Around this time of year when the weather gets cooler in Arkansas, there are a lot of homeless people, as well as people with different situations who just need help.
Oftentimes Our family serves at a soup kitchen where they give out bags of food to needy families in our area. And we’ll help put those bags of food together and hand them out, among other things.
There are a lot of reasons why serving the community is important to me, but one of them has to do with my father. My grandfather died when my father was 4 years old and my grandmother had four kids all under the age of 5, all born pretty close together. That was a time when things were so bad in the country. There wasn’t work and often the family hardly made ends meet(收支相抵), so my grandmother put the kids in a childrenˈs home so that they could at least have food to survive.
My dad said he never forgot the local charity would bring the kids a gift for Christmas. The kids worked hard in the children’s home and the only present they got was from the local charity. He never forgot this kindness and always appreciated the local charity for what it did when he Was a little boy.
My dad was such a hardworking worker- family meant the world to him. I was the seventh baby in my family and my mother had me just after she turned 40. She was one of those high-risk pregnancy moms, and Iˈm so grateful she had me. My mom and dad made a happy home for us, and I’m so grateful for that. I hope my children are catching those lessons, not just from Mom and Dad, but from grandparents and everyone else in their lives.

D.His father worked hard and took good care of the family.
29.Why did the author’s grandmother put the kids in a childrenˈs home?
A.The family had too many children.
B.The kids were born too close together.
C.It provided food for the kids to survive.
D.The kids could lead a very comfortable life there.
30.Which can best describe the author’s father?
A.Kind and creative. B.Strict and helpful.
C.Devoted and patient. D.Grateful and hardworking.
31.What can we learn from the passage ?
A.Father meant the world to the family.
B.The author hopes his kids learn to be grateful.
C.The kids received Christmas gifts from their parents.
D.The author’s family opens a soup kitchen to offer help.
    D
Lazy people will never gain anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.
One way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep. Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting your sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.
Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from task to task. Others take a more positive approach, viewing each task as a challenge they must overcome alone. Laziness appears when you no longer feel in charge of your own mind.
Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often contributes to laziness. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for a child. Complete a few tasks and reward yourself with what you enjoy, such as a good dinner or a film.
Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with immediately. To fight family laziness, set an example. Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own task. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated (积极的) people.
Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness. Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help lift your spirits.
32.How many ways have been mentioned in this passage to defeat laziness?
    A.3 B.4 C.5 D.6
33.According to Paragraph 2, we can know that ________.
A.people who don’t get enough sleep must be lazy
B.people who lack of motivation must be lazy
C.people who stay up too late and get up too early must be lazy
D.people who adjust their sleep schedule mustn’t be lazy
34.The underlined word “temptations” is closest in meaning to _______.
    A.tradition B.reaction C.attractions D.introduction
35.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
    A.How to fight laziness?
B.Laziness does no harm to our life.
    C. Lazy people will never gain anything.
    D.Laziness can never be defeated.

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m pleased to announce the winner of the 2018 song-writing competition. (17) As you probably know, every year, young songwriters from our town enter our annual spring competition held here in the beautiful Brook Theater. (19) When local musician Fred McGill started the event four years ago, (17) we had no idea how much it would grow. In 2017, over 100 people sent in their songs. This year the number of people who participated doubled. (18) It’s wonderful to see the talent and energy of the next generation. Our judges were amazed by the musical skills they saw and heard. Congratulations to all the teenagers who sent in their songs. It was a difficult choice, but our committee has made a selection. Let’s clap our hands for Maryanne James! Maryanne, where are you? Please join me on stage! (19) There she is! Maryanne, we loved the way you sang about everything from the colors of your garden to the eyes of children. Please accept this prize. We hope it encourages you to continue writing songs when you start music school in the fall. Finally, we’d like to ask you to perform a song for our audience. (20)
