Purchasing a large area f frest far frm dwntwn fr a giant nature preserve, r buying a netwrk f smaller patches f frest thrughut twn that add up t the same size, which is better fr prtecting species in and arund twn when yu nly have limited resurces? This SLOSS debate—a single large r several small—has been cnfusing cnservatin bilgists and land managers fr lng.
Thrughut the debate, bth sides have exchanged strng and cnvincing pints. Sme believe that a single large nature preserve is better. Mathematically, in the same area, ne large circle has less land expsed t the edges than fur small nes f the same area. And many species dn’t like edges. Fr example, sme species such as muntain lins require a lt f space t reside, while thers prefer central frested areas far frm edges. If a nature preserve is split int many small patches, they will hardly attract these species t settle dwn. In rder t prtect rare species, it is necessary t have a larger preserve.
Hang n. What if ne has t purchase a large area f land in places that are highly urbanized? Despite the incredible cst, it might even be impssible t find a huge amunt f land there. In that case, it is wise t have a netwrk f several small nature preserves. This set-up may make the preserves easier t manage. Sme land with sensitive prperties culd be enclsed by fences, while ther parts culd be transfrmed int walking trails. Additinally, having several small preserves means mre bilgical diversity. Different species exist in different varieties f land. It is als much easier t prtect sme species frm disturbances like wildfires, which culd destry everything.
The SLOSS debate may nt simply end with an abslute answer. Hwever, it is very meaningful t have debates like SLOSS as it gives bth scientists and land managers the pprtunity t discuss the best slutin fr prtecting lcal wildlife, depending n the situatin at hand.

1.根据上一句“S it may surprise yu t knw that ver 100, 000 dgs are abandned every year in the UK.”
2.根据上一句“Cuncils ften wrk with animal charities t lk after and re-hme abandned dgs.”可知委员会与慈善机构很多时候会对这些被遗弃的狗妥善处理,结合下文“If dg wners dn’t claim the dg within seven days r there is n lcal shelter t take the dg, they have t be put t sleep.”
3.根据下一句“There are several factrs.”
4.根据上文“Of curse, nt all the dgs n the street are abandned.I had a brder cllie(牧羊犬)wh ran away quite a few times just fr the fun f it.”
5.根据前文“If yu wish t help thse animals wh are nt s frtunate as t have a lving family, please dnate r vlunteer at any f the many charities that help dgs in need.”可知作者提到如果想帮助这些被遗弃的狗,可通过给慈善机构捐赠或者做志愿者的方式对它们提供帮助,结合下文“T be hnest, they merely rely n the genersity f the British public.”

故填what。
故填are built。
故填which。
be afraid f...
故填their。
故填used。
