As a kid, Janna Buckley wasn’t interested in science — until she had a chance t try it. That happened when she gt a chemistry set fr Christmas.
“Over the curse f a few weeks, I’d cmpleted every experiment. But in the prcess, I plluted my parent’s dining rm carpet and burnt the kitchen wrktp with the spirit burner,” she says.
Nw science is Buckley’s jb. She wrks in the chemistry department at the University f Sheffield in England. “I realize, first-hand, hw imprtant it is t have smething r smene t shw yu why science is s great,” she says. Nw the gd news is that citizen science appears.
Citizen science takes the fun f experimenting a step further than Buckley’s at-hme chemistry kit. That’s because these experiments are real, lking fr nvel answers.
“Cmpared with a ne-ff experiment, what’s cl abut citizen science is that students get that this has a purpse,” says Prunuske, wh teaches micrbilgy and immunlgy at a medical cllege. “Students want t d a gd jb, because they knw scientists are ging t use the new data in their wn research.”
Jennifer Lng’s jb is t crdinate(协调) educatin and utreach. She agrees with Prunuske. “Kids like that it’s real. And they like that it’s imprtant, that it matters.” Citizen-science prjects have made big discveries. One fund a previusly unknwn galaxy cluster (星系团). Anther prject helped assess hw much damage a big earthquake had caused in Japan. And ne f the first citizen-science prjects helped scientists learn where Mnarch butterflies g every winter.
Sme adults wrry abut teens lsing interest in science. That’s ne reasn they hpe that fun, exciting citizen-science prjects can help them keep engaged, Lng says. And she has sme evidence that it’s wrking, “Last year, we did have a cuple f students say, ‘I really think I want t be a scientist nw. ”

As reprted in JAMA Surgery, the researchers discvered that e-scter(电动摩托车) injury rates had increased dramatically in just fur years, rising frm 6 per 100,000 in the ppulatin t 19 per 100,000. Of the estimated 14,651 e-scter-related injuries in 2018, 4,658, r 32%, invlved the head. “While mst peple recver frm head injuries, there is ging t be a subset with lng-term disability and life changes,” said Dr. Benjamin Breyer.
Dr. Benjamin Breyer f the University f Califrnia, Ls Angeles, pinted t a 2019 analysis f the data frm tw hspitals in Suthern Califrnia, which fund just 4.8% f injured e-scter riders were wearing helmets.
Dr. Jann Elmre, a prfessr f medicine at the University f Califrnia, Ls Angeles, believed that mst e-scter users are prbably unaware f the risks. T make the pint, she described a pht taken by a clleague. “There were tw riders n an e-scter,” she said. “N ne had shes n. There were n helmets. And the wman in frnt had a baby in a baby carrier.”
The new reprt highlights the need fr mre research n new technlgies, said Dr. Guhua Li, a prfessr f epidemilgy(流行病学).
“Just as there is a glbal netwrk f experts wrking n infectius diseases, there needs t be a similar prgram devted t the surveillance(监视,监察) and preventin f injuries caused by merging technlgies prducts and lifestyles, such as e-scters, e-sprts, etc.,” Li said in an email.
“The challenge fr researchers and plicymakers is t keep up with the ever-changing sciety and prtect the public frm unnecessary harm caused by new technlgies and prducts withut hindering innvatin,” he added.
    28. What can we knw frm the passage?
    A. E-scter injury rates had increased due t speeding.
    B. 32% f injured e-scter riders weren’t wearing helmets.
    C. There is a prgram devted t the preventin f injuries caused by advanced technlgies.

