Fast forward year. The pre-wedding activities were fun, and the wedding and reception were beautiful. But our adventure had only just begun!
The morning after the wedding, my husband and I took off for the northeast coast of Borneo. We flew to the town of Sandakan, a gateway to wildlife adventures.
Our destination was the Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort on the Kinabatangan River. This area is one of Malaysia’s most important wildlife habitats. As we travelled along the riverbank on our first afternoon, we observed an orangutan(猩猩) building a treetop nest. Next, we caught sight of monkeys swinging from trees. We also spotted red birds and watched kingfishers dive for fish.
After dinner, eight guests, plus our guide and boatman, boarded the boat again—the night was absolutely dark. We started down to the river. Suddenly, a snake dropped into the water from overhanging branches and then jumped into our boat! It quickly jumped out again to our great relief! When we reached the mouth of the river, the red eyes of crocodiles(鳄鱼) greeted us. That frightening sight shook everyone up! But when we rounded a bend in the river, we saw mango trees lit up like Christmas trees from fireflies. A glorious scene!
The next morning found us once again in a boat. To our delight, approximately 40 elephants paraded by. We couldn’t believe our luck as the elephants only frequent that area once a year.
Upon our return to Sandakan, we learned that everything in Malaysia was shutting down and numerous flights were being cancelled due to COVID-19. However, we made it home. It was an adventure for the ages!

Most people don't think too much about chemicals, but actually they are all around us. Many substances consist of chemicals, including the air that we breathe and the water that we drink. Some chemicals are natural, but most of them are artificial and may be harmful to the human body.
In 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck the United States, so displaced people had to move into temporary housing. Later, some of them began experiencing headaches and nosebleeds due to Formaldehyde exposure. This chemical is commonly found in the glue that holds many household products. It was proved to cause cancer in 2011 and has been linked to an increase in allergies in children.
However, there is another choice: natural adhesives(黏合剂). In particular, ones made from plants such as soy(豆类) proteins that have been changed to resemble the protein some shellfish use to stick to rocks. A natural adhesive is now widely used in wood products in the U.S. Other companies are also developing more natural alternatives to replace industrial chemicals. This is a part of the Green Chemistry philosophy.
Green Chemistry is a way of rethinking how to develop products and processes that are more environmentally-friendly and better for people's health. That includes reducing processing waste, using renewable materials. The 12 Principles of Green Chemistry lay out the goals of this approach. The first is prevention. It is better to prevent waste than to treat it or clean it up. Another principle encourages less dangerous chemical synthesis(化合). Chemical reactions should be designed to be as safe as possible. Energy efficiency is encouraged as well as using chemicals made from renewable plant-based sources.
There are challenges in meeting and holding to the principles of Green Chemistry, but this will encourage new research and lead to the discovery of new chemistry.

Part of the importance of the practice of capacity building is that too many of us think our intellectual capabilities and focus are fixed. However, Benjamin Hardy, a psychologist and author, recently presented groundbreaking research that suggests that we can often change by changing our environment.
"Because people's lives become routine, you begin to see very predictable behaviors and attitudes," Hardy says. This is why personality is viewed as stable and predictable over time. Hardy's book, Personality Isn't Permanent, digs into this concept.
We regard our childhood, teenage years and 20s as our foundational learning periods. It can be common to think we can't learn as effectively as we grow older. But Hardy argues that we really stop learning because we stop trying new things.
In our young lives, we experience a number of “firsts”, ranging from social experiences to learning opportunities. Absorbing new experiences is crucial to ensuring we keep expanding our minds and changing our personalities.
Learning new things is a great starting point to changing your personality for the better. Also consider making substantial changes to your professional environment. This can manifest in several ways. If you're a successful leader, maybe you'd like to share your knowledge with others by coaching, writing or speaking. Anything that pushes you outside the limits of your normal work life can ensure you keep growing and changing.
In Personality Isn't Permanent, Hardy discusses a study from Harvard psychologist Dr. Ellen Langer. In 1981, Langer and her graduate students selected a group of men in their 70s and placed them in an environment modeled to look like the 1950s. It featured a black-and-white television, mid-century furniture and magazines from the era. As Hardy explains, “The goal was to trigger(引起) their minds and bodies to exhibit the energy and biological responses of a much younger person.” It actually worked.
    32. Why do people think personality is fixed?
    A. Because life becomes regular and foreseeable.
    B. Because people refuse to read new books.
    C. Because the brain becomes less effective.
    D. Because people’s intelligence turns stable.
    33. What can we do to enrich our mind?
    A. Reread a fantastic book.
    B. Devote fully to daily work.
    C. Learn a new kind of sport.
    D. Talk with an old friend.
    34. What does the underlined word “manifest” in Paragraph 5 mean?
    A. Construct.
    B. Distinguish.
    C. Predict.
    D. Appear.
    35. What does the last paragraph imply?
    A. The facilities in Harvard need improving.
    B. Younger persons accept new things better.
    C. Langer’s study consumed a lot of energy.
    D. The participants’ performance improved.

