七选五Reading is essential but how can one choose the right books to read and where can one find them? A few famous people may give you some helpful tips. ● Read books from past eras.___1___ Otherwise, you’d be “completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of your times,” just as Albert Einstein put it. “Somebody who reads only newspapers and books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who dislikes eyeglasses,” he said. ___2___ Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep the teachings from leaving a lasting impression on you. Seneca the Younger, a first-century Roman philosopher, suggested that “you must linger (流连) among a limited number of master thinkers, and digest their works, if you would obtain ideas which shall win firm hold in your mind.”● Shop at secondhand bookstores. Virginia Woolf believed the works in secondhand bookstores have an attraction which the usual volumes of the library lack. Browsing through these books gives you the chance to run into something that wouldn’t have risen to the attention of librarians and booksellers. ___3___ ● Check out authors’ reading lists. In his 1940 guide How to Read a Book, American philosopher Mortimer J. Adler talked about how to choose books. He attached importance to those that other authors consider worth reading. ___4___ Mortimer wrote that “one way to understand them is to read the books they read.”● Make the final decision by yourself. ___5___ It’s you yourself who should choose what, how and when to read. Theodore Roosevelt recommended choosing books on subjects that interest you and letting your mood guide you to your next great read.AInterest is the best teacher.BGreat authors are great readers.CLeave some room for older works.DLearn more about those great authors.EDon’t jump too quickly from book to book.FThere’s no “best books” list that everyone should follow.GUsually they are much more selective in organizing their collections.Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. ____6____ But since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas. Climate change can cause extreme events like wildfires and floods. ____7____ How does climate change make you feel? The news of melting glaciers and oil spills may seem overwhelming and can make you feel angry, frightened, hopeless or upset. This is called climate anxiety. ____8____ If you feel worried about what’s happening to the world, good for you. It’s normal to be upset when things you care about are getting hurt.____9____ There are lots of things you can do to help adults take better care of the world. Turn your fear into power by doing something. Breaking the problem into bite-sized chunks is a good way to start. Think of something you feel passionate about, such as protecting ocean life or saving forests, and join a community group or charity that supports that cause. Local charities like Plastic Free Coast organize beach cleans, and the Rainforest Team has lots of planet-saving ideas, such as reducing food waste.Positive action can inspire others too. Sisters Kim and Stella King from the charity Fights Against Plastic have picked up 90,000 pieces of plastic. They ask schools, businesses and organizations to follow their lead. ____10____ .AWhy is there climate anxiety?BAnd it is a normal, healthy response.CThis risks the lives of humans, animals and plants.DRemember, it’s important to get support from people around.ENo one can fix climate change on their own but we can all play a part.FThese shifts may be natural, such as through variations in the solar cycle.GSo, tell friends and family what you’re up to and encourage them to join in.In 2013, digital media consultant Baratunde Thurston launched an experiment. He decided to disconnect from his online life for twenty-five days: no Facebook, no Twitter, not even e-mail. He needed the break. ____11____ It didn’t take him long to adjust to a disconnected life. By the end of that first week, he was less stressed about not knowing new things. ____12____ He enjoyed food without Twittering the experience. But the end came too soon. After the twenty-five days. he had to restore his online presence. His experiment summarizes two important points about our relationship with social networks like Facebook and Twitter. The first point is that we increasingly recognize that these tools fragment (碎裂) our time and reduce our ability to concentrate. ____13____ But the problem is especially serious if you’re attempting to improve your ability to work deeply. To fight back against these distractions, Thurston felt his only option was to quit the Internet altogether. But the problem is that no one is meant to actually follow Thurston’s lead. ____14____ That is to accept our current distracted state as unavoidable. This brings me to the second point summarized by Thurston’s story: it didn’t take him long once the experiment ended to slide back into the fragmentedstate where he began. This rule proposes a third option: accepting that these tools might be vital to your