Scientists at the University of Vermont, Tufts University, and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University have discovered an entirely new form of biological reproduction and applied their discovery to create the first-ever, self-replicating（自我复制 的）living robots.
Named Xenobots after the African clawed frog from which scientists take their stem cells, the ma- chines are less than 0. 04 inches wide-small enough to travel inside human bodies. They can walk and swim, survive for weeks without food, and work together in groups. They even have regenerative capabilities; when the scientists sliced into one robot, it healed by itself and kept moving.
The Xenobots could potentially be used toward a host of tasks. Xenobots could be used to clean up radioactive waste and collect microplastics in the oceans. Some Xepobots had holes in their center, which could potentially be used to transport drugs or medicines. “Traditional robots degrade（降解）over time and can produce harmful ecological and health side effects, " researchers said in the study, which was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. As biological machines, Xenobots are more environmentally friendly and safer for human health. Aside from these immediate practical tasks, Xenobots could also help researchers to learn more about cell biology-opening the doors to future advancement in human health and longevity.
While the prospect of self-replicating biotechnology could spark concern, the researchers said that the living machines were entirely contained in a lab and easily destroyed, as they are biodegradable and regulated by experts. “There are many things that are possible if we take advantage of this kind of plasticity （可塑性）and ability of cells to solve problems, ＂ said Joshua Bongard, one of the lead researchers at the University of Vermont.

Sea life near Turkey is being threatened by a layer of brown foam on the ocean's surface.
The actual name for the foam is mucilage （黏液）. Scientists first noticed and described mucilage in 2007, when it was found near Turkey. Then, it was also found in other parts of the Aegean Sea, near Greece.
This year's outbreak of mucilage is the worst ever recorded. It's been developing for seven months and is now covering large parts of the Sea of Marmara. The Sea of Marmara is an “inland sea”, surrounded by land belonging to Turkey, and connected to the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea.
There are many different kinds of algae （海藻）, and it’s natural and normal for algae to grow in the ocean or in other bodies of water. But when there is lots of food for the algae, and other conditions are just right, there can be “an algae bloom ” which results in algae growing quickly and in huge numbers. And in very bad situations, mucilage is the result.
There are two main causes for the present outbreak of mucilage. One is the heavy pollution sewage, fertilizers, and other chemicals-flowing into the Sea of Marmara. The second cause is higher water temperatures because of climate change.
The mucilage causes problems in lots of different ways. For one thing, by covering the ocean's sur- face, it stops sunlight from reaching all the sea life below. “This mucilage is now covering the sea surface like a tent canvas, " says Muharrem Balci, who teaches biology at Istanbul University. Because there is so much algae, it takes up lots of oxygen from the seawater. That means that there's very little oxygen left for the other sea creatures that depend on it. The BBC reports that divers in the area are seeing large numbers of dying fish. After a while, the mucilage falls to the bottom of the ocean, where it covers the sea floor threatening to poison creatures that live there, like crabs and mussels. This year, the mucilage has been found as deep as 30 meters below the surface.

W:Hi.Not so good. I'm getting really annoyed with my little brother Jim at the moment. I'm trying to review for my exams and he keeps stopping me from working. Sometimes he listens to music late at night with his radio on loudly; sometimes he borrows something from me that I need to use for studying, like my dictionary or computer. I can't concentrate on my work for more than a few minutes. It's terrible.
M:You should ask your parents to deal with your brother. Your exams are more important. Your parents should understand that.
W:That's a good idea, Matthew. I'll ask my dad for help tonight. My brother will listen to him. And I'll also think about going to the library at the weekend. It's nice to have a change sometimes when you're studying. How's your review going, Matthew?
M:My problem is I just can't remember anything from History. I read a page and then ten minutes later I've forgotten it.
W:That's not unusual. You should try writing down what you've just read. It's amazing how much more you will remember that way. Sometimes I even sing my notes. It's a bit embarrassing, but it
will help to remember lots of information.

Now I will tell you something about our trip. Our trip begins with bus riding and then take the cross- channel boat to Paris. We will arrive at the hotel in the evening. The Ibis is a hotel with an excellent quality. It has a bar and a restaurant and is located about two miles south of Notre Dame, enabling you to expiries with ease. Tomorrow, after breakfast, we will take you on a sightseeing tour of the city, during which you will see the Eiffel Tower, Champs Elysees, the Louvre, in fact almost every famous landmark you have ever heard of. We then leave Paris and take a short drive to the magnificent Palace of Versailles, the home of Louis XIV. Our tour ends in the mid-afternoon back in Paris where you will have the rest of the day at your leisure. In the evening there is a “Paris By Night" tour showing you the beautiful build- ings with bright lights on, which will impress you deeply for sure.
