Booking flights can be really exciting, but the prices might shock you into not booking your dream vacation. Never fear! We've offered some best tips for finding the cheapest airfares.
◆ Be Flexible with Your Travel Dates and Times
Airline ticket prices vary greatly depending on the day of the week and time of the year. In general, Fridays and Sundays are the most desirable days, so tickets will be pricier. Prices are cheaper if you fly after a major holiday. Airlines know when a festival, holiday, or school break is coming up — and they raise prices accordingly. Be flexible with your dates and times, and you'll save yourself some major money.
◆ Use Multiple Flight Platforms
Checking between the different platforms can often provide you with better insights into flight combinations and prices — for the same exact flights. Different platforms have different advantages and features, so play around with them all. You'll quickly determine the one(s) you like best!
◆ Check for a Student Discount
As a student, you might be in luck. Some airlines, say, SAS (Scandinavian Airlines), have a student ticket which means that for up to one week before departure, students pay the cheapest fare. Normal travelers at that time have to pay a much higher price, but a SAS Youth Ticket may be only one quarter the price of a normal ticket.
◆ Keep an Eye for Special Deals
Before looking for specific flights, make sure you've signed up for some newsletters. Joining the mailing list for airlines will give you access to the absolute best deals. More often than not, cheap flights are only available for a limited window (usually 24 hours). Keeping your eye on the deals will ensure you don't miss an amazing opportunity.
1. When might the airfares be the cheapest?
A. The last day of Christmas Holiday. B. The middle day of Christmas Holiday.
C. The Friday before Christmas Holiday. D. The Wednesday after Christmas Holiday.
2. Why is joining the mailing list for airlines advised according to the text?
A. To make travel time flexible. B. To get access to special deals.
C. To check for a student discount. D. To take advantage of different platforms.
3. In which section of a travel website can we read this text?
A. Book your trip. B. Design your route.
C. Customize your tour. D. Research your destination.

He's been enclosed in a massive block of ice for three days and three nights, been buried alive for a week, lived in a glass box for 44 days with nothing but water, and spent one week inside a water - filled sphere — all in the name of entertainment. In less than three decades, David Blaine has transformed the world of magic.
Blaine started out as a street performer and gained instant popularity due to his exciting tricks and unique magic style. His success prompted him to make a tape of his performance, which he sent to a TV network. Soon after, the television network aired his self - produced special, David Blaine: Street Magic, and its sequel (续集), David Blaine: Magic Man. In these programs, Blaine was shown traveling across the country and entertaining unsuspecting pedestrians. Unlike other magic shows where the focus was mainly on the magician, Blaine's show focused on the audience's reactions. This forever changed the way magic was portrayed on television. The New York Times said that Blaine had “taken a craft that's been around for hundreds of years and done something unique and fresh with it.”
In 1999, Blaine was ready to face new challenges. It was time for him to explore his lifelong interest in endurance (耐力). In April, he performed the first of a series of stunts (特技表演) that could finally lead to him challenging a world record. Blaine says, “As a magician, I try to create images that make people stop and think. I also try to challenge myself to do things that doctors say are not possible.”
Although he mentions future plans, Blaine hasn't revealed his next big project. However, one thing is certain — Blaine will continue to set high goals for himself and to push himself to do incredible, impossible things for the astonishment of audiences around the world.
4. Why has Blaine given so many endurance performances?
A. To pursue fame. B. To entertain audiences.
C. To change magic. D. To do scientific experiments.
5. What may be the main focus for the camera in Blaine's self - produced specials?
A. The surroundings. B. His talk with viewers.
C. The faces of the audience. D. His hands and expressions.
6. Which of the following best describes David Blaine?
A. Ambitious and optimistic. B. Creative and self - challenging.
C. Adventurous and sensible. D. Humorous and strong - willed.
7. What might be a suitable title for the text?
A. Magic Man B. Magic Transformation
C. Real or Magic D. Challenge and Success

