Pre-reading is the process of skimming a text to locate key ideas before carefully reading a text or a chapter of a text from start to finish, also called previewing or surveying. It provides an overview that can increase reading speed and efficiency and typically involves looking at and thinking about titles, chapter introductions, summaries, headings, subheadings, study questions, and conclusions.
It not only becomes necessary to skim, but essential to skim well. Pre-reading strategies allow you to think about what you already know about a given topic and predict what you will read or hear. Most importantly, you can use pre-reading strategies to increase your interest in a text.
Pre-reading encompasses all of the things that you do, before you start careful reading, to increase your ability to understand the material. In many cases, taking just a few minutes to learn more about what you are about to read can greatly increase your reading comprehension. If you build the big picture before you start, you begin reading the text with a conceptual framework already in place. Then, when you come across a new detail or a new bit of evidence in your reading, your mind will know what to do with it.
Pre-reading can be divided into four steps: preview, predict, prior knowledge, and purpose. You can remember these steps by thinking of them as the "4 Ps". Previewing is taking a quick look at a reading before trying to understand the whole thing. In predicting, you look at clues(线索)from what you read, see, or already know to figure out what information you are likely to get from the reading. Prior knowledge is what you know about a subject before you begin a new reading about it. The fourth "P" in pre-reading is purpose. Figuring out an author’s purpose will help you understand what you read.
The habit of skimming or pre-reading should not take much time to acquire and our main aim is to discover whether the book requires a more careful reading.
24. What’s the main idea of paragraphs 2 and 3 about pre-reading?
A. The procedures. B. The benefits. C. The tips. D. The contents.
25. Which of the following can replace the underlined word in Paragraph 3?
A. Includes. B. Improves. C. Confirms. D. Promotes.
26. Which step are you in when you’ve already learned something alike?
A. Preview. B. Predict. C. Prior knowledge. D. Purpose.
27. What’s the main purpose of pre-reading?
A. To judge the necessity of careful reading. B. To finish the reading as soon as possible.
C. To practice and strengthen reading skills. D. To get rid of the reading obstacles.

A new study, out of Japan’s Fukuoka University and presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s 72nd Annual Meeting in April, 2020, is so interesting. The researchers found that playing ping pong may lead to significant improvements in Parkinson’s symptoms.
"Ping pong, which is also called table tennis, is a form of aerobic(有氧的)exercise that has been shown in the general population to improve hand-eye coordination, sharpen reflexes, and stimulate the brain," said study author Ken-ichi Inoue, M. D., of Fukuoka University. "We wanted
to examine if people with Parkinson’s disease would see similar benefits that may in turn reduce some of their symptoms."
The study included 12 people(an average age of 73)with mild to moderate Parkinson’s disease, who had been diagnosed with Parkinson's for seven years on average. The participants were tested at the beginning of the study to assess the type and degree of symptoms they had. They then had a ping pong session once a week. The sessions included stretching exercises and specific ping pong exercises led by experienced table tennis players from the department of Sports Science of Fukuoka University.
The symptoms were then assessed again at three months and six months(at the end of the study), and during that period participants experienced significant improvements in speech, handwriting, getting dressed, getting out of bed and walking. For example, it took participants an average of more than two attempts to get out of bed at the beginning of the study compared to an average of one attempt at the end of the study. They also had significant improvements in facial expression, posture, rigidity(僵硬), slowness of movement and hand trembles.
"While this study is small, the results are encouraging because they show ping pong, a relatively inexpensive form of therapy, may improve some symptoms of Parkinson’s disease," said Inoue. "A much larger study is now being planned to confirm these findings."
28. Why does the author feel the new study is interesting?
A. Ping pong is a sport of great interest.
B. The process of the study is easy and relaxing.
C. The combination between sports and diseases is funny.
D. It excites curiosity that ping pong should improve Parkinson’s.
29. Which aspect do the 12 participants have in common?
A. Age. B. Gender. C. Disease. D. Degree.
30. How many times have the participants been assessed altogether?
A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 4.
31. What will Inoue probably do next according to the last paragraph?
A. Try other sports to draw new conclusions.
B. Get more people involved to further prove the findings.
C. Expand the range of diseases to match with ping pong.
D. Find out more connections between sports and diseases.

From counting and learning to communicating and caring for each other, the secret lives of trees are wildly deep and complex.
"They can count, learn and remember; nurse sick neighbors; warn each other of danger by sending electrical signals across a network known as the 'Wood Wide Web'-and, for reasons unknown, keep the ancient stumps(树桩)of long-fallen companions alive for centuries by feeding them a sugar solution through their roots." These are just a few of the secrets that Peter Wohlleben, a German forester and best-selling author, has learned about trees.
With a mix of scientific research and his own observations-the 51-year-old Wohllehen studied forestry and has worked in the forest since 1987-the man who speaks for the trees does so in decidedly anthropomorphic(拟人的)terms, while some German biologists question his use of language to describe life in the forest. But Wohllehen says this is exactly the point. "I use a very human language. Scientific language removes all the emotion, and people don’t understand it anymore. When I say, 'Trees feed their children,' everyone knows immediately what I mean."
After years working for the state forestry administration in Rhineland-Palatinate and then as a forester managing 3, 000 acres of woods near Cologne, he began to understand that contemporary practices were not serving the trees, or those who depend on them, very well.
"By artificially spacing out trees, the plantation forests that make up most of Germany’s woods ensure that trees get more sunlight and grow faster," notes The Times. "But, naturalists say, creating too much space between trees can disconnect them from their networks, preventing some of their inborn abilities."
After researching alternative approaches to forestry he began carrying out some revolutionary Concepts-he replaced heavy machinery with horses, stopped using insecticides(杀虫剂)and let the woods become wilder. The forest went from loss to profit in two years.
And now even a tree-loving writer in New York City is singing the praises of the German forester Peter Wohlleben and his meaningful understanding of the modest and massive neighbors who we share this planet with.
32. Which word can best describe the author’s attitude to Wohllehen?
A. Skeptical. B. Favorable. C. Prejudiced. D. Mixed.
33. What can be inferred about Wohlleben?
A. Besides forester, he is an American writer.
B. He isn’t satisfied with some practices to the trees.
C. Anthropomorphic language is rare in writing.
D. He knows how to communicate with trees.
34. Why does Paragraph 5 use the words from The Times?
A. To indicate Wohlleben's research has scientific basis.
B. To stress Germany focuses much attention on trees.
C. To show trees do have inborn abilities unlike human beings.
D. To advertise for the The Times to attract more readers.
35. What’s the most suitable title for the text?
A. We should learn modestly from trees B. Please value the endangered trees
C. Wohlleben has devoted 33 years to trees D. Trees in the forest are social beings
