Teenager Jamal Hinton got a text. It was an invitation to Thanksgiving from someone who said she was his grandma. He’d never seen the number before and responded “Grandma? Can I have a picture?”
When a picture of Wanda Dench, now 60, popped up, he wrote back “You not my grandma” with a laughing emoji. Hinton, then a high school senior, texted back a picture of himself.
“Can I still get a plate?” he went on to ask, not expecting a response. She shot back, “Of course you can. That’s what grandma’s do…Feed everyone.”
The two talked a few times and Hinton realized Dench was serious about the invitation. She lived in Mesa, Ariz., about a 25-minute drive from his house south of Phoenix. So instead of going to his own grandmother’s house, he showed up at Dench’s.
He was welcomed as family by her, her husband and other Dench relatives, including her actual grandson. What started with a handshake ended with a hug. Their story has since been shared thousands of times on the Internet.
That was last year. The two developed a good friendship, talking regularly as she gave him advice about his life and career. He got another invitation for this year, but this time it was intended and very genuine.
He showed up with his girlfriend and a pumpkin pie.
“She’s like a grandma to me; she gives me advice on keeping my head up in school,” Hinton said. “She asks me about my dreams.”
Dench said that last year when she first realized she had texted a stranger she was embarrassed, but also thought it was amusing. The number previously belonged to her grandson.
“My grandkids thought it was a hoot,” she said. “They tease me to this day about texting a stranger.”
She was really pleasantly surprised that Hinton continued with the relationship and they were more of extended family and, best of all, friends.

A warm drink of milk before bed has long been the best choice for those wanting a good night’s sleep. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.
Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety.
The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed with dried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night.
Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food.
Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer.
While the effect of cows milk harvested at different time has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.
Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.
Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists recommending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. The more fat you take in before bedtime, the greater burden you will put on your body at night.

C. An Experiment on Mice D. Milk Drinking and Health
11.How does the author support the theme of the text?
A. By giving examples. B. By stating arguments.
C. By explaining statistical data. D. By providing research results.

During my elementary school years, I used to compare my mom with my best friend Tom’s mom.
Tom’s mom always gave her lots of money to buy the most fashionable clothes and favorite food. His mom allowed him to do anything he liked. I really admired Tom. My mom didn’t give me much pocket money and she always told me that I should behave myself. I was annoyed with her.
Whenever I didn’t get what I wanted, I would complain to my mom, Tom’s mom would give him that! I wish she were my mom. Every time, my mom would calmly say “Poor Tom”. I couldn’t understand her. “She shouldn’t be feeling sorry for Tom!” I thought. “She should be feeling sorry for me.”
One day, I couldn’t help saying to Mom, “Poor Tom? Lucky Tom! he gets everything he wants! Why do you feel sorry for him?” I burst into tears.
My mom sat down next to me and said softly. “Yes, I do feel sorry for him. I have been teaching you a lesson that he will never be taught.”
I looked up at her. “What are you talking about?”
Mom said with care, “One day he will really want something. Maybe he’ll find out that he can’t have it. His mother won’t always be around to give him money, and what’s more, money can’t buy everything.”
She continued, “I have taught you valuable lessons by not giving you everything you want. You’ll know how to look for bargains and save money, but he won’t. You’ll understand that you need to work hard to get the things that you want but he won’t. When Tom is a grown man, he’ll wake up one day and he will be wishing that he had a mom like the one you’ve got. Life lessons are more important than modern clothes and delicious food.”
It took some time, but I eventually understood my mom’s words. Now I am a happy and successful man.
12. During the author’s elementary school years, he __________.
A. wished that his mom were as good as Tom’s
B. went to school with Tom every day

A. She felt sorry for Tom because Tom was poor.
B. She wanted to tell a lie to comfort the author.
C. She thought that Tom was spoiled by his mother.
D. She told the author this and wanted him to help Tom.
14. What do we learn about the author’s mother?
A. She was strict and taught the author to be independent.
B. She cared for other people’s children more than her own.
C. She thought that life lessons were as important as money.
D. She was so poor that she couldn’t give the author much money.
