.33What does the underlined word "circumvents" in Paragraph 3 meanATightens.  BAbolishes.    CGets around. DBrings in.34What should be the biggest concern according to the textAThe violation of EFSA's standards.  BThe lack of diversity in Ghana's exports.CThe damage to chicken's immune system. DThe threat of polluted food around the world.35What does the author think is the best solution to the e-waste problemAManufacturers' developing a sustainable hardware economy.BGovernments' adjusting their green policies about e-waste.CReducing customers 'demands for electronic products.DLetting governments take on the main responsibility.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)When planning for a new job, many people will go through a job interview. 36   Fear of the unknown, fear of public rejection and fear of personal criticism all come together in one meeting. So how should you prepare for a job interview It's often a combination of careful research, psychology and an ability to think on your feet. One way is to do a great deal of research, like finding the requirements of the job, the company's product lines, the industry's standard salary for the position, the interviewer, etc. When doing research, don't forget to learn about whether you have unique qualifications for the position. 37Thus, prepare your unique aspects which will make you stand out among interviewees ahead of time.38 Do you express your ideas clearly? Do you actively listen to others ? How you perform in the interview will leave a deep impression on the interviewers. Some job seekers prepare for a job interview by conducting their own mock (模拟的) interviews. A trusted friend or even a professional job coach can act as an interviewer, asking many of the same questions a real interviewer might ask. In view of your performance, these people may be able to point out your trouble spots.39There're also numerous resources job seekers can use to prepare for a job interview. 40 Many cities also have programs helping first-time workers find jobs. They may offer classes on how to prepare for a job interview or provide job coaches who can conduct mock interviews.AYou should consider how to be qualified.BSelf-help books may be available at public libraries.CAnother way is to work on your outward appearance.DIt can be one of the most stressful events in a person's life.E. Then, you can improve yourself by overcoming your weaknesses.F. Observing how you communicate with others is equally important.G.
