While travel is restricted during this time, here are some amazing places around the world to daydream about and look forward to visiting one day in the future.
    Lord Howe Island, Australia
The island in the Tasman Sea lies between Australia and New Zealand and is just 10km long. Despite its complete isolation, the island is populated, by around 380 people and the number of tourists is limited to under 400. The island is known for its geology, birds, plants and marine life, while cycling is the main mode of transport on the island, thanks to its virtually untouched forest and the fact that many of its plants and animals are found nowhere else in the world.
    Thor’s Well, Oregon
Also called “the drainpipe of the Pacific” or even sometimes, “the gate to hell”, the hole appears to swallow the Pacific Ocean. Geyser-like ocean sprays erupt in winter time, thanks to ocean pressure and the gusting wind. It looks more dangerous than it is though; it is in reality just around 20 feet deep. The natural bowl is spectacular to watch, particularly during low tide when the sea rises towards the surface before draining back down into the depths of the rocky hole again.
Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods), Hawaii
Hawaiians call Keahiakawelo “wahi pana”, which means celebrated, noted or legendary places which have cultural significance. As legend goes, the priest of neighboring Molokai island, a man named Lanikaula, was angry at the people of Lanai, so he lit a fire wishing ill will to the island’s people.
Balamku (Cave of the Jaguar God), Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico
The cave was rediscovered accidentally in 2018 by archaeologists who were searching for a sacred well. The seven-chambered cave was initially discovered in 1966 but was sealed up and forgotten about. Caves were considered openings to the underworld, and this one is no different. The name means jaguar god, which they believed had the ability to enter and leave the underworld at will. The cave is so unexplored that archaeologists are still mapping it out.
    21. How do people often travel on Lord Howe Island?
    A. By boat. B. By bike. C. On foot. D. By car.
    22. What is the best time to watch Thor’s Well?
    A. During low tide. B. In winter time. C. When the sea rises. D. After the sea dries.
    23. Which of the following is thought to be the opening to the underworld?
    A. Lord Howe Island. B. Thor’s Well. C. Keahiakawelo. D. Balamku.

Anyone interested in easy ways to make a positive impact on their communities need look no further than 12-year-old Danykah Muck, a Michigan middle-schooler whose simple learning project is an inspiration to positive thinkers of any age. It all started with her way to school every school day. Every morning she would greet an old man in her neighborhood, who she still doesn’t know his name, smiling or even simply offering a friendly word “hello”. And he would always nod and smile back. “It seems to considerably change the emotional energy around me in the community,” She noticed this in both directions, “That simple act can both change our entire day with how they greet me.”
Last spring, Muck brought an idea to her teachers. She provided them with a pile of sticky notes she had filled with brief — sometimes one-word — positive messages. She then asked the teachers to place the notes on students’ desks before they arrived at school the next day. She also gave pre-filled sticky notes to the lunch staff and to school administrators including the principal. The idea was to make it easy for teachers, staff and students to regularly encounter reminders that they matter and are valued. “You are enough just being you,” reads one favorite note. Muck’s idea could be just the thing in an office, assisted living facility or even at home for a small family.
“Low-cost” positive interactions, like a friendly word offered to the postal worker or coffee shop servant, are shown by psychology researchers to build sympathy and abate loneliness. An anonymous note sent into someone’s inbox or stuck to their front door is perhaps the lowest-cost connection there is, with potential benefits beyond our imagination. Sometimes the smallest encouragements have the biggest impact. What would you say on a sticky note to share with someone in your community?
    24. What message does paragraph 1 convey?
    A. Middle-schoolers are friendly to the elderly. B. A simple act of kindness makes a difference.
    C. A community can be easily shaped by interest. D. Learning projects can inspire positive thinkers.
    25. How did Muck help people in her school?
    A. By writing thank-you letters. B. By means of sticking notices.
    C. By talking with school leaders. D. By writing encouraging words.
    26. What does the underlined word “abate” probably mean?
    A. Measure. B. Monitor. C. Ease. D. Stand.
    27. The best title for the text is probably ______.
    A. What a friendly word means to a stranger B. Never be bothered by negative thoughts
    C. Brighten the community with positivity D. How to build a harmonious community
    C

The twilight (朦胧的) time between full wakefulness and being sound asleep may be packed with creative potential. Rumor has it that Thomas Edison, the famous inventor, used to prefer such moments between wakefulness and sleep. Supposedly, he used to fall asleep in a chair holding two steel balls. As he fell asleep, the balls fell into metal pans. The resulting sound woke him. Then, he could write down his inventive ideas before he fell into a deep sleep and forgot them.
