Lewis Carroll was the pen-name o£ Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English writer and author of two of the best loved children's books in English literature——Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. The characters and phrases from these books have entered and become part of the English lexicon(词典) in a way that was comparable to those from Shakespeare's works.

Charles Dodgson was born on January 27,1832 and spent the first eleven years of his life at Warrington. Dodgson was educated first by homeschooling, then at boarding schools in Richmond and at Rugby, and finally at Charist Church College, Oxford. In later life, he remembered his boarding school experience with no fondness. Still, he was an excellent student and did very well academically throughout. For all his brilliance or perhaps because of it, he couldn't be bothered to spend long hours studying and so he didn't. If things came easily, that was fine; if they didn't, well, that doesn't seem to have bothered him overmuch.

His book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland first came into being in 1862 as a story he made up for Alice Liddell, the ten-year-old daughter of his friend Dean Henry Liddell. Later he wrote it down and showed the book, illustrated with his own drawings, to another friend, the fairy tale writer George Macdonald and his children. They loved it and enthusiastically urged him to get it published. Accordingly, Dodgson revised it for publication. And in 1865, with illustrations more professionally done by Sir John Tenniel, it became an immediate bestseller. Its sequel(续集) Through the Looking-Glass proved equally popular.

Healthcare staff and bank clerks have been on the front line of the health and economic crises striking the UK, but behind the scenes, another group of workers robots have been toiling away and overcoming both emergencies with no fear of COVID-19. But will COVID-19 speed up the rise of robots?

Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is software that robotizes repetitive back-office tasks. The National Health Service (NHS) has used it during the widespread disease to con-trol demand and capacity planning in caring for all levels of patients day and night. Jason Kingdon, Blue Prism's new chief executive who is recovering from CO VID-19, says, “Before RPA, these were manual processes. You had to train a number of staff to put them in place. Now, you only need to train a single robot to manage the administration.” More than two fifths of bosses across 45 countries that responded to a survey by EY (Ernst & Young) said they were planning on accelerating spending on automation technology to prepare for a post-Covid world.

COVID-19 has already left tens of millions unemployed, so firms won't be short of cheap labour on the other side of the crisis. But experts still think Al will be the more cautious choice for companies. One of them said, “It's important to remember that even in China, which has much lower wages, 12.5 million manufacturing jobs have been cut over the past four years as more robots have been adopted.”

However, Al is overhyped (过分提倡)in many ways and poor application could lead to a rise in anxiety towards automation. Again, we should think of history as a guide. A lot of, workers riots(暴动) in the early 19th century happened during the continental blockade of the Napoleonic Wars when there was significant mess to trade in Britain. These things are not unrelated.

    28. What does the underlined phrase “toiling away” in paragraph 1 mean?

    A. Walking slowly.    B. Working lazily.

    C. Working hard.      D. Walking toughly.

    29. What do Jason Kingdon's words in paragraph 2 mean?

    A. He prefers to use robot workers.

    B. He has refused to accept robots' service.

    C. He wishes to employ more human staff.

    D. He dislikes the survey by EY.

    30. What's the author's attitude to robots?

    A Supportive.          B. Worried.          C. Indifferent.          D. Opposed.

    31. Which is the best title for the text?

    A. Robots Have Taken the Place of Humans

    B. COVID-19 Has Terrible Effects on Our Life

    C. It’s Time to Stop Robots from Taking the Place of Humans

    D. COVID-19 Speeds up the Trend of Robots Replacing Humans

On a windy day in December of 2016, a video online showed a girl was sitting on the sidewalk with a sign reading “Homeless and Hungry, Please Help!” The girl looked to be about 10 or 11 years old. Many people simply walked past the girl without even taking a look at her.

The girl remained sitting there with a plastic cup between her two feet. Occasionally, a person stopped to drop some small change into er cup. An old man slowly walked up to the girl and softly bent down next to her. He asked if she was homeless. The little girl could only respond by simply shrugging her shoulders(耸肩).

The old man was very confused and tried to ask the girl more questions. Again, the little girl could only respond in the same way. The old man eventually gave up and dropped some coins into her cup. The girl was alone again and was looking hopefully down the street to see if anyone was coming her way. More people passed her without giving any notice to her. She was unsure of what was about to happen.

