What Makes You Want More and More?
The Diderot effect, which states obtaining something new often creates a series of consumption which leads you to acquire more new things, is perhaps one of the strangest aspects of buyer behaviour, namely the ___41___ to consume more and more. As a result, we end up buying things that our previous selves never needed to feel happy or fulfilled.
The effect was first described in Diderot’s essay “Regrets on Parting with My Old Dressing Gown.” He tells how the gift of a beautiful red gown results in unexpected results, ___42___ plunging him into debt. Initially pleased with the gift, Diderot came to regret his new gown. Compared with his new dressing gown, the rest of his ___43___ began to seem cheap. He replaced his old straw chair, for example, with an armchair ___44___ in leather. “I was absolute master of my old dressing gown,” Diderot writes, “but I have become a ___45___ to my new one ...”
This effect today refers to excessive consumerism. Oftentimes people feel the need to be ___46___ with goods that match in terms of value. Advertising, media and social environment often push us to buy things that we have not considered buying at all. This consumer buying behaviour is pretty common. Having bought an expensive sofa in the living room, a person starts to ___47___ that the rest of his furniture looks rather old-fashioned compared to the new furnishings.
Simply being aware of this ___48___ will probably go a long way toward preventing it. Still, writer Joshua Becker has a few other suggestions.
Analyse and predict the full ___49___ of future purchases. A store may have a great sale on a new outfit — but if the new outfit makes you feel a need to buy a new pair of shoes or handbag to match it, it becomes a more expensive purchase. Stop trying to impress others with your stuff and start trying to impress them with your life. Remind yourself that possessions do not ___50___ you. Abundance of life is not found in the things that you own.

Coffee is increasingly earning scientists’ approval. Studies continue to suggest that the beverage(饮料) may have some ____51____ effects on health.
In the latest analysis, published in the BMJ, researchers scanned nearly 220 studies on coffee and found that____52____, coffee drinkers may enjoy more health benefits than people who don’t drink the brew.
Scientists learned that people who drank coffee were 17% less likely to die early during the study period from any____53____, 19% less likely to die of heart disease and 18% less likely to develop cancer, compared to people who did not drink coffee. Research group found that the strongest benefit ____54____ among people who drank around three cups of coffee a day.
Other studies have tried to figure out which ingredients in coffee ____55____ to its health benefits. Those might include its antioxidants(抗氧化剂), which can combat cancer, and anti-inflammatory(抗炎的) compounds, which can reduce the ____56____ of chronic(慢性的) diseases such as heart conditions and even nerve disorders like Alzheimer’s, ____57____ that of liver diseases.
____58____ research results support moderate coffee drinking as a relatively healthy habit, some experts say the findings don’t go far enough to ____59____ the changes of their coffee-drinking habits in the hopes of improving their health. The study did not confirm, for example, that people who do not ____60____ drink coffee should start adding a cup or two a day in order to lower health risk. The ____61____ also do not support the idea that current coffee drinkers should drink even more coffee to enhance whatever benefits they might be receiving. Too much coffee, the survey suggested, starts to bend the benefit curve back down.
The only negative health effects the review found were ____62____ women, who were at slightly higher risk of developing cracks in the bones if they drank more coffee. Pregnant women who drank more coffee ____63____ have higher rates of miscarriage, more premature births and more babies born with low birthweight than women who drank less coffee, the study found.
The findings should be reassuring for coffee drinkers, as long as they drink____64____. Further studies will hopefully look deeper into the type and ____65____ of coffee that brings the most health benefit.

(A)
When most people go to the famous amusement parks in Orlando, Florida, they miss some of the natural wonders the State has to offer. It was in Citrus County on the beautiful west coast of Florida that we went to see the manatee (海牛), which occupies coastal waters and rivers.
Our days started early in the morning at Homosassa Springs. We boarded a boat with Captain Traci Wood from Native Vacations. Having spotted two manatees just below the water, Captain Traci stopped the boat as they slowly swam toward us. They used their tails to drive themselves, steering with their flippers(脚蹼), gracefully moving their bodies through the water in our direction. Our boat was soon surrounded by other members of this gentle species.
Soon we continued our journey. Within a few minutes Captain Traci stopped the boat again and we were given instructions. Whatever you do, she said, remember the three golden rules: minimize splash (拍水) noise; act with very slow movements; and when you touch one of these friendly, gentle grey giants on the back or stomach, never touch with more than one hand at a time. The Endangered Species Act forbids touching a manatee unless it touches you first, and they will let you know. The protection of this endangered species is taken very seriously. But this won't affect the experience in the least. Most Homosassa manatees are very social and will come to you.
Manatees feed strictly on plants, and they eat a great variety of species, including hyacinth and water lettuce. They're very big, measuring 3 to 5 metres and weighing as much as 1,600 kilos. Despite this, they look very cute. Manatees are of course wild creatures, although when face to face with them, you're unlikely to feel any fear.
From December to March, groups of manatees escape the cold winter ocean and bathe in the warm waters near power plants and coastal springs that stay about 23 degrees year-round. Divers and swimmers come to Florida from all over the world for a chance to swim or interact with the manatee in its natural environment, rich in marine vegetation. This rich source of food makes this area an ideal place for the manatees. So the manatees arrive every year by the hundreds to find warmth, nourishment(营养) and maybe, just maybe, to visit us, the curious humans.
66. According to Captain Traci, those who swim with manatees mustn't________.
A. be under the age of twelve B. make any noise to annoy them
C. swim so slowly as to be caught by them D. touch them with both hands at the same time
67. What can be learned about manatees from the passage?
A. They live on other sea animals. B. They are not dangerous to humans.
C. They remain curious about humans. D. They are among the biggest sea animals.
68. Why do manatees come to Florida every year?
A. To stay away from the cold weather. B. To interact with human beings.
C. To give birth to their babies. D. To clean their bodies.