Our ability t cllect data gets far ahead f ur ability t fully use it, yet data may hld the key t slving sme f the biggest glbal challenges facing us tday.
Take, fr instance, the frequent utbreaks f waterbrne diseases as a cnsequence f war r natural disasters. The mst recent example can be fund in the cuntry, where rughly 10,000 new suspected cases f chlera(霍乱) are reprted each week — and histry is filled with similar stries. What if we culd better understand the envirnmental factrs that cntributed t the disease, predict which cmmunities are at higher risk, and put in place prtective measures t stp the spread? Answers t this questin and thers like it culd ptentially help us prevent a catastrphe.
As a big data scientist, I studied data frm wide-ranging, public surces t identify patterns, hping t predict trends that culd be a threat t glbal security. Varius data streams are imprtant because the grund truth data (such as surveys) is ften delayed, limited, incrrect r, smetimes, nnexistent.
Fr example, knwing the incidence(发生率) f msquit-brne disease in cmmunities wuld help us predict the risk f msquit-spread disease such as dengue, the leading cause f illness and death in the trpics. Hwever, msquit data at a glbal (and even natinal) level is nt accessible.
T address this gap, we’re using ther surces such as satellite pictures, climate data and ppulatin infrmatin t frecast the risk f dengue. Specifically, we had success in predicting the spread f dengue in Brazil at the reginal, state and city level using these data streams as well as clinical bservatin data and nline searchers that used terms related t the disease. While ur predictins aren’t perfect, they shw prmise.
Similarly, t frecast the flu seasn, we have fund that nline searches can cmplement(补充) clinical data. Because the rate f peple searching the internet fr flu symptms ften increases during their beginning, we can predict a sharp increase in cases where clinical data delays. All f this shws the ptential f big data. The infrmatin is there; nw it’s time t use it.
    32. What d the examples in paragraphs 2 and 4 shw?
    A. Big data is still hard t get and use.
    B. Peple aren’t skilled at dealing with big data.
    C. Big data is nt always an imagined methd.
    D. Catastrphes might be prevented with big data.
    33. Accrding t the text, survey data .
is a main frm f multiple data streams
is an effective way t cllect infrmatin
    is smetimes unreliable and unavailable
is a timely alternative t multiple data streams
    34. What des the underlined part “this gap” in paragraph 5 refer t?
    A.The lack f big data n msquites.
    B. The lack f different data streams.
    C. The risk f an utbreak f a disease.
    D. The ignrance f hw a disease spreads.
    35. What’s the best title f the text?
    A. Hw d we cllect and use data?
    B. What are the challenges facing us nw?
    C. Hw can big data help save the wrld?
    D. What is the answer t preventing catastrphes?

    Endangered species
An endangered species is a grup f animals that culd sn becme extinct. 36 Many species are nearly extinct and culd disappear ff the face f the earth very sn if we dn’t d anything t save them. There are many reasns why species becme endangered.
Habitat destructin is the main reasn why animals becme endangered and this happens in tw ways. When humans mve int a new area, the animals’ habitat is destryed and there is nwhere fr them t live and nthing t eat because humans chp dwn trees and build huses and farms. 37 Chemicals in rivers and pisns n farms cause the destructin f animals’ hmes and fd supplies.
38 Animals have been brught t the edge f extinctin because they are killed fr their highly-valued meat, fur, bnes r skin, r just fr sprt. Overfishing has resulted in many large sea creatures like whales and sharks becming endangered species.
39 We shuld take care nt t pllute natural areas, and farmers r cmpanies wh destry animal habitats shuld face severe financial penalties. The public can help ut by refusing t buy any prducts made frm these animals’ bdy parts. Gvernments can help, t, by making it against the law t hunt, fish r trade in endangered species. They can als prvide funding fr animal sanctuaries, t prtect animals frm extinctin by breeding mre endangered animals, which they later release int the wild. 40
Animal habitats are als destryed because f pllutin.
Endangered species are als the result f hunting and fishing.
Eventually, all the creatures n Earth will enjy being tgether.
Recent changes, hwever, have helped t imprve the situatin.
S what can individuals and gvernments d t prtect endangered species?
Extinctin happens when the last f the species has died ut and there will be n mre.
If we all cperate and take these steps, we will prtect these animals fr future generatins.