Then a woman approached the girl. After reading the little girl's sign, she decided to talk to the girl. However, the woman changed her mind suddenly. Hope quickly left the girl's face as the woman walked away.

The video showed a few minutes later, the same woman was moving towards the girl. She was seen to be carrying two packages of food. She then lowered herself next to the girl and asked her something. She then put the two packages down and dropped a $20 bill into her cup. The woman went on to explain that she didn't have much more to offer because she was homeless as well. The girl remained silent as a young man began approaching the pair. M: What can I do for you?

W: Weve received your application to enter our school, but I’m afraid that you didn't fill it all out. In the place where we request family information, you wrote that you have a mother and a younger sister.

    M: Uh-huh.

W: Well, you didn't mention anything about your father.

    M: Is it necessary?

W: Yes, I'm afraid so. We like to keep complete records.

M: OK. The truth is that my father wasn't around me to help me in my growing up.

    W: I'm sorry.

M: It's fine. My mother taught me the value of being honest, working hard, and being kind. She did this while working two jobs.

    W. She sounds great.

M: She is. And she's the only real parent I have.

    (Text 9)

W: What's keeping you from joining the environmental movement?

M: You're going to start bothering me about that again? Didn't Mum and Dad tell you to leave me alone about

    this talk?

W: We're grown people. Mum and Dad can't order me to do anything I don't want to da

M: Or stop doing something, either, right? But really, I don't want to be bothered with environmental movements.

    W: Why not?

    M: I don't have time.

W: You're kidding, right? You played computer games all day yesterday. You have time.

    M: Well, I don't think it's important.

W: What? Rising pollution, growing deserts, warming temperatures. they aren't important? Now, all of these problems are going to lead to the end of human beings on this planet. Not just trouble, but end.

M: If the world is going to end for people, time is even more precious, right?

    W: Yeah...

M: So I don’t want to waste my time by joining an environmental movement or by talking about boring things with you.

W: I'm going to tell Mum you said that.

M: Mum isn't the boss of me.

    (Text 10)

W: Students at Kramer High School have, among others, the following activities you can participate in, if you wish. The school newspaper is published twice a month. In certain cases, the English department will give extra credits for material that is published. But Tm afraid you're not paid for the material.

Volunteers to help the local children's hospitals can see Mr Sparks. He needs people who can read stories, play games and help young people with school work. If you have ever thought of being a teacher. here is the chance to try your skills.

Another community service opportunity is to help deliver meals to our senior citizens who cannot leave their homes. Sometimes they need help in writing letters and just having someone to talk to. Some of them have very interesting stories to tell and you just might get material for your essays or that article for the school newspaper.

The Green Club, under the direction of Bob Hill, will grow plants around the new library building Anyone interested can sign the paper on the board just inside the main entrance to the library. Mr Hill will contact you so please leave a telephone number where you can be reached.

These are just a few of the opportunities open to you here at Kramer High School. If you want to discuss one of these choices, or have something else you would like to do, please come to see me at any time.

    第一节:

    One possible version:

    A Patriotic Song Contest

With the purpose of enriching our spare life and inspiring our love for motherland, a patriotic song contest was held in our school last Friday.

Every class performed two songs. The first song offered by our school was a must The other song was chosen freely to perform, which increased the fun of the contest. After fierce competition, three top classes were awarded prizes, among which the class wearing army uniform left the deepest impression on me.

The activity not only made me relaxed but also motivated me to study harder to contribute to our mother-land.

    第二节:

    One possible version:

Robby stepped towards the little girl and the kind woman. He shook the woman's hand and explained what was going on. He showed her where the cameras were. Robby handed her the prize for her kindness. The woman was clearly shocked at what had just happened. Because she refused to take back the food and the money, the child actress donated them to another homeless person. The kind woman was very grateful for what she had just received. The actress gave the homeless woman a warm hug.

Those who watched the video were shocked at the lack of sympathy and the help that was offered to the little girl. They were surprised that the person who did help the little girl was homeless herself and gave all that she had to the little girl. The viewers took to the video's comment section to share their feelings. One person wrote that they hoped the homeless lady would get some help as well. The goal of this video was to show the lack of sympathy towards those who are homeless. The video was used as a way to lead to some changes.