Public health emergencies are a fact of life in a world as interconnected as ours. In just the past five years we have witnessed unexpected outbreaks of fatal diseases — Ebola, chikungunya, yellow fever and Zika — each of which has spread far beyond its historical geographical range. No one can say what the next large-scale emergency will be, whom it will affect or when it will strike, but we do know that it is inevitable. Yet the U.S. is unprepared to meet this threat because it does not set aside money to beat back an outbreak before it can spread.
The U.S. used to have a national public health emergency fund, first created in the 1980s, but its balance has since decreased to $57,000 — enough to buy a few thousand first aid kits but not much else. What we need is more on the order of several hundred million to $1 billion in new funding that is always and immediately available and is refilled whenever it becomes drained.
An organization is already in place to deal with natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is pre-authorized(预授权) to set aside hundreds of millions of dollars to pay for debris (残骸,碎片) removal, for example, when state or local budgets become stressed by a weather emergency.
Creating a similar “rainy day” fund — and providing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with permission to use it in advance, without needing to go to the Congress could save lives and money, both at home and overseas. The idea behind an emergency fund is not to displace efforts to fight infectious disease but to increase them to meet an urgent temporary need. During an outbreak, the CDC can call on many doctors and nurses to work without pay, but the costs of transportation, medical supplies and protective equipment still have to be covered. The increase in patients typically increases the need for laboratory testing — extra requirements that can be met by short-term contracts with commercial companies.
72. According to the author, what does today’s interconnectedness lead to?
A. Fatal diseases spread farther than they used to. B. Better preparations are made to fight diseases.
C. There are more disease outbreaks than before. D. We can predict when the next emergency will strike.
73. What does the author imply about the U.S.’s national public health emergency fund?
A. It was created too late. B. It has worked well before.
C. It can’t meet today’s needs. D. It can’t deal with natural disease.
74. Which statement about a “rainy day” fund is the author most likely to agree with?
A. The fund can save more lives at home than abroad during an emergency.
B. Efforts to fight fatal diseases have been displaced due to the misuse of the fund.
C. Most infectious diseases could have been prevented if the fund had been in place.
D. CDC can decide how to use the fund for emergencies without further permission.
75. What is the passage mainly about?
A. What can be achieved with a pre-weather emergency fund.
B. Why it is almost impossible to avoid future disease outbreaks.
C. Why it is especially important to fight infectious diseases now.
D. What can be done to minimize the danger of disease outbreaks.
Section C (8分 每题2分)
Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences given below. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. For example, you can go on a cycling holiday.
B. However, not everything about British transport is as it used to be fifty years ago.
C. Nevertheless, there is one road in London, where you have to drive on the right!
D. And even though we invented the railways, our train network is not in a terribly good state.
E. If you want something a bit safer and less energetic, go on a narrow boat.
F. To sum up, Britain is a country that puts traditional and modern elements together.
Getting Around Britain
In Britain, we still calculate distances in miles and we still drive on the left. Many of Britain’s roads follow ancient Roman roads and you have to pay at some old roll(收费)bridges dating back hundreds of years. In London, we still have red double-decker buses and black London taxis. Before they can work, London taxi drivers still have to spend about 18 months learning all about the streets of London to get ‘the knowledge’.
______76______There are now more than 25 million cars on our roads so traffic jams are common on Britain's motorways, like the M25 around London. ______77______ You get delays caused by unpredictable events such as ‘leaves on the lines’ in autumn. To improve the situation in transport, the government is investing a lot of money in the railways and coming out with ‘new’ ideas like toll motorways and congestion charges in major cities like London.
Despite all of this, there are some fantastic ways of getting around the country and enjoying yourself at the same time.
______78______ Britain has thousands of miles of quiet country lanes and forest tracks which are ideal for keen cyclists. There are even more footpaths for walking holidays from one end of the country to the other, like Offa’s Dyke Footpath on the lovely borders of England and Wales. For more adventures, there are plenty of places for horse riding and canoeing as well as hang-gliding, paragliding and ballooning.
______79______ Britain has a great network of canals, a lot of them going through spectacular countryside. Another relaxed option is to go on one of Britain's many steam railways like the Seven Valley Railway or the Snowdown Railway which goes up the highest mountain in Wales. Just sit back and enjoy it!

