The village of Misfat al-Abriyeen has changed its fortunes by transforming mud-brick homes into fine hotels. The village of 800 people, located on the cliffs of Oman's “Grand Canyon”, opened its narrow streets six years ago to foreigners and locals seeking adventure in the deserts and green corners of the Gulf area.
Villager Yacoub al-Abri said it all started in 2010 when his uncle suggested they take another look at the mud houses that had lain ignored for years in the ancient settlement about three hours' drive from the capital Muscat. The owners had abandoned the centuries-old homes, fearing they could topple, and moved to the opposite side of the village where they built new accommodation.
The brown-walled homes, made of mud bricks with palm-leave roofs, were turned into simple but elegant inns with wood furniture and handcrafts made using skills handed down from their ancestors. “We started with only five rooms, and then we increased the number and bought other old houses. Today we have 15 rooms and there are plans to continue expanding until we reach 50,” Yacoub said.
At an altitude of more than 1,000 meters, the tiny village which is home to the Abri tribe is a charming collection of traditional houses located along dozens of small alleys overlooking lands bursting with banana plants and citrus (柑橘) and palm trees. It is part of a region known as the Grand Canyon of Oman where tourists can hike the rock mountains and valleys, and explore the old ways of local people. The region is also famed for its centuries-old stories that are still widely told in similar villages across the country.
Renoda, a Dutch psychologist living in Muscat, was visiting with three of her friends. “It's perhaps the 10th time that I have visited this hotel since last year. I come here fora night or two every month seeking calm, relaxation and comfort,” she told AFP.
    24. What does the underlined word “topple” in paragraph 2 mean?
    A. Move. B. Shrink. C. Disappear. D. Fall.
    25. What are the rooms of the village hotels like?
    A. Splendid. B. Traditional. C. Ordinary. D. Outdated.
    26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
    A. The unique lifestyle of the local people. B. The special location of the small village.
    C. The reasons for the popularity of the village. D. The introduction of the history of the village.
    27. What can be inferred about Renoda?
    A. Visiting the villagers is part of her work. B. She enjoys adventurous traveling.
    C. She lives a stressful life in the city. D. She wants to settle in the village.

To promote employees' creativity, managers should consider offering a set of rewards for them to choose from, according to a new study by management experts at Rice University.
The study, co-authored by Jing Zhou, Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of Management and Psychology at Rice's Jones Graduate School of Business, is the first to systematically examine the effects of reward choice in a field experiment, which was conducted in the context of an organization-wide suggestion program.
“Organizations spend a lot of resources and make a great deal of effort in designing incentive (激励的) plans that reward the employees who exhibit creativity at work,” Zhou said. “Our results showed that the effort may be a bit misplaced. Instead of discovering one reward type that is particularly effective at promoting creativity, what is more effective is to provide the employees with the opportunity to choose from several reward types, if they submit one or more ideas that are among the top 20% most creative ones.”
Workers in the study were given a range of options: a financial reward for the individual employee or their team, a self-discretionary (自己自由决定的) reward such as getting priority to select days off, or a donation the company made to a charity selected by the employee. Those choices had positive, significant effects on the number of creative ideas employees thought up and the creativity level of those ideas.
The studies also found that rewards aimed at helping others, such as making a donation to a charity, might be especially powerful. But for less-creative employees, alternative rewards that benefit those in need might actually lower creativity and should be avoided.
The researchers also found that the choice of rewards developed creativity by raising the employees' belief in their ability to be creative. Alternative rewards also had a powerful impact on promoting the creativity of employees who earlier had scored high on an assessment of creative personality characteristics.
    28. Why was the study conducted?
    A. To promote employees' creativity. B. To discover and reward creative employees.
    C. To set an example to other organizations. D. To examine the effects of different reward choices.
    29. Which statement would Professor Zhou agree with?
    A. It's ambitious to examine the effects of reward choice.
    B. It's necessary to confirm which reward is the most effective.
    C. It's advisable to let employees choose their own favorite reward types.
    D. It's inappropriate to choose from the top 20% most creative employees.
    30. What reward would be least beneficial to less-creative employees?
    A. Financial reward. B. Assessment priority.
    C. Occupation promotion. D. Charity donation.
    31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Choice of rewards promotes creativity
    B. Financial rewards can motivate employees
    C. Use resources effectively to promote creativity
    D. Effects of rewards on employees can't be ignored
    D
Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT,麻省理工学院) have turned spider webs into music—creating a strange soundtrack that could help them better understand how the spiders output their complex creations and even how they communicate.
