When asked to point out one or two things that are most important to themselves, many put friends ahead of homes, jobs, clothes and cars.
A true friendship carries a long history of experience that determines who we are and keeps us connected. It is a treasure we should protect. Unfortunately, the better friends you are, the more probably you'll have disagreements. And the result can be what you don't want-an end to the relationship.
The good news is that most troubled friendships can be mended. First, don't let your pride get in your way. Most of us can forgive each other when differences are brought out in the open. Second, apologize(道歉)when you're wrong-even if you've been wronged. Over the course of a friendship, even the best people make mistakes. Sometimes, it may be best if the wronged person takes the lead and apologizes. When you apologize, give your friend a chance to admit(承认)that he has been wrong. Third, see things from your friend's point of view. And finally, accept that friendships change as our needs and lifestyle change. Making friends can sometimes seem easy. The hard part is keeping the connections strong during the natural ups and downs that have an effect on all relationships. My suggestion: consider friendship as an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure and nurture(培养).
24. For many people, which are the most important according to the passage?
A. Jobs. B. Clothes and cars. C. Homes. D. Friends.

A. who has been mistaken for another B. who has been treated in an unfair way
C. who has treated friends badly D. who has admitted his mistakes

A. How to Make Friends Easily B. How to Make More Friends
C. How to Mend a Troubled Friendship D. How to Take the Lead in Making Friends

Wildfires burn across the western United States and they will continue letting out smelly, harmful air until later in the week or after that, scientists say. They add that the smoky, cloud-covered skies might last even longer.
People in Oregon, Washington and parts of California were struggling with yellowish-green smog caused by the fires. The air is the worst, most unhealthy air on the planet. The bad air is everywhere. It has entered homes and businesses. It caused the Oregon Zoo in Portland to close. On Monday, Alaska Airlines announced it was delaying flights to Portland and Spokane, Washington, until late Tuesday. The company said the air was too thick.
Some areas of central California covered with smoke are not likely to see conditions improve until October, said meteorologist Dan Borsum. He is studying weather conditions and sharing his information with firefighters in Northern California. Borsum said that smoke from over 20 wildfires in the West and throughout California was gathering in the Central valley. The area already had some of California's worst air quality.
Tyler Kranz is a meteorologist at the U.S. National Weather Service office in Portland. He said Oregon will need strong winds blowing from the ocean towards land to clear the air. But he said there needs to be a "perfect balance" of wind so that it blows away the smoke but does not start more fires.
"We need the winds to get the smoke out of here," Kranz said. "We just don't want them to be too strong, because then they could fan those flames and all of a sudden those fires are spreading again."
28. All of the following happened in the western United States Except?
A. People in some cities suffered bad air.
B. Oregon Zoo in Portland was closed.
C. Smoke gathered in the Central valley.
D. Flights to Portland was delayed until earlier Tuesday.
29. Which one may Tyler Kranz agree?
A. Oregon will need winds blowing from land to clear the air.
B. The stronger the wind is, the better the result is.
C. Proper wind will be needed in order not to catch fire again in Oregon.
D. We need fan to blow the smoke away.
30. What might Dan Borsum be?
A. A resident. B. A weather expert. C. A chief official. D. A senior manager.
31. What would be the best title of the passage?
A. Wildfires burn across the United States B. Bad effect of the air pollution
C. Air from western fires worst on planet D. The dangers of wildfires