Researchers tested Edison’s method of developing creativity with 103 healthy people. Volunteers came to the lab to solve a tricky number problem. After doing the task 60 times, they earned a 20-minute break in a quiet, dark room. They relaxed in chairs, each holding a light drinking bottle, something like the steel balls that Edison used. Participants were told to close their eyes and rest or sleep if they desired. Meanwhile, machines monitored their brain waves. About half of the participants stayed awake. Twenty-four fell asleep and stayed in the shallow short stage of sleep called N1. Fourteen others progressed to N2, a deeper stage of sleep.
After their rest, participants returned to their number problem. The researchers saw a clear difference between the groups. People with a shallow early sleep were 2.7 times as likely to spot the hidden trick as people who stayed awake. Shallow sleepers were 5.8 times as likely to spot the trick as people who reached the deeper N2 stage.
Such differences in such experiments are rare, says Delphine Oudiette, a cognitive neuroscientist. “The results raise an interesting possibility. It may help people to learn to reach that twilight stage of sleep on demand. It seems Edison was onto something about the creative powers of nodding off. But don’t put too much faith in his habits. He also is said to have considered sleep ‘a criminal waste of time’.”
    32. Why is Thomas Edison mentioned in paragraph 1?
    A. To imply the inspiration of the study. B. To explain how habits can help.
    C. To support the idea theoretically. D. To lay scientific basis of the study.
    33. What can be known about the drinking bottle?
    A. It belonged to Thomas Edison. B.It was made of a kind of steel.
    C. It may serve as an alarm o’clock. D.It was in the shape of a metal pan.
    34. What did the study find?
    A. Being awake is as creative as being asleep. B. Wakefulness differs from sleep in many aspects.
    C. Being asleep is more productive than wakefulness. D. Shallow sleepers may be better problem solvers later.
    35. How does Oudiette like the study?
    A. Ridiculous. B. Doubtful. C. Realistic. D. Useful.
    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Dealing with an uncertain future can be scary, but thinking about, and taking steps to create, a positive future is vitally important.
◆Use hope to cope. One of the biggest things people are struggling with is feeling stuck in the difficult present and afraid to look to the future. 36 Studies show that hope leads us to maximize psychological adjustment by reducing anxiety, increasing motivation, and helping us pursue goal-directed actions.
◆ 37 It’s crucial to your emotional well-being to continue planning and dreaming for the future, even when that future looks uncertain. “Suspend your reality for the moment, and allow yourself to feel happy about this imagined future,” said Dr. Waters. “Just let your brain dream.”
◆Dare to dream small. On a small scale, make plans with friends to meet for a walk or to go for dinner. Think of outings you and your loved ones can look forward to, movies or sporting events or even trips to the mall. There’s no need to try to pin down when these things might happen. 38
◆Consider making changes. Use this time of sheltering-in-place as an opportunity to reflect on any changes you’d like to make in your life. 39 Once you decide what changes would be beneficial, come up with specific steps you can take to enact them when the time is right. You can always adapt your plans as the situation continues to evolve.
◆Look for the positive sides. 40 It is a long lane that has no turning. So you don’t need to be optimistic to see them. Maybe you’re learning to budget better or to be happier with less. Maybe you’re seeing the benefits of getting back to basics. Whatever it is, acknowledge the new shift and be grateful.
    A. Dare to dream big.
    B. Never lose your heart.
    C. This is where hope comes in.
    D. Positive anticipation can be as rewarding as the events themselves.
    E. Even the worst of times usually bring with them some unexpected blessings.
    F. However, that doesn’t mean you’re ignoring the hardships you’re going through.
    G. For example, many are reinvesting in relationships or spending more time with family.

    第二节:
    Possible version
    Dear Tom,
Glad to know you’re interested in Chinese Zodiac Signs. Here I’d like to tell something about it.
Legend has it that 12 animals had a quarrel one day as to who was to head the cycle of years. The gods asked them to have a race to decide their place. The rat somehow won the race. The pig, who was very lazy, ended up last.
Interestingly, we Chinese believe people born in a certain animal year may share the same characters. For example, those born under the Year of the Tiger are sensitive, emotional and thoughtful but may also intend to be impatient. They have strong leadership qualities, and are ready to pounce any time.

    【听力录音原文】
    Text 1
M: What a mess! Mary, give your mother a hand. The guests are coming!