The MIT team worked with Berlin-based artist Tomas Saraceno to take 2D (two-dimensional) laser (激光) scans of a spider web, which were linked together and made into a mathematical model that could recreate the web in 3D in VR(virtual reality). They also worked with MIT's music department to create the virtual instrument.
“Even though the web looks really random, there actually are a lot of inside structures and you can visualize them and you can look at them, but it's really hard for the human imagination or human brain to understand all these structural details,” said MIT engineering professor Markus Buehler, who presented the work on Monday at a virtual meeting of the American Chemical Society.
Listening to the music while moving through the VR spider web lets you see and hear these structural changes and gives a better idea of how spiders see the world, he told CNN. “Spiders use vibrations (振动) as a way to locate themselves, to communicate with other spiders and so the idea of thinking really like a spider was something that was very important to us as spider material scientists,” Buehler said.
Spiders are able to build their webs without shelves or supports, so having a better idea of how they work could lead to the development of advanced new 3D printing techniques. “The reason why I did that is I wanted to be able to get information really from the spider world, which is very weird and mysterious,” Buehler explained. In addition to the scientific value, Buehler said the webs are musically interesting and that you can hear the sounds the spider creates during construction. “It's unusual and strange and scary, but finally beautiful,” he described.
    32. What have MIT scientists done according to the passage?
    A. They have translated spider webs into sounds.
    B. They have made a mathematical model to produce webs.
    C. They have created a soundtrack to catch spiders.
    D. They have known how spiders communicate.
    33. What can we know about spider webs from paragraph 3?
    A. Their structures are beautiful and clear.
    B. Professor Markus Buehler knows them well.
    C. The American Chemical Society presents the result.
    D. They are complex for people to figure out.
    34. In which field will the study be helpful?
    A. Virtual reality. B. Printing. C. Painting. D. Film-making.
    35. What is the main idea of the passage?
    A. It tells us that the music created by spiders is scary.
    B. It shows how the researchers carry out the experiment.
    C. It presents a new and creative way to study spiders.
    D. It explains why scientists did the experiment.
Putting children in daycare helps working parents take their minds off childcare. 36
How daycare negatively affects children is related to many factors. One study has shown that children who are shy have a higher level of the hormone cortisol (皮质醇) which is released when an individual shows signs of stress. 37 And as a result the child may not mix well with others at the daycare center, a situation that can cause stress.
Another negative impact of daycare is that there is less communication between a mother and her child. 38 So it is essential for a child to develop a deep bond with his or her mother, since this will lay the foundation for all the relationships he or she will form later on in life. Children who spend a lot of time with their mothers experience healthier social and emotional development.
Children in daycare centers also feel unprotected compared to children at home. In a daycare center, when one caregiver attends to more than one child at the same time, she may not be able to look deeply into why a child is mixing well or not. 39
40 Well-maintained daycare centers contribute a great deal to the overall development of a child by providing a structured environment. Children become more social by interacting with other children of the same age, and learn new activities that are not always available if they are brought up only at home.
    A. But daycare has its disadvantages.
    B. Look for a well-maintained daycare center.
    C. However, the advantages of daycare cannot be ignored.
    D. This is because à shy child won't open up freely in public.
    E. Babies become extremely attached to their primary caregivers.
    F. In such cases, a child may become either completely quiet or aggressive.
    G. Mothers need cut the time in daycare centers and accompany children more often.

When David was nine and Laura was twelve, the battles started. Before that, they got along great. Laura was always protective of her little brother, and he in turn, was very fond of her.
Maybe it was about needing space or demanding independence. Whatever the reason was, it drove my husband and me crazy. It would start over the smallest of excuses. One minute the house would be quiet, and the next they'd be shouting at one another. And on and on it would go. Until, finally, one of us would have to step in. And there would be a truce (停战)...sort of. At least until the next fight. Our once happy home was being turned into a war area.