Honeybees can't swim, and when their wings are wet, they can't fly, either. But Chris Roh and other researchers at the California Institute of Technology found that when bees drop into bodies of water, they can use their wings to produce little waves and move toward land-like surfers who create and then ride their own waves.
As with many scientific advances-Isaac Newton's apple or Benjamin Franklin's lightning bolt-Dr. Roh's experiment began with a walk. Passing Caltech's Millikan Pond in 2016, he observed a bee on the water's surface producing waves. He wondered how an insect known for flight could push itself through water.
Dr. Roh and his co-worker, Morteza Gharib, used butterfly nets to collect local Pasadena honeybees and observed their surf-like movements. The researchers used a wire to restrict each bee's bodily movement, allowing close examination of their wings. They found that the bee bends its wings at a 30-degree angle, pulling up water and producing a forward force. Bees get trapped on the surface because water is roughly three times heavier than air. But that weight helps to push the bee forward when its wings move quickly up and down. It's a tough exercise for the bees, which the researchers guess could handle about 10 minutes of the activity.
The researchers said the surf-like movement hasn't been documented in other insects and most semiaquatic insects use their legs for propulsion, which is known as water-walking. It may have evolved in bees, they predicted.
Dr. Roh and Dr. Gharib have imagined many practical applications for bees' surfing. One plan is to use their observations to design robots able to travel across sky and sea. "This could be useful for search and rescues, or for getting samples of the surface of the ocean, if you can't send a boat or helicopter," Dr. Gharib said.
32. What does the author intend to show by mentioning Newton and Franklin?
A. Roh's admiration for them. B. Roh's chance discovery about bees.
C. Their outstanding talent for science. D. Their similar achievements in discovery.
33. How did the researchers find the discovery in the passage?
A. By surfing the Internet. B. By checking out the documentary.
C. By doing the experiment. D. By observing the movement.
34. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Designing robots is the first plan to use the discovery.
B. A boat or helicopter can help you get to the surface of the ocean.
C. The discovery of bees' surfing can be used for application.
D. Honeybee can be used for search and rescues.
35. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Honeybees can surf to safety. B. Bees help scientists make inventions.
C. Insects can adapt to the environment. D. Nature is a helpful guide for discovery.

We sometimes get questions like this: "How can I speak English with more confidence?" That is a great question. Lack of confidence can come from having trouble with pronunciation and not having a wide enough vocabulary. If you lack confidence when you speak English, you may do one or more of these things without realizing it: Speak in short phrases, Speak too softly, Speak too fast or unclearly. 36
Use positive self-talk
Believe it or not, the most important person you talk to every day is yourself. 37 So the next time you are using your English, pay attention to what you tell yourself. Be sure to replace unhelpful thoughts or ideas with better ones.
Speak louder, slower
To sound more confident, speak loudly enough that anyone in the same room can easily hear you. 38 Many English learners worry that speaking too slow will make them sound inexperienced. But speaking too fast may cause more mistakes. So avoid worrying that you are speaking too slow for the people around you.
Read out loud
Reading out loud can help build confidence in how your English sounds. So the next time you are reading a website, book or something else that you enjoy, take a few minutes to read the material aloud. 39 The second time, if there is audio, you can listen to the speaker as you read along silently. Then, try to read the story out loud alone. Then, try listening to the speaker and reading out loud at the same time.
40
If your English-speaking skills are at the beginner level and you try to do something too difficult, you may fail. This can harm your confidence. But, if you do something that matches your level, you are more likely to do it well. Make a plan for daily practice and spend at least 30 minutes each day practicing your English.
A. Set realistic goals.
B. In other words: Your thoughts matter.
C. And try to slow down your speech if you speak too fast.
D. List words you want to say.

When I stood there, one thing of childhood thirteen years ago pained my heart.
My mother had been ill for a long time, and I had become so used to her pale face and weak voice. And I was not frightened at them at all, as children usually are. At first, it is true, I often cried violently; but when, day after day, I returned from school, and found her the same, I began to believe she would always wait for me there and be with me together. But others told me she would die.
One day when I had lost my place in the class, I came home discouraged and upset. I went to my mother's room. She said nothing. She was paler than usual, but she met me with the same similar smile that always welcomed my return.
She weakly requested me to go downstairs and bring her a glass of water. I angrily asked her why she did not call a servant to do it. With a look of blame, which I shall never forget if I live to be a hundred years old, she said, "Will not my daughter bring a glass of water for her poor, sick mother?"
I went and brought her the water, but I did not do it kindly.
Instead of smiling, and kissing her as I had been won't to do, I set the glass down very quickly, and left the room. After playing a short time, I went to bed without saying good night to my mother.