success and happiness, but meanwhile accepting that most people should be using fewer such tools. I won’t ask you, in other words, to quit the Internet altogether like Thurston did. ____15____ There is a middle ground, and if you’re to develop a deep work habit, you must fight to get there.AHe struck up conversations with strangers.BIt is a real problem for many different people.C“I was burnt out, fried, and done,” he explained.DThis reality accounts for the remaining alternative.EHe had to return to the online world with books to market.FBut I’ll ask you to reject the state of highly distracted connectedness.GFortunately, you will break the habit of surfing the Internet gradually. The Ancient Chinese Game of GoWeiqi, known in English as Go, is one of the four skills that an ancient Chinese intellectual (知识分子) could possess. It has a history of well over 4, 000 years in China and remains popular. Culturally, this activity is really “more than just a game”.____16____ One of China’s classics, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, describes the famous general Guan Yu playing Go while receiving surgery on his arm.History books have recorded quite a number of ardent Go fans from each dynasty. Today, there are still many in China, Japan and South Korea. Wu Yulin, a professional, explains its attraction, “In Go, you can learn the dialectics (辩证法) and military stratagems. ____17____ There are numerous variations within the game and you can never reach the bottom of it.”____18____ Hua Yigang, Secretary General of the China Go Association, remarks on the character-building qualities of Go. “You have to become entirely calm, otherwise you can’t play it. You have to be very strong of mind. ____19____ You might make mistakes during a game, and then have to readjust your mentality in order to fight to the end.”In fact, all of our minds can benefit from playing Go, which officially has the capacity to make you smarter. Research has shown that children who play Go have the potential for greater intelligence. ____20____Today, the number of Go fans in China is at 36 million and rising. Some universities like Beijing University are even offering courses in Go to undergraduates.AThere’s always loss and gain.BIt’s a war between equal powers.CThat is because it motivates both the right and left sides of the brain.DYou can also cultivate your character and improve your intelligence.EBut more often, ancient Chinese played Go to cultivate their mind and character.FThe influence of Go on Chinese society is quite evident in literature works.GMany people also love this ancient game for the Chinese philosophy it contains. The 24 solar terms were created thousands of years ago in China to guide agricultural production. They also reflect China’s rich history through the seasonal festivals, special foods, cultural ceremonies, family gatherings and even healthy living tips that correspond with each solar term.____21____Rain Water signals the increase in rainfall and rise in temperature. With its arrival, lively spring-like scenery starts blossoming: the river water defreezes. wild geese move from south to north and trees and grass tum green again.____22____In northern China, the spring drought is common and the precipitation of this season accounts for only 10 to 15 percent of annual average rainfall. At this time of year, farmers begin to plough their fields. It’s the right time to prepare for spring sowing when the day gets warmer.____23____During Rain Water period, extra care is needed to deal with a returning cold spell and humidity, which is the amount of water in the air.____24____It is strongly advised not to take off the thick coats too early and to keep warm, especially the elderly and children. The wet and humid weather during Rain Water period is considered harmful for people’s spleen and stomach according to Chinese medical practice.____25____People in Beijing often eat porridge() cooked with a kind of Chinese herb medicine to resist cold and wet weather. Honey, dates and Chinese yam are also very good nourishment(营养) to put in the porridgeAWith Rain Water coming, insects become more active.BA bowl of nutritious porridge is the best choice to nourish the body.CTherefore, Rain Water is considered as a key period to water the fields.DAccording to an old Chinese saying, the rainfall in spring is as precious as oil.EThe temperature in most of the basin areas increases quickly during Rain WaterFOne of the 24 solar terms, which is very important in spring, is called Rain Water.GThe fast increase in air humidity due to rainfall can result in lower temperature and wet weather.SELF-STUDY TIPSHowever difficult you find it to arrange your time, it will pay off in the long run if you set aside a certain part of the day for studying—and stick to it. ____26____ But don’t forget to make sure that you have enough left for recreational activities or simply to be “with” yourself: reading a novel or watching a television programme. As part of your weekly schedule, it is also