Like so many, may journey as an artist started at a very young age. I can see now as my youngest
child is in his second year of primary school just how early it must have been within me. There are
so many similarities; he is always so meticulous(一丝不苟的) about his work and integrating
some kind of drawing. I remember doing this as a child, spending hours on a drawing for no other
reason than being buried in the art. As a child, I remember being drawn by the smell and feel of a
fresh packet of pencils. My creative nature stayed with me during school but not overly so and as I
was becoming an adult I remember being told that I needed to “find something that I loved to do”
when deciding on the next step. From there I became a graphic designer and shifted to web design
back in the day when it was a very specialized field.
Naturally I was spending lots of time on the Internet, so it was there I looked and came across an
online forum of artists and within that I got to know a group of coloured pencil artists who had
posted tutorial online of how to work with pencils. I took one look at a few of those well-known
artists works and it was there that my love affair with pencil began.
After a year or so I decided that I wanted to connect with other American coloured pencil artists. I
decided to put my web skills to the task and built a website sharing my coloured pencils findings.
With that came the American Coloured Penciled Network(ACPN). I am proud of the achievement
and have made some excellent online American pencil friends. Involvement has dwindled slightly
2 / 13
the past year with the arrival of other social media websites but I am still passionate about making
coloured pencil art grow into its next phase.
4. What sort of girl was the author in her early years of primary school?
A. cool B. outgoing C. curious D. industrious
5. What made the author fascinated with the coloured pencil art?
A. Her creative nature
B. Works of famous artists
C. A fashionable web design D. An online forum of pencils
6. Why did the author create the ACPN?
A. To show off her achievement.
B. To compete with other websites.
C. To find a likeminded artist friend. D. To display her remarkable web skills.
7. What does the underlined word “dwindled” mean in the last paragraph?
A. decline B. started C. increased D. combined
C
For several decades, there has been an organized campaign intended to produce distrust in
science, funded by those whose interests are threatened by the findings of modern science. In
response, scientists have tended to stress the success of science. After all, scientists have been right
about most things, from the structure of the universe to the relativity of time and space.
Stressing successes isn’t wrong, but for many people it’s not persuasive. An alternative answer
to the question “Why trust science?” is that scientists use the so-called scientific method. But what
is called the scientific method isn’t what scientists actually do. Science is dynamic: new methods get
invented; old ones get abandoned; and at any particular point, scientists can be found doing many
different things. False theories sometimes lead to true results, so even if an experiment works, it
doesn’t prove that the theory it was designed to test is true.
If there is no specific scientific method, then what is the basis for trust in science? The answer
is the methods by which those claims are evaluated. A scientific claim is never accepted as true until
it has gone through a long process of examination by fellow scientists. Scientists draft the initial
version of a paper and then send it to colleagues for suggestions. Until this point, scientific feedback
is typically fairly friendly. But the next step is different: the revised paper is submitted to a scientific
journal, where things get a whole lot tougher. Editors deliberately send scientific papers to people
who are not friends or colleagues of the authors, and the job of the reviewer is to find errors or other
3 / 13
faults. We call this process “peer review” because the reviewers are scientific peers—experts in the
same field—but they act in the role of a superior who has both the right and the responsibility to find
fault. It is only after the reviewers and the editor are satisfied that any problems have been fixed that
the paper will be printed in the journal and enters the body of “science.”
Some people argue that we should not trust science because scientists are “always changing
their minds.” While examples of truly settled science being overturned are far fewer than is
sometimes claimed, they do exist. But the beauty of this scientific process is that science produces
both creativity and stability. New observations, ideas, explanations and attempts to combine
competing claims introduce creativity; transformative questioning leads to collective decisions and
the stability of scientific knowledge. Scientists do change their minds in the face of new evidence,
but this is a strength of science, not a weakness.
8. Scientists stress the success of science in order to ________.
A. promote basic knowledge of science
B. remind people of scientific achievements
C. remove possible doubts about science D. show their attitude towards the campaign
9. What can we learn about the so-called scientific method?
A. It’s an easy job to prove its existence. B. It usually agrees with scientists’ ideas.
C. It hardly gets mixed with false theories. D. It constantly changes and progresses.
10. What can we learn about “peer” review?
A. It seldom gives negative evaluation of a paper.
B. It is usually conducted by unfriendly experts.
C. It aims to perfect the paper to be published.
D. It happens at the beginning of the evaluation process.
11. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph implies that ________.
A. it is not uncommon for science to be overturned
B. scientists are very strong in changing their minds
C. people lose faith in those changeable scientists
D. changes bring creativity and stability to science
D
By now you’ve probably heard about the “you’re not special” speech, when English teacher
David McCullough told graduating seniors at Wellesley High School: “Do not get the idea you’re
4 / 13
anything special, because you’re not.” Mothers and fathers present at the ceremony — and a whole
lot of other parents across the Internet — took issue with McCullough’s ego-puncturing words. But
lost in the uproar was something we really should be taking to heart: our young people actually have
no idea whether they’re particularly talented or accomplished or not. In our eagerness to elevate
their self-esteem, we forgot to teach them how to realistically assess their own abilities, a crucial
requirement for getting better at anything from math to music to sports. In fact, it’s not just
privileged high-school students: we all tend to view ourselves as above average.
Such inflated self-judgments have been found in study after study, and it’s often exactly when
we’re least competent at a given task that we rate our performance most generously. In a 2006 study
published in the journal Medical Education, for example, medical students who scored the lowest on
an essay test were the most charitable in their self-evaluations, while high-scoring students judged
themselves much more stringently. Poor students, the authors note, “lack insight” into their own
inadequacy. Why should this be? Another study, led by Cornell University psychologist David
Dunning, offers an enlightening explanation. People who are incompetent, he writes with coauthor
Justin Kruger, suffer from a “dual burden”: they’re not good at what they do, and their very
ineptness prevents them from recognizing how bad they are.
In Dunning and Kruger’s study, subjects scoring at the bottom of the heap on tests of logic,
grammar and humor “extremely overestimated” their talents. Although their test scores put them in
th
nd
the 12 percentile, they guessed they were in the 62 . What these individuals lacked (in addition to
clear logic, proper grammar and a sense of humor) was “metacognitive skill”: the capacity to
monitor how well they’re performing. In the absence of that capacity, the subjects arrived at an
overly hopeful view of their own abilities. There’s a paradox here, the authors note: “The skills that
engender(引起) competence in a particular domain are often the very same skills necessary to
evaluate competence in that domain.” In other words, to get better at judging how well we’re doing
at an activity, we have to get better at the activity itself.
There are a couple of ways out of this double bind. First, we can learn to make honest
comparisons with others. Train yourself to recognize excellence, even when you yourself don’t
possess it, and compare what you can do against what truly excellent individuals are able to
accomplish. Second, seek out feedback that is frequent, accurate and specific. Find a critic who will
tell you not only how poorly you’re doing, but just what it is that you’re doing wrong. As Dunning
5 / 13
and Kruger note, success indicates to us that everything went right, but failure is more ambiguous:
any number of things could have gone wrong. Use this external feedback to figure out exactly where
and when you screwed up.
If we adopt these strategies — and most importantly, teach them to our children — they won’t
need parents, or a commencement(毕业典礼) speaker, to tell them that they’re special. They’ll
already know that they are, or have a plan to get that way.
12. Which can be the best title of this passage?
A. Special or Not? Teach Kids To Figure It Out
B. Let's Admit That We Are Not That Special
C. Tips On Making Ourselves More Special
D. Tell The Truth: Kids Overestimate their Talents
13. The author thinks the real problem is that ______.
A. we don't know whether our young people are talented or not
B. young people don't know how to assess their abilities realistically
C. no requirement is set up for young people to get better
D. we always tend to consider ourselves to be privileged
14. Which is NOT mentioned about poor students according to the passage?
A. They usually give themselves high scores in self-evaluations.
B. They tend to be unable to know exactly how bad they are.
C. They are intelligently inadequate in tests and exams.
D. They lack the capacity to monitor how well they are performing.
15. The strategies of becoming special suggest that ______.
A. we need internal honesty with ourselves and external honesty from others
B. the best way to get better is to carefully study past success and failure
C. through comparison with others, one will know where and when he fails
D. neither parents nor a commencement speaker can tell whether one is special