[1] The first Chinese characters date from the late Shang Dynasty, some 3, 000 years ago, originally made for the purposes of divination (占卜). They were written on pieces of tortoiseshell and fragments of bone.
[2] During the Shang Dynasty, divination was very important. To those who knew how to read them, it was belief that exhibits of shell and bone could foretell the future, tell you when to sacrifice, when to harvest, and when illness would strike. So, it was these diviners seeking to unlock the future that accidentally provided us with a key to the past. These oracle bones (甲骨) offer us a precious glimpse of life in China some three thousand years ago.
[3] Of the four thousand characters used in these descriptions, so far 1500 have been deciphered. Through them, we can reconstruct a day in the life of a Shang Dynasty man.
[4] It was that by a combination of careful observation and incredible imagination, the people of the Shang dynasty turned what they saw, did, and felt into symbols that could be written on turtle shells and animal bones — the very first Chinese characters.
[5] In pictograph characters like “Tian”, meaning farm, simple lines were used to outline the shape of something. But more abstract concepts could be described, too. For example, a short horizontal stroke above a long one meant “above”, a short stroke below a long one meant “below”. By combining more than one character into one, even more complex ideas could be expressed. Take Jio, meaning wine, for example, a combination of the character for cup or container and water. Other characters would combine one character indicating a certain sound with another specifying meaning. Yang, for example, meaning wander.
[6] Thanks to the Chinese characters on the oracle bones, Chinese civilization could at last be recorded and passed down the generations. Strange as it may seem, the complex system of writing we use today began life thousands of years ago as scratches on bits of bone. Now they're rooted in hearts and minds of more than a billion people.
8. What were the first Chinese characters initially used for?
A. Serving the rulers. B. Recording the past. C. Showing natural power. D. Unlocking the future.
9. What does the underlined word mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Identified. B. Destroyed. C. Discovered. D. Simplified.
10. What does Paragraph 5 focus on about the first Chinese characters?
A. The evolution. B. The formation. C. The connection. D. The meaning.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce oracle bone script. B. To stress the value of Chinese characters.
C. To highlight the birth of Chinese culture. D. To offer a glimpse of life in Shang Dynasty.
D
Being highly connected to a strong social network has its benefits. Now a new study is showing the same goes for trees, thanks to their underground neighbors. The study is the first to show that the growth of adult trees is linked to their participation in fungal networks living in the forest soil. Though past research has focused on young trees, these findings give new insight into the significance of fungal networks to older trees — which are more environmentally beneficial for functions like capturing carbon.
“Large trees make up the main part of the forest, so they drive what the forest is doing,” said researcher Joseph Birch, who led the study. When they live in the forest soil, fungal networks act as a sort of highway, allowing water, nutrients and compounds to flow back and forth among the trees. The network also helps nutrients flow to resource - limited trees like family units that support one another in times of stress.
Cores taken from 350 Douglas firs (花旗松) showed that annual tree ring growth was related to the extent of fungal connections a tree had with other trees. They had much higher growth than those that had only a few connections. The research also showed that trees with more connections to many unique fungi had much greater growth than those with only one or two connections. “If you have this network that is helping trees grow faster, that helps capture more carbon year after year. These networks may help trees grow more steadily even as conditions become more stressful, and could even help protect them against death.” said Birch.
Birch hopes his findings lead to further studies in different kinds of forests in other geographical areas, because it's likely that the connections among trees change from year to year. He said, “Knowing whether fungal networks are operating the same way in other tree species could factor into how we reforest areas after harvesting them, and it could inform how we want to plant trees to preserve these networks.”
12. In what way do the new findings differ from the previous ones?
A. They confirm the benefits of fungal networks. B. They demonstrate a new way to capture carbon.
C. They clarify misunderstanding of fungal networks. D. They reveal the value of fungal networks to adult trees.
13. How do fungal networks help trees?
A. By fighting against diseases. B. By bettering forest soil conditions.
C. By acting as the center of family units. D. By maintaining the balance of resources.
14. What does the underlined “They” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A. Tree rings. B. Fungal networks. C. Douglas firs. D. Cores from Douglas firs.
15. Which field will most benefit from the study according to the text?
A. Geography. B. Agriculture. C. Reforestation. D. Microbiology.

When it comes to debates over the Mona Lisa, most people tend to fall into conversation over whether the subject is pretending a smile. 16 — whether the painting shows an image of a woman who has eyebrows (眉毛), as her forehead seems strangely free of follicles (毛囊).
The answer? Perhaps. But not anymore. 17 . It was most stylish for women in l6th - century Italy to pull out or shave their eyebrows. It's within reason that Lisa Gherardini, who is the suspected model for the painting, may have been lacking in eyebrows for that reason.
In 2007, a French photographer and engineer named Pascal Cotte cast doubt on that idea. Using an advanced camera capable of capturing images of high quality, Cotte claimed he was able to visualize a faint eyebrow hair on her face. 18 .
If Cotte's observation is correct, why only one hair? It's possible, Cotte said, that Da Vinci painted a glaze (釉) over most of the piece and then added further detail on top of it. 19 . The restoration work applied to the painting over time may have accidentally erased her follicular features. Based on his analysis, Cotte visualized other layers of the painting. Da Vinci moved the two left fingers of his subject and had originally made her smile wider, according to the photographer.
Cotte's photos allow observers to make their own judgment about whether Mona Lisa's eyebrows were pulled out. 20
A. A more careful analysis might raise another argument
B. No one will deny it's Leonardo Da Vinci's symbolic artwork
C. Perhaps Da Vinci had indeed intended to paint his subject with eyebrows
D. In painting the work, Da Vinci was likely to be recognizing the fashion trends
E. That may have created a situation where the topmost layer was easily damaged
F. It's another element that may make the painting appealing for another 500 years
G. It can clearly be seen that cracks (裂缝) around the eye have slightly disappeared

I Survived Quicksand (流沙)
It was February 16, 2019, at 8 a. m. when my friend, Jessica, and I arrived at Utah's Zion National Park. We'd traveled from our home in Mesa, Arizona, well - prepared to hike the nine - mile - long Subway Trail (about 15 kilometers), so named because of its shocking tunnel - shaped canyon. Halfway through our walk, which included climbing over rocks and fording (涉过) streams, the sunshine gave way to a light snow. Soon after, we reached the rust - colored walls of the Subway Trail. A small pond stood in our way, with the trail continuing on the other side. Because the pond looked shallow, we began to ford, with Jessica leading the way.
About five feet from the edge, her front foot sank into the sandy bottom. Then she fell forward and both legs started to sink. I moved cautiously close to her, grabbed her under the shoulders, and pulled her out. She climbed back to the shore, tired but relieved. But now I was sinking. The sand came all the way up to my right hip and left calf (腿肚). I freed my left leg but couldn't move my right leg at all. Jessica handed me a long stick we d picked up earlier in the hike. I jammed it down the side of my leg and tried to pull it out. Nothing. I was stuck in quicksand.
Jessica started removing sand with both hands, but it was refilling faster than she could pull it out. “Don't bother,” I told her. “You're just wasting your energy.” While I was no longer sinking, I wasn't getting out, either. We were shocked to find there was no cellphone signal because the only cell reception was back at the start, five hours away over rough terrain. I told Jessica she had to hike back and call for help. She was scared — she had only ever hiked with me and was scared of hiking alone on a trail the National Park Service calls “very tough.” But we were out of choices.
Paragraph 1: Thirty minutes after Jessica left, it started to snow heavily. _____________________________________
Paragraph 2: After what seemed a life - long time, a light shone across my eyes. ______________________________
