Befre the print was brught t England in 1476, everything was written by hand. The few peple wh knew hw t write were trained in schls set up by the church. Thse wh made a living by writing fr ther peple were called scribes.
The wrk f scribes was nt easy. Much f it had t be dne fast in rder t meet the needs f the King, the church and traders. Mst f the writing was in Latin, but sme f it was in English f the day. N ne was quite sure hw sme English wrds shuld be spelled.
One prblem was that several letters were written with shrt vertical strke that all lked like each ther. Amng them were the letters “i”“u”“v”“m” and “n”. Thus, five straight lines in a rw might stand fr “uni” “nui” “uvi” r “mii”. As a result, reading was smetimes difficult, especially when the writing was dne in a hurry.
The scribes slved the prblem in part, by changing the letter “u” t “” when it came befre “m” “n” r “v”. This is hw sum and cum became t be written as sme and cme.
At sme pint t, the scribes seemed t have decided that n English wrd shuld be ended by “u” r “v”. Thus, in time an “e” was added t such wrds as “live” “have” “due” and “true”. It was added, but nt prnunced.
