Selections of Travelers
COMO POINT YAMU
This is a light-filled design heaven. Sharp lines frame views of Phuket’s east coast and a swimming pool overlooks the Bay. The restaurants are equally stylish — Nahmyaa was given a Michelin Plate for its southern Thai dishes, and there’s also a private beach club on a nearby island, which more than makes up for the hotel’s own lack of golden sands.
ROOMS: Villas from £208, B&B. www. comohotels. com
OUR JUNGLE CAMP
Set on the mainland around a three-hour drive north of Phuket lies an old rainforest. Our Jungle Camp’s bamboo huts and tree houses are minimalist and cool enough in the evening. There’s a great restaurant on site and the camp can arrange a variety of activities, including nature hikes and rafting along lazy rivers.
ROOMS: From £15, room only. www. khaosokecoresort. com
THANYAPURA
Go for gold at this fitness resort in the island’s jungle heart. Top athletes come here to take advantage of the excellent facilities, including two swimming pools, tennis courts and boxing rings. Rooms are simple but have everything you need, including comfy beds and power showers.
ROOMS: Villas from £70, B&B. www. thanyapura. com
SALA PHUKET MAI KHAO BEACH
Sala Phuket is perfect for a laid-back beach break. Everything there seems to have been designed to put you at ease: the calming villas and the swimming pool sunken into the lawn. You can spend the day on the beach with a book or relaxing at the spa. The food is superb, too-pastries for breakfast, papaya salads and red curries for lunch and lobster for dinner.

When I was a boy, my father told me that he could do anything he wanted to. Dad said that he wanted to be the first to develop color prints in our city, and so he did.
When I was 16, Dad looked closely at the violin I played and announced that he wanted to make one. He read about violin making, and then became a violin maker at the age of 43. He bought the tools and materials, opened a small store and set Mom up as the shopkeeper, while he worked at a local company. He retired from the company 17 years later and continued to make violins and other instruments.
Dad often guessed why the Stradivarius violins sound so beautiful. Some experts claimed that it was the unique varnish (油漆) that gave those instruments their beautiful sound. Dad argued that chemists could analyze the varnish—if that were the answer.
One of Dad’s friends asked him once which kind of wood was used to make violins. When Dad explained that the top was made of spruce (云杉), his friend said that he had an old piece of spruce Dad might be interested in. He worked for the next 12 months making a violin from the wood that his friend had given him. It proved to be a superior violin and it would become Dad’s masterpiece. He was convinced that the secret of the Stradivarius sound was in the wood itself.
Later, the instrument was stolen. Dad’s spirit was broken by the robbery, and he stopped making instruments. But he kept the music shop until he was 80 years old, selling guitars and violins.
24. Why did the author mention his father’s developing color prints?
A. To prove that his father could do anything he wanted to.
B. To give an example proving that his father was an inventor.
C. To show that his father’s real interest was not in making violins.
D. To describe the real thing that made the author believe his father.
25. When did the author’s father start being a violin maker?
A. When he was a boy. B. When he was 16 years old.
C. When he was 17 years old. D. When he was 43 years old.
26. In the father’s opinion, why did Stradivarius violins sound so beautiful?
A. Because of the unique varnish of the violins. B. Because of the special wood of the violins.
C. Because of the special way of making them. D. Because of the special way of playing them.
27. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The author’s father liked the violin very much.
B. The author’s father died because the violin was stolen.
C. The author’s father got crazy after the violin was stolen.
D. The author’s father lost interest in instruments after the violin was stolen.