One night, in hopelessness, we called the kids into the living room and told them how upsetting their behavior was. We asked them for ideas about how we could regain peace in the family.
We asked each of them to come up with a half dozen appropriate results that we could apply the next time they had a fight.
The following day we were presented with a list of results from each. Some even looked pretty good. Examples: Clean the other person's room; Do the dishes for the other person; Hug and make up, etc.
We decided to arrange those results around the edge of a board, and then we attached a spinning arrow (旋转箭头) in the middle. When you gave it a spin, the arrow would finally stop and point to one of the results. Then we hung the board up in the kitchen. We crossed our fingers, and waited.
It was amazing. Just the existence of the board, hanging on our kitchen wall, had an immediate calming effect on the atmosphere in our home. But it only took about ten days before peace was destroyed by another battle. So we called them both into the kitchen.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
We took the board down off the wall and placed it on the table. _________________________________________
    ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In the same spirit, we ended up making boards with other themes. _______________________________________

22.A。 根据 Work Description 部分对 Airfield Supervisor的描述“Coordinate (协调) day-to-day activities of the crew(协调工作人员的日常活动)”可知,该岗位要求擅长与人沟通。
23.B。 根据第一段中的“The candidates with previous work experience will be preferable.(有工作经验者优先)”和 Minimum Qualifications and Skills 部分中的“Speak and understand English(会说并懂英语)”及“Valid driver’s license for at least 1 full year with a clean driving record(至少一整年的有效驾驶执照和良好的驾驶记录)”可知,B项 An experienced British driver who used to work at a laundry.(一位曾在洗衣店工作且驾驶经验丰富的英国司机)可以申请这个工作,故选B。
根据第二段中的“the mud houses that had lain ignored for years in the ancient settlement(在这个古老的定居点里,被忽视多年的泥屋)”“The owners had abandoned the centuries-old homes(房主们放弃了这些有几百年历史的房子)”和“and moved to the opposite side of the village where they built new accommodation(搬到村庄的另一边,在那里建了新的住处)”可知,这些房子被忽视多年,房主们放弃了这些有数百年历史的房子,并搬到了村庄的另一边,在那里他们建造了新的住所。
根据第三段中的“The brown-walled homes, made of mud bricks with palm-leave roofs, were turned into simple but elegant inns with wood furniture and handcrafts made using skills handed down from their ancestors.(这些褐色墙壁、泥砖和棕榈叶屋顶的房子被改造成简单而优雅的小旅馆,里面有木制家具和手工制品,这些都是用祖先传下来的技艺制作的。)”
根据第四段中的“At an altitude of more than 1,000 meters, the tiny village which is home to the Abri tribe is a charming collection of traditional houses located along dozens of small alleys overlooking lands bursting with banana plants and citrus (柑橘) and palm trees.(这个海拔1000多米的小村庄是Abri部落的家,是一个迷人的传统房屋集合,坐落在数十条小巷子里,俯瞰着长满香蕉树、柑橘树和棕榈树的土地。)”和“It is part of a region known as the Grand Canyon of Oman where tourists can hike the rock mountains and valleys, and explore the old ways of local people. (它是阿曼大峡谷地区的一部分,游客可以在这里徒步穿越岩石山脉和峡谷,探索当地人的古老习俗。)”可知,本段讲述了这个村子独特的地理位置,人们来到这里可以探索当地的习俗还可以听当地人讲述古老的传说,因此本段主要讲的是“这个村庄受欢迎的原因”,即The reasons for the popularity of the village,故选C。
27.C。 根据最后一段中的“I come here for a night or two every month seeking calm, relaxation and comfort(我每个月都会来这里一两个晚上,寻求平静、放松和安慰)”可知,她需要放松,由此可推断出她在城市里过着紧张的生活。
根据第二段“The study,co-authored by Jing Zhou, Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of Management and Psychology at Rice's Jones Graduate School of Business, is the first to systematically examine the effects of reward choice in a field experiment, which was conducted in the context of an organization-wide suggestion program.(这项研究由莱斯大学琼斯商学院玛丽·吉布斯·琼斯管理学和心理学教授周静合著,是第一个在实地实验中系统检查奖励选择效果的研究,该实验是在整个组织的建议计划背景下进行的。)” D. To examine the effects of different reward choices.