W: I know, but I’m doing my homework.
    Text 2
M: I have to tell you that your dog got really sick last night, and I found him dead this morning.
W: Why didn’t you take him to hospital in time?
M: I’m very sorry. I was so tired that I didn’t wake up until this morning.
    Text 3
W: Can I help you, sir?
M: Yeah. I seem to have lost my room key.
W: In that case, you need to go to the front desk to get their help.
    Text 4
W: Have you heard about the Russian plane crash in Egypt?
M: Yes, it’s terrible. 224 people lost their lives.
W: What a pity! To be honest, I always feel a little nervous while travelling by plane now.
    Text 5
M: Did you see Mary when you went to London with your daughter last month?
W: No, I didn’t. I dropped by her house and her husband told me that she had gone to Spain on business.
    M: What a pity!
    Text 6
M: How do you like your new job, Wendy?
    W: It’s OK, I guess... Actually, it’s a little frustrating.
M: Oh, that’s too bad. Why?
W: Well, I don’t know how to use the computer system. It’s very confusing.
M: Why don’t you ask for some more training?
W: Yeah. I guess I could do that, but that’s not the only thing I don’t like. I also have to give factory tours. That’s really difficult! I can’t stand speaking in front of a group of people.
M: Hmm. I have never had such a problem. But I think you should let your boss know that.
    W: You’re right. I will.
    Text 7
W: David, look! I’ve got a smart phone now.
M: Is it a gift from your father? Or did you go downtown to buy it yesterday?
W: Neither. I placed an online order yesterday morning and I received the package at 4 p.m. By the way, could you recommend some apps for me to download?
M: Sure. If you love reading news, I suggest you use Feedly. It’s the easiest way to stay on top of all your news in one app.
W: Thanks. Do you know any good apps that can help me prepare for exams?
M: Yes. You can input the things you want to remember in Exam Time. There are flashcards, quizzes and notes in this app. It’s convenient for you to use.
W: What app do you use to help you organize your life?
    M: Ever note.
W: Thanks. I’ll definitely try these three apps.
    Text 8
M: I really enjoyed the art lesson yesterday.
W: Me too, David. I liked going into the city to draw different places. Is this your picture of the museum?
M: Yes. What did you draw?
W: I couldn’t decide between the castle and the market. In the end, I did a drawing of people buying vegetables in the market. Did you see what Luke drew?
M: Yes. His picture was of some people in the park having a picnic.
W: Well, I know that Mary loves drawing water. Did she go to the river?
M: No. She went to the sports center and drew some children having a swimming lesson. What about Patrick?
W: We were walking to the market together but then he saw someone cleaning windows at the bank and stopped to draw that.
M: Christina is the best artist. I saw her on Bridge Street sitting at a table having a drink. She was drawing a waiter talking to a customer. The picture looked really good.
    Text 9
    M: What are you reading?
W: A biography of Mark Twain.
M: Oh, I’ve read his books: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. It’s quite interesting and adventurous.
W: Yeah. But this book I’m reading is kind of boring. It tells you some facts about Mark Twain, though.
M: Oh, tell me something about him.
W: You know when Mark Twain was four, his family moved to Hannibal, a port town on the Mississippi River that gave him the idea for the fictional town in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
    M: Oh, really? Anything else?
W: In 1847, when Twain was 11, his father died. The next year, he began to learn printing. When he was 18, he worked as a printer in New York City. Then on a voyage to New Orleans, steamboat pilot Horace inspired Twain to become a pilot. Twain thought it rewarding to be a pilot and he studied 2,000 miles of the Mississippi for more than two years before he received his steamboat pilot license in 1859. This occupation gave him his pen name, Mark Twain, from “mark twain”, the cry for a measured river depth.
M: Oh, he himself really had a life of adventures.
    Text 10
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is one of the most popular technologies in the 21st century. It can be a computer that beats you in the chess game. It can be a robot that helps with your housework. It can also be a program that writes songs. Aiva is such a program.
Aiva is created by some computer programmers. They put thousands of songs by famous musicians in her. After she learns about those songs, Aiva finds her own way to write songs. If the programmers tell Aiva what they want about the song, the artist can make it in just a few minutes.
Aiva is the first world-famous AI song writer. Plenty of her songs have been used in films, games and ads, although people hardly know about it. Now Aiva can write classical music only. The programmers plan to give her more, so she will be able to write all kinds of songs.
There is no need to worry that AI will take musicians’ work. Instead, it will work together with humans and make better songs.