Fahad Azad, an engineer in India, invented a robot named DuctBot. The toy-car sized DuctBot measured 23 centimeters in length, 19 centimeters in width and 9 centimeters in height and weighed just two kilograms.
The robot is designed to snake through dark, narrow air conditioning ducts(管道) and clean them. A pair of LEDs fitted on the robot light up the dirty scenery, so it can be captured(抓拍) by a camera.
In order to control it more easily, Mr. Azad chooses to fix DuctBot on wheels. The robot can clean off lots of dirt, as well as dead pigeons and insects. Keeping indoor air in good quality and monitoring carbon-dioxide levels in buildings with central air conditioning is a challenge. It is important in some places where clean air can mean a difference between life and death, such as hospitals. Dirty air has a bad influence on peopled health.
EPSCO, a Dubai-based company which specializes in improving indoor air quality, read about Mr. Azad’s invention in a national newspaper after he had won an international robotics competition. EPSCO had cleaning equipment, but it needed someone to get into those ducts to do the dirty, dangerous work. Across India, for example, the task still falls to children. They are small enough to go through those ducts.
In 2005 Mr. Azad who was still at university decided to do something about it. Six years later his own company, Robosoft Systems, has Bluestar, EPSCO and the Indian Navy, some leading air condition makers, as partners.
Mr. Azad and his ten employees are currently exploring robot designs to examine oil tanks or sewage(污水) pipes. Their biggest challenge is to make the robots user-friendly enough. Mr. Azad hopes that the robot could eventually be operated not by engineers but by workers. There will be lots of difficulties they need to overcome in the future.
28. What can we learn about DuctBot?
A. It is small and light. B. It is a toy car and popular with children.
C. It specializes in improving indoor air quality. D. It is actually a camera to capture dirty scenery.
29. Why did Fahad Azad invent DuctBot?
A. To make money.
B. To light up the dirty scenery.
C. To monitor carbon-dioxide levels in buildings.
D. To snake through air conditioning ducts and clean them.
30. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. EPSCO. B. The LEDs. C. DuctBot. D. The duct.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards DuctBot?
A. Critical. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.
【答案】28. A29. D30. C31. B

When it comes to praising your child for their actions, parents walk a fine line between being helpful or harmful to their child’s development. However, if you’ve got some rising kids in your home that need to learn to brush their teeth, don’t worry. It’s just fine to praise them.
“Our study does suggest that praise can be a really positive feature of parenting. Praise wins the gold when compared to boring instruction, at least when it comes to dental hygiene (口腔卫生). You can’t go wrong if you say ‘good job!’ when your child successfully brushes their own teeth,” said Julia Leonard, an assistant professor of psychology at Yale University.
The study followed 81 three-year-old just learning to brush their teeth. Parents were required to video their child’s tooth-brushing endeavors (尝试) for 16 nights, hitting record as they handed the brush to their child and pushing stop when they took it back.
That allowed researchers to capture all of the parent’s praise “Well done! Good job!”—and instructional endeavors such as “Brush the backs of your teeth.” and “Hey, don’t stop. You’re not done yet.” After uploading the videos, parents were told to score their child’s mood (extremely bad to extremely good) and their own stress levels during the nightly endeavor. Those scores ranged from a scale of 0 (easy-peasy) to 10 (I’m pulling all their teeth out now).
Interestingly, a child’s tooth brushing success was directly related to the level of praise in the parents’ talk. Children brushed longer on days when their parents used more praise and less instruction. The work is the first to show that parent praise relates to child’s persistence (坚持不懈).
However, the study could not show a direct cause and effect, only an association, Leonard stressed. “We don’t know that praise causes kids to brush longer. We just know it’s associated with more brushing, she said. More research is needed to see if the study’s findings could be applied to other tasks that require a child’s persistence.
32. What can be inferred from Julia Leonard’s words?
A. Praise can make children honest.
B. Praise can make a positive effect on children.
C. Saying “good job!” to children can be wrong.
D. Praise always fails when compared to boring instruction.
33. How did Julia Leonard get data for her research?
A. By interviewing kids. B. By using old databases.
C. By collecting recordings from parents. D. By asking parents to do questionnaires.
34. According to this passage, what did the research find?
A. Over-praising didn’t lead to ideal results.
B. Praise caused kids to brush longer directly.
C. Praise helped to build a good habit — persistence.
D. Instruction had greater effects on tooth brushing.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. More Instruction, Longer Brushing B. The Power of Parents
C. The Benefits of Building Persistence D. Parents: Show your kids praise
【答案】32. B33. C34. C35. D