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Comic Relief is an organization which raises money for charities in the UK and Africa. It started in 1985 and began by raising money for people living in extreme poverty in Ethiopia at that time. After a few years, as it got bigger, it started raising money for many more poor communities. Since it started, Comic Relief has raised over £800 million to help people in over 70 countries around the world. ”
So, how does Comic Relief raise so much money? The charity works to raise money every day of the year, but their most important day is Red Nose Day. It was first started in 1988, and since then, Red Nose Day has become a unique day in the British calendar. It happens every two years and it's a day when ordinary people and celebrities get together to make money. As the name suggests, everyone wears a plastic red nose as they raise money in schools, at work, at home--anywhere! On television for several hours during the evenings celebrities and comedians entertain people at the same time as asking them to donate money.
The slogan for Red Nose Day is 'do something funny for money’. Not all the things people do are funny, however. Sometimes they’re quite difficult一like running 43 marathons in 51 days. But whatever they do, the British people certainly seem to like raising money in this funny way—Red Nose Day in 2011 raised over £108 million!
11. How much money has Comic Relief raised since it started?
12. What can be learned from the passage about Red Nose Day?
13. What is the passage mainly about?

Felix Baumgartner, a 43-year-old Austrian, floated for two hours in a purpose-built capsule pulled by an enormous balloon before leaping into the record books from 39 kilometers above the earth. During the fall, he travelled at an average speed of 1357.64 kilometres per hour.
He broke the current free fall record of 31.3 kilometers held by Joe Kittinger. Mr. Kittinger, who set his record in 1960, was the only person allowed to communicate with Mr. Baumgartner while he was inside the capsule which carried him into space.
As the launch began, Mr. Kittinger told Mr. Baumgartner: ‘You are doing great, Felix. Doing great. Everything looks green and you are on your way to space.’
While the action took place in the city of Roswell, famous for space-related incidents, attention was worldwide, with millions watching it online.
Besides, Baumgartner set another world record during the attempt. It came after two hours and two minutes when he broke the record for the highest manned balloon flight, breaking the record of Malcolm Ross and Victor Prather, who flew to 34.668 meters in 1961. Their record ended in tragedy when Prather drowned in the Gulf of Mexico upon landing.
14. What did Mr. Kittinger mean by "everything looks green”?
15. How high did Malcolm Ross and Victor Prather fly in 1961?
16. What is the passage mainly about?
Questions 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.
W: So Tom ... we’ve got these emails from three people here ... and we need to decide which one is best... What do you think?
M: Yes ... well... let's see. Fabio sounds like a nice person—he's easy going and he likes people. That's a good start.
W: True ... and he is earning money, ... but he's been living with his aunt for three years and before that, I suppose he was living with his parents. It sounds like he might not be very good at doing the housework and things ... •
M: Hmm ... you could be right ... Well,... Anicka says she can cook, and sounds quite reliable... but four to eight hours of piano practice! That could become annoying!
W: Oh, I don’t know! I think it might be nice... she’s been playing since she was three, so I’m sure she’s really good...
M: Well... let’s see ... what about Liam?
W: Liam ... hmm ... well, it’s hard to tell, I think ... I mean he sounds hard-working and everything, and would probably share the housework, as he says ... but I don’t think he would be very easy to share with ... and the flat would be full of computers!
N: Yes, but ...it could be good to have someone to fix our computers! And also, if he keeps himself to himself, well ... that’s quite good, too …
W: Oh, no ... I’d like someone a bit more sociable ... like Fabio ...
M: OK ... well, let's think then. Not Anicka ... I’m not sure I could stand the piano ...
W: OK ... if that's how you feel ...Fabio or Liam then? ... I think Fabio ...
M: But, as you said, he might not be very good at housework and things …
W: Well, I think that's OK ... I’d prefer someone sociable ... and I don’t really want the flat full of computers ...
M: OK, then... Let’s go with Fabio ... but we'll have to make some rules about cooking and cleaning.
17. What are the two speakers talking about?
18. What does the man think of Anicka?
19. What does the woman think of Liam?
