As a high-ranking male f the chimpanzee cmmunity, his acceptance meant ther grup members als allwed Jane t bserve. It was the first time that Jane had witnessed David Greybeard using tls. Excited, she telegraphed Dr. Leakey abut her bservatin. He wrte back, "Nw we must redefine 'tl' and 'man' r accept chimpanzees as humans."
Jane cntinued t wrk in the field and, with Leakey's help, began her dctral prgram withut an undergraduate degree in 1962. At the University f Cambridge, she fund herself at dds with senir scientists ver the methds she used—hw she had named the chimpanzees rather than using the mre cmmn numbering system, and fr suggesting that the chimps have emtins and persnalities. Stress raises levels f crtisl, which plays a rle in high bld pressure, heart disease and headaches. In test subjects, levels f crtisl decreased after a walk in the frest. Trees give ff ils called phytncides that have special prperties and may influence immunity(免疫力). Expsure t natural tree ils helps lift depressin, lwer bld pressure. One study shwed a rise in the number and activity f immune cells, which fight viruses and cancer, amng peple wh spent three days and tw nights in a frest cmpared with peple taking an urban trip. Althugh we're surrunded by millins f bricks every day, mst f us dn't think abut them t ften. Fr thusands f years, the humble clay-fired bricks haven't changed.
They're made frm natural materials, but there are prblems with bricks at every step f their prductin. Bricks are made frm clay—a type f sil fund all ver the wrld. Clay mining is harmful t plant grwth. In cnventinal brick prductin, the clay is shaped and baked in kilns(窑) mstly heated by fssil fuels, which cntributes t climate change. Once made, bricks must be transprted t cnstructin sites, generating mre carbn emissins. With s many bricks prduced glbally, their impact adds up.
Gabriela Meder, a prfessr at Sctland's Herit-Watt University, decided t find slutins t that. With her university's supprt, Meder set up Kenteq in 2009. The cmpany's signature prduct is the K-Briq. Made frm mre than 90% cnstructin waste, Meder says the K-Briq—which des nt need t be fired in a kiln—prduces less than a tenth f the carbn emissins f cnventinal bricks. With the cmpany testing new machinery t start scaling up prductin, Meder hpes her bricks will help t build a mre sustainable wrld.
The K-Briq will be cmparably priced t cnventinal bricks. Additinally, as a new prduct, the K-Briq has been subjected t strict assessment and authritative certificatin. Reusing ld bricks is an expensive prcess and there is n standardized way t check the strength, safety r durability (耐久性) f recycled bricks. Meder says that K-Briq culd slve bth these prblems. She claims that K-Briq is strnger and mre durable than fired clay bricks.
Over the next 18 mnths, Meder plans t get K-Briq machines n-site at recycling plants. "This will reduce transprt-related emissins because trucks can cllect K-Briq when they drp ff cnstructin waste," says Meder.
32. What inspired Meder t invent the K-Briq?
A. The prblems with the cnventinal brick prductin.
B. The utdated style f the cnventinal bricks.
C. The high cst f manufacturing cnventinal bricks.
D. The pr quality f the cnventinal bricks.
33.Why is the K-Briq prductin sustainable?
A. It wn't prduce waste.
B. It brings n pllutin t the air.
C. The plants ccupy much less land than befre.
D. The K-Briq is mainly made frm cnstructin waste.
34.What is the furth paragraph mainly abut?
A. The ppularity f the K-Briq. B.The advantages f K-Briq ver traditinal bricks.
C. The special materials used in K-Briq.D. The advanced technlgy used fr K-Briq.
35.Why des Meder decide t put K-Briq machines at recycling factries?
A. T ensure fewer emissins.B. T speed up the prductin.
C. T lwer the prductin cst.D. T cllect mre cnstructin waste.