The Flynn Effect
The Flynn effect, first described in the 1980s by researcher James Flynn refers to the finding
6 / 13
that scores on IQ tests have increased in the past century. One research paper, published by
psychologist Lisa Trahan and her colleagues, combined the results of other published studies and
found that IQ scores have indeed increase since 1950s.____16___ Trahan and her colleagues
observed, “The existence of the Flynn effect is rarely disputed.”
______17____ One explanation has to do with improvements in health and nutrition. For
example, the past century has seen a decrease in smoking and alcohol use in pregnancy,
improvements in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, and improvements in
nutrition. As Scott Barry Kaufman writes for Psychology Today, “The Flynn effect serves as a
reminder that when we give people more opportunities to prosper, more people do prosper(成功).
_______18____ In a TED talk, Flynn explains that the world today is “a world where we’ve
had to develop new mental habits, new habits of mind.” Flynn has found that IQ scores have
increased the most rapidly on questions that ask us to find similarities between different things,
and more abstract types of problem-solving, both of which are things that we need to do in the
modern world.
Several ideas have been brought up to explain why modern society might lead to higher
scores on IQ tests. For example, today, many more of us have demanding, intellectually rigorous
jobs. Schools have also changed: whereas a test at school in the early 1900s might have been more
focused on memorization, a recent test might be more likely to focus on explaining reasons for
something.
_____19______ Family sizes tend to be smaller, and it has been suggested that this may
allow children to pick up on new vocabulary words while interacting with their parents. I’ve even
been suggested that the entertainment we consume is more complex today. _____20______
Therefore, both the education we receive and the society we live in shape our IQ in a way
that we cannot imagine.
A. In other words, there is a lot about IQ that we may not know yet.
B. Another explanation for the Flynn effect has to do with social changes.
C. Researchers have put forward several theories to explain the Flynn effect.
D. Trying to understand and anticipate plot points may actually be making us smarter.
E. Although there have been exceptions, IQ scores have generally increased over time.
F. Additionally, more people today are likely to finish high school and go on to college.
7 / 13
G. The Flynn effect shows that human mind is more adaptable than we might have thought.