    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
There has been a remarkable rise in the popularity of house plants over the past few years, with trendy new shops popping up all over the country selling every kind of plant you can imagine. 36 But follow a few basic tips and you’ll soon get the hang of it.
Choosing your plant doesn’t seem that simple. It’s a common mistake to wander into a shop and grab the plant that you first fall for, but it’s important to understand what type of environment you’re introducing it to before picking one out. 37 For example, some plants are better suited to maximum light and heat, while others prefer cooler spots.
38 One of the most common reasons for houseplant killing is overwatering. You might think it has a constant thirst but chances are it won't take to spending extended periods sitting in wet soil. Every plant is different, so research is once more key, but generally home-dwellers like watering most when they’re growing rapidly (spring and summer) and prefer an occasional water when the soil is dry, rather than as a daily routine. 39
Your plants may actually need feeding. While some house plants don’t need many nutrients to grow, others are greedy for extra nutritional goodness (especially those that display flowers and fruits). 40 And you’ll also need to check what type of fertilizer each variety requires and how much to use each time.
    A. Using good soil for your plant is vital.
    B. Different plants require different amounts of water.
    C. Taking care of plants is much easier than raising other creatures.
    D. And always use water that has been brought up to room temperature.
    E. Looking after house plants isn’t always as straightforward as some think.
    F. As with watering, they’ll need more food during their growing season than during winter.
    G. A little research before buying will save you lots of stress when you get your plants home.

    A Wonderful Golden Autumn Concert
The golden autumn concert that we had been looking forward to was held in our school stadium on Saturday morning, October16th. It started at 8:30, lasting about three hours.
At first, our headmaster gave the opening speech and then the hosts announced the performances began. All performances were given by our school students and teachers. There were Chinese classical music, western music, modern dance, popular songs and so on. Our monitor played a piece of classical Chinese music with the Guzheng, which won loud applause. The modern dance performed by the young teachers pushed the concert to the climax and the concert ended with applause and cheers.
After the concert, we felt excited. Not only did it offer us relief from study pressure but also lifted our spirits.

    听力原文
    Text 1
M: What a terrible day! I made a lot of typing mistakes, and my boss got very angry with me.
W: Well, everything is going to be all right.
    Text 2
W: Do you go to school on foot every day?
M: Well, it's too far to walk. But when the bus is crowded, I wish I could take a taxi.
    Text 3
W: Mr. Peter, can I take a few days off?
M: As long as you have finished the work I gave you last week.
    Text 4
M: May I make an appointment with Mr. Brown at nine tomorrow morning?
W: Let me see. He will be having a meeting then and it will last one hour and a half.
    Text 5
M: Have you made an appointment with Dr. Peterson's T. A.yet?
W: No. And I really can't put it off anymore.
    Text 6
W: Guess what, Dad. I got my driving license.
M: Congratulations. But I've prepared a few rules.
    W: Like what?
M: Rule number one : No driving with friends for the first six months.
    W: What?
M: Yeah. Rule number two: You always must wear your seat belt and obey the rules of the road.
    W: Huh. I wasn't born yesterday.
M: Okay, rule number three : Remember that I love you, and I'm just a protective father who wants his daughter to always be safe.
    W: Yeah, yeah. I know.
    Text 7
W: Good morning, Alex. Nice to meet you. I have to say that it is my first time to interview a man for this job.
    M: I know it is. It's unusual.
W: Tell me, have you always been a nanny?
M: No, not at all. I was studying engineering in New Zealand, and I knew I could earn a lot of money as an engineer, but it was boring.
W: OK, I understand that. But why did you choose a career in childcare?
M: Well, obviously it's because I love children, but it was much more than that. You see my mother died when I was 12 years old and I had to help my father take care of my younger brother and sister.
W: Ah, I see. So you didn’t have to have a lot of training to be a nanny?
M: Oh yes, I did. I had to study for a year. I had to learn how to take care of children correctly.
    W: Well, I see.
    Text 8
W: Good morning. This is TGC!
M: Good morning. Walter Barry here, calling from London. Could I speak to Mr. Grand, please?
W: What is it about, please?
M: Well, I understand that your company has a chemical processing plant. My own company LCP, Liquid Control Products, is a leader in safety from leaks in the field of chemical processing. I'd like to speak to Mr. Grand to discuss ways in which we could help TGC to protect itself from such problems and save money at the same time.
W: Yes, I see. Well, Mr. Grand is not available just now.
M: Well, could I ring him tomorrow?
W: No. I'm sorry. He won't be free tomorrow. Listen, let me suggest something. You send us details of your products and services. And then we will contact you.
M: Yes, that's very kind of you. I have your address.
W: Very good, Mr. Bary. We look forward 1o hearing from you.
    M: Thank you, goodbye.
    Text 9
    W: Can I help you?
M: Well, you see, actually, rm getting married soon. And my friends want to buy me presents and things.
W: And you would like some things for the kitchen?
    M: Yes, that's right.
W: Well, I suppose the first thing you need is a cooker. Do you want an electric one or a gas one?
M: Em... I think I'd probably prefer a gas one. How much is this one?
W: It’s one hundred and seventy-five pounds, including tax and delivery. It's a very good one, though.
M: But it's a lot of money, isn't it? What sorts of things could I ask people to buy, you know, cheaper?
W: Well, you need some pans, won't you? A set of saucepans, I suppose, and frying pans.
    M: Er.. . That's a thought.
W: Something else you might use is a set of these knives, you know, carving knives; bread knives, steak knives, fruit knives, potato peeling knives.
M: Heavens! I never knew there were so many sorts.
W: Oh, yes. Come over here and I'll show you some more.
    Text 10
Recently the first elephant hospital in India has opened for business. It is the product of a non-profit organization Wildlife SOS, which also runs a nearby conservation and care center.
The Wildlife SOS Elephant Hospital is specially designed to provide care for injured and sick patients, which are expected to include elephants held in tourist attractions as well as victims of highway accidents.
Elephants needn't even be brought to the hospital to receive medical treatment. The hospital has a center with portable medical equipment. So if an elephant is hit and runs very far away anywhere in North India, it can be taken care of on the spot.
While elephants are highly respected in India, many often fall victim to the cruel wildlife trade or are badly treated by elephant caretakers. The hospital is something really special because for centuries India has used its elephants and abused them. Today, for the first time, they are offered a place where people can cure them and take good care of them.
