About 50 feet from shore of the Northern California’s Trinidad State Beach, two brothers were fighting for their lives. They had been swept out to sea in a rip current (激流), their mouths barely able to stay above the water. Thick fog made it difficult for beachgoers to see the guys, but the screams were unmistakable. And every second counted. The brothers, aged 15 and 20, were wearing shorts and T-shirts, unsuitable for a November day, let alone the freezing water. Keven Harder, a supervising ranger (巡查员), told the North Coast Journal in nearby Eureka that swimming in such a temperature “takes the fight right out of you.”
Luckily, four surfers in wet suits were nearby. Narayan Weibel, Spenser Stratton, and Adrian York, all 16, along with Taj Ortiz-Beck, 15, were on their surfboards riding up and down the coast on five-foot waves when they heard the cries. They turned and saw two bobbing heads and four struggling arms. “We looked at each other and knew these guys were about to drown,” Weibel told the Washington Post.
Weibel, Stratton, and Ortiz-Beck paddled toward the distressed swimmers while York headed to shore to warn someone to call 911. He then dived back in to help his friends.
As the surfers drew close, the brothers were still fighting hard for their lives. “It was pretty stressful, but there wasn’t any time to think about it, and that helped me keep my cool,” Ortiz-Beck says.
Ortiz-Beck pulled up alongside the younger brother. Grabbing him under his arms, he raised him up onto his board. Stratton and Weibel, meanwhile, hurried to help the older brother. He was large, 250 to 300 pounds, and he was panicked.
“I told them, ‘Calm down—we got you!’” says Weibel. “They thought they were going to die.”
York arrived in time to help get the older brother atop the second board. The surfers then paddled several minutes through choppy water to the medical help waiting onshore. The brothers were scared but fine.
“When we get a call like this one, it’s usually too late by the time we get there,” says Dillon Cleavenger, a first responder. “I can’t say enough about what these boys did. They were willing and prepared to risk their lives.”
    24. What can we know from the first paragraph?
    A. Two brothers were almost drowned in the sea.
    B. Beachgoers happened to meet the two brothers.
    C. The supervising ranger warned them not to swim then.
    D. Surfers barely wore T-shirts and shorts in such weather.
    25. What were the four boys doing when they heard the screams?
    A. Swimming in a rip current. B. Surfing on high waves.
    C. Struggling with their arms to shore. D. Practising diving in the sea.
    26. In the rescue, ____________.
    A. Andrian York dived back to call the police B. Keven Harder played the most important role
    C. Narayan Weibel tried to calm down the brothers D. Ortiz-Beck saved the larger and panicked brother
    27. Which of the following words can best describe the four surfers?
    A. Hardworking and friendly. B. Kind and humorous.
    C. Devoted and talented. D. Brave and determined.
    C
NASA has a new job listing, and it's no joke. The US space agency is looking for a "joker" to join their journey to Mars.
A journey to Mars is no laughing matter. On average, the red planet is 140 million miles away. A trip there would take around eight months in a small spaceship. As it is difficult to communicate, astronauts will have to wait 20 minutes for a reply when an emergency happens.
"When you're living with others in a confined space for a long time, problems will happen," said Jeffrey Johnson, a scientist at the University of Florida. This is probably why NASA wants an astronaut with a sense of humor. "These people have the ability to pull everyone together."
In stressful situations, perhaps humor is a way to know we aren't alone. By laughing together, we share stress, and then we can focus on our jobs instead of just worrying.
There are other examples of team "jokers". One example is the journey to the South Pole led by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, Adolf, a cook at Amundsen's team, was a "joker". He made people laugh through the whole difficult and dangerous journey, Amundsen later wrote that Adolf was the most valuable member of the team.
But if you're hoping that your favorite TV comedian will fly to Mars, that probably won't happen. "Being funny won't be enough to land somebody the job," Johnson said. "They also need to be an excellent scientist and engineer." Besides, they must be in top physical condition.
28.Who might get the job offered by NASA?