DRUMMING WITH GRANDPA
Roger was filled with excitement as his mother told him his grandfather was on his way over.
He always had fun together with his grandfather who once drummed in a band. They could make the
whole house shake with their joyful music. Roger got excited and practiced drumming all morning.
Finally, Dad's car pulled up in front of the house. Upon hearing the car door opened. Roger
shouted for joy from his bedroom window, "Hi, Grandpa! Listen to this!” Taking a deep breath, he
raised his drumsticks and began rocking and rolling, just like Grandpa had taught him. Jumping up,
he raced outside to his grandfather and asked, "Grandpa. What do you think? Are you ready to drum
together?" Grandpa, giving Roger a hug, said. "It was wonderful, but I'm afraid I can't play right
now.” Dad smiled at Roger, telling him some of Grandpa's finger joints were hurting him and that
maybe he would want to play after a short rest. Roger didn't ask again.
After lunch, Roger went to his room to get his skateboard, finding someone had already
stepped into the room. It was Grandpa who stood near the drum set. He picked up a drumstick and
began to play. Thump! Thump! But just with two thumps, the drumstick fell onto the floor. Grandpa
reached for it, trying to pick it up, but the drumstick fell out of his hand. He tried again and the same
thing happened. Grandpa moved his red and swollen fingers, looking upset. Seeing this, Roger shut
the door noiselessly. He walked to the sitting room where Dad was reading and asked Dad to drive
him to his friend's house. "David has a drum with the pedal(踏板)and I'd like to borrow it," Roger
told Dad about his plan. Dad got the car keys and off they went.

(一)任务型写作
Dear fellow students, as everybody can see, some resources are being wasted in our school.
The lights are on during the day in some classrooms. Water taps are left running after washing. In
the canteen, some students threw away the food just because they don’t like it.
I think it is high time that we should stop wasting and live a low-carbon life because many
people go hungry and energy crisis is getting worse in the world. So , I make the following
suggestions: first , let’s turn off the lights and the water taps when we don’t use them. Second, it
would be better if we eat up the food we buy. Last but not least , it is suggested that we should
form the habit of recycling waste.
Fellow students, if we take action now, we can make a big difference to the whole world.

“Grandpa, a surprise!”Roger shouted when they returned with a big box. Roger led Grandpa
to his room in delight. Dad followed, carrying the big box. With great joy Roger opened the box
together with Dad. When Grandpa saw the drum with the pedal, his eyes were shining with
excitement. “Grandpa, you can play this drum with your foot,” Roger said and then pressed the
pedal with his foot. The drumstick swung forward. Thump! Thump! Thump! The pedal worked
smoothly and the thumps filled the whole room. “Would you like to have a try?" Roger turned to

Grandpa with his eyes full of expectation.
Slowly, Grandpa reached out his foot and pushed the pedal as Roger did. Thump! Thump!
Grandpa smiled and continued with greater enthusiasm. “Join in, Roger!” Grandpa shouted to
Roger excitedly and his cheerful voice was even louder than the drum rolls. Roger grinned from
ear to ear as he picked up his drumsticks. He rocked and rolled, and so did Grandpa. With the
drums beating merrily, their joyful music shook the whole house like before, not only the whole
house, but also the hearts of the grandfather and the grandson.