第三段中的“Instead of discovering one reward type that is particularly effective at promoting creativity, what is more effective is to provide the employees with the opportunity to choose from several reward types(更有效的做法是给员工提供从多种奖励类型中进行选择的机会,而不是发现一种对促进创造力特别有效的奖励类型)”与C项 It’s advisable to let employees choose their own favorite reward types.(让员工选择自己喜欢的激励方式很明智)相符合,故选C。
30.D。 根据第五段最后一句“But for less-creative employees, alternative rewards that benefit those in need might actually lower creativity and should be avoided.”可知。
31.A。 第一段第一句(一般总领下文)“To promote employees’ creativity, managers should consider offering a set of rewards for them to choose from(为了促进员工的创造力,管理者应该考虑提供一套奖励供他们选择)”及后文全都是在讨论与 choice of rewards相关的事宜。故选A。
32.A。 故选A。
33.D。根据第三段中的“Even though the web looks really random...understand all these structural details(尽管网络看起来很随机,但实际上有很多内部结构,你可以想象它们,也可以观察它们,但人类的想象力或人脑很难理解所有这些结构细节)”可知,蜘蛛网的结构复杂,人类难以理解其构造。
34.B。根据最后一段中的“Spiders are able to build their...development of advanced new 3D printing techniques.”
    36.A. 故选A。
40.C。根据下文“Well-maintained daycare centers contribute a great deal to the overall development of a child by providing a structured environment.(维护良好的日托中心为孩子的全面发展做出了巨大贡献,提供了一个结构化的环境。)”
    42.A。 crash into“撞到……上”;pull into“驶入……后停下”;settle into“安顿下来,习惯于……”;fall into“可以分为……”。这里意为“车撞到了树上”。
    43.B。然后车开始冒烟。一个路人大喊:“车要爆炸了,快出来!”release vt.“释放”;rise vi. “升起来”;cast“投射(光、影子等);扔掷;抛”;slide vt.“(使)滑行,滑动”;vi. “快捷而悄声地移动”。
    44.D。speed up“加速”;run out“用完”;wear out“磨损,耗尽”;blow up“爆炸”。
    45.B。free...from.. “使……解放;使……摆脱”。
    46.C。run for life“逃命”。
    49.C。throw open sth.“(突然)打开某物”。
    52.C。Norwood
53.C。pump: move sth. quickly up and down or in and out“上下(或内外)快速摇动;急速摇晃”。
    54.D。前文提到了“She breathed into her friend’s mouth”,可知,进行心肺复苏同时做人工呼吸。

Sunshine Sports have been winning great popularity among all the teachers and students in the past few weeks, which are done in the two intervals in the morning and in the afternoon.
As is known to all, both teachers and students are suffering from physical and mental health problems by sitting long before the desks. Sunshine Sports, which include Baduanjin, playing volleyball or basketball, Tai Chi and jogging, are bringing sunshine to everyone as the name says.
We all applaud the activities because they build us up. Also, doing sports together strengthens teamwork and promotes communication.

We took the board down off the wall and placed it on the table. With heads down, both kids dared not speak, wondering what punishments would land on them. After what seemed hours, Laura broke the ice, “I'm sorry, Mom and Dad, but I really can't stand it, I mean, David's smelly socks and dirty clothes and…” David cut in angrily, “Huh, who else would leave paints and crayons everywhere? What a torture to clean your room!” It seemed that another war would start. I stopped them, asking tentatively, “Could we make a change of the board?” “Approval!” they yelled, eyes sparkling with interest. After discussion, we agreed to erase the words from the board but left “Hug and make up”.
In the same spirit, we ended up making boards with other themes. Examples: Keep silent for five minutes; Look in the mirror and smile; Send a handmade gift… Soon around the edge of the board appeared a dozen appropriate results. We put the board back onto the kitchen wall. In the later months, we changed those words for the better and fresher. Miraculously, with fights and tears getting fewer, our house was filled with hugs and laughter. Action speaks louder or words do wonders? Who knows?

    Text 1
W: Are you going to New York for business or pleasure?
M: Well, basically I'm going on holiday. How about you?
W: Actually, I'm going to Rio de Janeiro. New York is just a stopover. I'm going to take another plane from there.
