Each morning, opening the door to the factory, I was struck by the strong smell of oil and the noises of machines. My college internship(实习期)at this large plant involved walking through the factory to get to the engineering offices. I tried to get to my office without slipping or getting my high heels stuck in the old wood flooring.
The head of this crowd would shout and blow the whistle so loudly that everyone would hear and laugh. When this type of thing happened, it was just considered u boys will be boys” , so managers did nothing though they were aware of all this. This whole situation was humiliating, and I began to hate going to the offices.
After a while, I realized that the man with the whistle delighted in embarrassing the ladies. Out of necessity, my idea was born. One morning, as I walked through the factory door and made my way around the machines, he began to blow his whistle. I stopped and turned to face him, looking him directly in the eyes. Surprised, he stopped the whistle.
Breathing deeply, I said aloud, "I just wanted to tell you that I wish you wouldn't do that. It's very embarrassing. How would you like it if someone did that to you or one of your family members?"
I think I shocked him, and he looked down. " I'm sorry. I won't do it again. We were just having fun. My name is Tom," he said.
I met his gaze but smiled this time. "Let's be friends from now on.
Sure enough, the next morning, Tom smiled and waved. I smiled and waved back. We continued to have this happy exchange for the rest of my internship.

Researchers are worried about the fishing equipment floating around the Pacific Ocean. These ghost nets threaten sea animals and pollute coastal areas.
A ghost net study led by biologist Jennifer Lynch found it difficult in many cases to identify the source of the ghost equipment. Lynch said she is not interested in blaming anyone. Instead, she hopes the study will find new ways to prevent damage to the environment.
Drew, a graduate student and one of the study's lead researchers, said his biggest concern is that the equipment keeps killing fish and other wildlife long after it's lost, leaving a path of ecological damage.
The ghost nets pollute oceans around the world, but the Hawaiian Islands are in the middle of two large areas of ocean pollution. It's difficult to know where they came from. Experts believe many nets are lost accidentally. But some illegal fishing boats leave nets in the water to avoid being caught. Other fishermen cut away pieces of damaged nets instead of recovering them.
The research team gets some ghost nets from the Papahanaumokuakea National Marine Monument, the largest protected environment in the United States, also recognized as a United Nations World Heritage Site. Researchers look at about 70 different features of each piece of net, including the kinds of material used, and find nets from all parts of the Pacific.
Brian, a fisherman now working for a net manufacturer in Washington, said nets from poor countries are usually weaker.
Jonathan Moore, one of the researchers, said illegal and unreported fishing is sometimes associated with ghost nets and is among the greatest threats to oceans. Fishing net markings and rules, he added, should be "a central part of responsible fishing management operations".
28. What is difficult for researchers in many cases of ghost nets?
A. Finding out the source of the nets. B. Checking the harm done by the nets.
C. What fish and other wildlife are killed. D. The length of the ecological damage.
29. What does the underlined word "they" in Para. 4 refer to?
A. The research experts. The ghost nets.
C. The areas of pollution. D・ The Hawaiian Islands.
30. What does Jonathan suggest about fishing management?
A. Helping poor countries make strong nets. B. Trying different materials for fishing nets.
C. Making rules about marking fishing nets. D. Recovering the ghost nets after they’re lost.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. Strict Ocean Fishing Management Is Needed B. Ghost Nets Should Be Recovered from the Sea
C. A UN World Heritage Site in the US Is inDanger D. Lost Fishing Equipment Threatens Ocean Life

Middle-school aged children who use the Internet, social media or video games for more than an hour each day during the school week have significantly lower grades and test scores, according to a study at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.
Researchers say the findings give parents and children a threshold for using entertainment-related technology-no more than one hour daily on school days and four hours a day on weekends.
"Interactive technology is widely used to improve children's educational access and achievement, said lead author Vivien. " During the COVID-19 pandemic, technology is important for remote learning. But there's a growing concern that too much technology use, particularly for entertainment, may affect children's educational development by holding them back from learning activities."
In the research, about 10 ,000 first-year middle school students were surveyed and followed. Their average age was 13. 5 years. The results showed that children who used the Internet for entertainment four or more hours daily were four times more likely to skip school than those who didn't. Boys used interactive technology for entertainment more than girls. Boys also performed worse and showed lower school engagement levels than girls.
“Such findings are important, particularly in the recent online learning in countries throughout the world," said Vivien. "In a learning environment mixed with the Internet, it is easy for children to move across educational and entertainment platforms during learning to other activities. "
Vivien said children in study who used a bit of technology experienced less boredom at school, potentially due to the positive effects of participation in social media for students' relationship building and advancing children's cognitive( 认知的) development.
The findings suggest that parents place time limits on their children's interactive technology use, and that parents and teachers should help children to develop effective time management and self-regulation skills to reduce their dependence on technology.
32. What's the finding of the study?
A. The Internet is important for children's learning.
B. More than an hour online a day hurts the learning.
C. School kids should keep away from the Internet.
D. Staying online does more harm to boys than girls.
33. What does the underlined word threshold" in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Punishment. B. Reward. C. Guideline. D. Target.
34. What conclusion did Vivien draw from the study?
A. Children under 13 should be kept from online. B. Schools have the duty to limit online lessons.
C. Online learning helps children manage time. D・ A bit use of technology is helpful to children.
35. Where is this text most likely from?
A. An educational journal. B. An entertainment magazine.
C. A technology report. D. A tour guidebook.

第二节(满分25分)

Last August, my husband, our two kids and 1 were on vacation for a nice week away. We had hiked about half a mile to a popular spot called Diana's Baths, where the water falls off a series of flat rocks. The baths were full of families , so we made our way to one of the upper levels of rock to keep our distance.
Both where we sat and down below, the water fell into small pools, where kids in swimsuits were playing around. I watched as some younger parents nervously took their children away from the rocks' edges, feeling grateful that our kids, at six and eight, could keep their physical space with more confidence. I was still terrified as I saw my two boys jump between the slippery rocks. At the top of my voice, I warned them not to run and to stay away from the edges.
Then, seconds later, I turned and saw my son Wyatt sitting down between two rocks in a fast-moving stream. I yelled at him to get out. He yelled back something that I couldn't hear, and then he disappeared over the edge. I screamed, over and over, "Somebody help my son!” I didn't even know what help he needed. My husband was rushing down the rocks. Wyatt was sitting up-he was alive. My biggest fear was erased.
It was about 12 feet from the top of the waterfall to the pool below, and Wyatt had fallen on his back, straight onto the rocks. While everyone else looked on from a distance, too afraid or unbothered to help, one of the visitors, Lisa, didn't hesitate. By the time I had climbed down the rocks and my husband had pulled Wyatt out of the water, she had already called 911 for an ambulance. She told me that she was a nurse. She put a towel under Wyatt's head and asked us to keep him still and on his back, "I'm not leaving you. ”