    A. A good cook. B. A talented joker.
    C. A humorous engineer. D. A popular comedian.
29.What does "a confined space" in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. a small space B. an open space C. a secure space D. an empty space
    30. How does the author think humor can help astronauts?
    A. Reminding them of their family. B. Bringing them closer on a journey.
    C. Helping them know themselves better. D. Helping them fix professional problems.
    31. Why does the author mention the example of the cook?
    A. To show the importance of their food.
    B. To prove the role of humor in difficult situations.
    C. To argue an actor is more important than a scientist.
    D. To explain a journey to the South Pole matters a lot.
    D
Scientists may have found a way to reduce shortage of type O blood. Type O is the kind of blood that hospitals most often need. What the researchers are testing is an easier way to make type O blood out of other kinds of blood.
There are four main kinds of blood. Most people born with one of these four: Type A, Type B, Type AB or Type O. Type O can be safely given to anyone. So it is commonly used when a person is injured or sick and has to have blood.
Type O is the most common blood group. But the supplies of it available in hospitals and blood banks are usually limited. This is because of the high demand for it. Type O blood is used in emergencies when there is no time to identify the patient’s blood type.
Giving A, B or AB to someone with a different blood type, including O, can cause a bad reaction by the person’s defense system. Their immune system (免疫系统) can reject the blood. This immune reaction can be deadly.
The differences among blood types are linked to whether or not red blood cells contain certain kinds of sugar molecules. These molecules are found on the surface of the cells. They are known as antigens (抗原). These antigens are found with type A, B and AB blood but not with type O.
A year ago, scientists found that the antigens could be removed to create what they called universal-type cells. They could be removed with chemicals called enzymes (酶). But large amounts of enzymes were required to make the change.
Doctor Henrik Clausen of the University of Copenhagen in Denmark led the study. The next step, he says, is to complete safety tests. The team is working with the American company ZymeQuest to test the new method. If it meets safety requirements, it could become a widely used life-saving tool to increase the supply of universal blood.
    32. How do scientists deal with the problem of lacking type O blood?
    A. Make type O blood out of other kinds of blood. B. Make the most of the present type O blood.
    C. Develop new ways of using type O blood. D. Appeal to more people to donate type O blood.
    33. What make people have different kinds of blood?
    A. Sugar molecules in red blood cells. B. People's different living conditions.
    C. The variety of people's cells and genes D. People's various immune systems.
    34. What can we infer from the text?
    A. Antigens could easily be removed to create universal blood.
    B. A Danish company wanted to involve itself in studying blood.
    C. Type O blood can be safely given to anyone.
    D. The new method is not safe enough to be put into use in hospitals now.
    35. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Four different kinds of blood. B. A new way to make type O blood.
    C. The latest research on blood type. D. Find the proper type of blood.

When things get wildly busy in the morning, some students like skipping breakfast to save time. 36 Whether at home, on the way to school or at school eating something healthy for breakfast may help a student get better grades. According to research, the students who ate a healthy breakfast were twice as likely to achieve above average in education as those who didn't.
Are there really many children who do not eat breakfast? 37 The study found that 39 percent of students reported eating breakfast fewer than three days in a usual school week.
Health experts suggest that the best breakfast is a mix of complex carbohydrates, protein and fat. This gives your body the energy it needs to think clearly and to remember what it learns. According to research, not all breakfasts are created equal. 38 The best breakfast should include complex carbohydrates that slowly release energy to the body.
39 They say eating between 350 and 500 calories in the morning is a good amount of energy to start the day.
A good breakfast is not just helpful to school-aged children. 40 A study from researchers at the University of Toronto in Canada found that a breakfast rich in protein and complex carbohydrates increased performance on short-term and long-term memory. Carbohydrates and protein are especially important because they have a major effect on long-term memory.
    A. The answer is yes.
    B. Students don't know about it.
    C. But they think it may be harmful to their health.
    D. But that may be a big mistake for students.
    E. We all benefit from eating something healthy in the morning.
    F. Some breakfasts are not able to give the brain what it needs to work at its highest level.
    G. However, eating too much can also make a person feel tired and unable to think clearly.