    Text 2
W: Do you want to go jet skiing today? The weather is perfect for it.
M: I would rather relax on the beach today, Candy. I am still tired from horseback riding yesterday.
W: Jet skiing is even more fun than horseback riding! Come on!
M: Oh, all right. Let's go.
    Text 3
W: Good morning, I have an appointment with Mr. Davies at 11 o'clock.
M: Yes, he left a message for you saying he's terribly sorry but he's stuck in traffic. Please take a seat and he'll be here as soon as possible.
    Text 4
W: Why did you come to the meeting late? I left a message with your roommate about the time change.
M: He has a very short memory and it really gets on my nerves (令人不安) sometimes.
    Text 5
M: Oh, look at all the mess! What happened here?
W: We threw a party last night. It was very late when it was over and I didn't clean it.
M: Then when will you clean it?
    W: Right away.
    Text 6
W: So, what are you going to do for your birthday?
M: Well, I was hoping to have a party but most of my friends are too busy. Instead of going out for a meal with my parents, I've accepted my sister's offer to take me to a film.
W: Have you finished all this term's work? Dr. Smith required us to hand it in before this Wednesday.
M: Yes. Last week I thought I would have to spend my birthday sitting at the computer, but luckily I've finished all my work now.
    Text 7
M: Did you watch the game between Barcelona and Madrid last night?
W: No, I went to a party. What's the result?
    M: The score was 3:3.
W: Really? I thought Barcelona was going to win. They are a much better team than Madrid.
M: If Barcelona had played as they normally do, they would have won.
    W: What happened?
M: Their goalkeeper got injured after the first goal, but he kept on playing anyway.
W: That explains it. It's a pity I missed it. How many more games are left this season?
M: Four. The next game starts in a few weeks. Do you want to come over and watch the next game at my place?
I'm planning on having a few people over to watch it together.
W: Sure, that would be great.
    Text 8
M: Mum, can I play outside?
W: Well, Sam, it's snowing heavily, so you can't go outside in such cold weather.
M: Then I've got nothing to do.
W: What I don't understand is why you haven't got more hobbies—your friends seem to have lots of different things they like doing, don't they?
M: Yes, they like doing things inside, you know, collecting stamps, or playing computer games. I'm just not crazy about that kind of boring things.
W: Well, I do understand that. Actually, these days, I find the computer games quite interesting. How about table tennis? You can play that indoors. And you are great at that, aren't you?
M: Oh Mum, I used to be, but now I'm completely out of practice. I'd lose to anyone.
W: So maybe you should go and get some practice.
    Text 9
W: How was your economics class?
M: Well, to be honest with you, I fell asleep during the lecture.
    W: Was it that boring?
M: No, it wasn't the teacher's fault. The problem is that I can't stay awake for a two-hour lecture. I have been working in the evening at the hospital.
W: Isn't that going to affect your grades?
M: Probably. But I need to work to pay my school fees.
W: Maybe you should turn to the financial aid office.
M: But they are going to try to offer me a bunch of loans. I am trying to avoid going into debt.
W: OK. Why don't you go to the student employment office and see if they can help you find another job?
M: That's a great idea. I actually have a break before my next class, so I'll go there now.
    Text 10
W: This is the 6 o'clock news for Tuesday 25 November. And first the headlines:
The government has promised to help the poor farmers in the northern part of the country who haven't seen rain for nearly two years. And in Sydney a group of school children are successfully rescued from a plane which landed in the sea shortly after take-off. Transport workers are on strike in Melbourne asking for a pay raise. And the strike may spread to other states.
Now let's focus on the school children. They were travelling in a plane from Sydney to Queensland to take part in a musical concert. They found themselves swimming for the shore when their plane had to land in the sea just three minutes after taking off from Sydney Airport. The pilot managed to bring the aircraft and its 50 passengers down safely in the calm waters of Botany Bay where boats were able to come to the rescue of the children. It was a weekend, and there were hundreds of boats in the bay enjoying the good weather. This undoubtedly helped the rescue operation. The children said they owed their lives to the skill of the pilot. But the pilot replied modestly that it was all part of a day's work. However, all their musical instruments were lost and they never got to play at their concert.