advisable to consider exactly what you have to do in that week, and make sure that you handle the most significant tasks first. ____27____On a physical level, make sure you have an area or space for studying. ____28____ If you always study in the same place, preferably a room of your own, you will find it easier to adjust mentally to the activity when you enter that area. You should have everything that you might need at hand.Make sure that all the physical equipment that you use, such as a desk, chair etc. is at good height for you. If you use a personal computer, there are plenty of guidelines available from the movement on angles, lighting and the like. ____29____If you are working on topic your teacher has set, but finding it hard to concentrate, it may be that you actually need to take your mind right off it for a period of time. ____30____ After a period away from the test, having not thought about it at all, you may return to it refreshed and full of ideas.ADon’t do it just anywhere.BIt is best to make a weekly schedule.CMake use of equipment that is available to you.D“Airing the mind” can work wonders sometimes.EConsult these and avoid the typical student aches and pains.FIt’s all too easy to read something and then forget where it came from.GIt’s wise to leave the easier or less urgent areas of your work until later. 下文“Otherwise, you’d be “completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of your times,” just as Albert Einstein put it.(否则,正如阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦所说,你将完全依赖于你所处时代的偏见和时尚)”可知,作者建议读者阅读过去的书籍。C“Leave some room for older works.(为旧作品留出一些空间。)” 根据下文“Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep the teachings from leaving a lasting impression on you.(在太短的时间内阅读太多种类的内容会使文章无法给您留下持久的印象。)” E“Don’t jump too quickly from book to book.(读完一本书后不要太快地去读另一本)”,与下文表述一致,能概括本段内容。 以及空前“Virginia Woolf believed the works in secondhand bookstores have an attraction which the usual volumes of the library lack. Browsing through these books gives you the chance to run into something that wouldn’t have risen to the attention of librarians and booksellers.(弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫认为,二手书店的作品具有图书馆通常所缺乏的吸引力。浏览这些书让你有机会看到一些不会引起图书管理员和书商注意的东西。)”可推知,作者建议读者去二手书店买书。G“Usually they are much more selective in organizing their collections. (通常,他们在组织藏品时更具选择性。)”承接上文,进一步说明了作者建议读者去二手书店买书的原因,符合语境,故选G项。4根据本段小标题“Check out authors’ reading lists.(查看作者的阅读清单)”和空前“He attached importance to those that of her authors consider worth reading.(他重视其他作者认为值得读的那些作品。)” B“Great authors are great readers.(好的作家也是好的读者)”,承接上文,符合语境,故选B项。5根据木段小标题“Make the final decision by yourself.(自己做最后的决定)”以及空后“It’s you yourself who should choose what, how and when to read.(阅读内容,阅读方式和阅读时间应由你自己选择)”可推知,想要读什么书,要读多长时间等细节都应该由自己决定。F“There’s no “best books” list that everyone should follow.(没有人人都应该遵循的最佳书籍清单)”也是在表达读者自由决定自己读什么书的内容,符合语境,故选F项。 6根据空前的“Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns.”(气候变化是指温度和天气模式的长期变化。) F选项“These shifts may be natural, such as through variations in the solar cycle.”(这些变化可能是自然的,比如太阳活动周期的变化。)中的these shifts与上文呼应,符合题意,故选F7根据空前“Climate change can cause extreme events like wildfires and floods.”(气候变化会导致野火和洪水等极端事件。) C选项“This risks the lives of humans, animals and plants.”(这将危及人类、动物和植物的生命。) 故选C8根据空前的“The news of melting glaciers and oil spills may seem overwhelming and can make you feel angry, frightened, hopeless or upset.”(冰川融化和石油泄漏的消息似乎势不可当,会让你感到愤怒、恐惧、绝望或不安。) 这种气候焦虑是正常的,与空后的“It’s normal to be upset when things you care about are getting hurt.”(当你在乎的东西受到伤害时,感到难过是很正常的。) 故选B9根据空后的“There are lots of things you can do to help adults take better care of the world.”(你可以做很多事情来帮助成年人更好地照顾这个世界。) E选项“No one can fix climate change on their own but we can all play a part.”(没有人能独自解决气候变化问题,但我们都可以发挥作用。)中的we can all play a part呼吁人们发挥作用,与下文对应。 可知,本段是积极影响其他人来保护地球,同时根据空前“Sisters Kim and Stella King from the charity Fights Against Plastic have picked up 90,000 pieces of plastic. They ask schools, businesses and organizations to follow their lead.”(反对塑料慈善机构的金和斯特拉·金姐妹已经捡到了9万件塑料。 讲述是Sisters Kim and Stella King在保护的地球过程中所做的事情,空后应该承接的内容要与本段段旨相符,即Sisters Kim and Stella King的积极行为如何影响其他人,G选项“So, tell friends and family what you’re up to and encourage them to join in.”(所以,告诉你的朋友和家人你在做什么,并鼓励他们加入。) 11根据上文“He decided to disconnect from his online life for twenty-five days: no Facebook, no Twitter, not even e-mail. He needed the break.(他决定在接下来的25天里远离网络生活:没有Facebook,没有Twitter,甚至连电子邮件都没有。他需要休息)”可知,Baratunde Thurston过没有网络的生活是为了休息,分析选项,C“‘我累坏了。他解释道。解释上文需要休息的原因,故选C项。12根据上文“By the end of that first week, he was less stressed about not knowing new things.(到第一周结束时,他对不了解新事物的压力减轻了)”及下文“He enjoyed food without Twittering the experience.(他享受美食,但没有在Twitter上分享自己的经历)”可知,此处是描述他没有网络后的生活,A他和陌生人攀谈起来。符合语境。故选A项。13上文“these tools fragment (碎裂) our time and reduce our ability to concentrate(这些工具分散了我们的时间,降低了我们集中精力的能力)”指出社交网络分散我们的时间、降低我们集中精力能力的问题,根据下文“But the problem is especially serious if you’re attempting to improve your ability to work deeply.(但如果你试图提高深入工作的能力,这个问题就特别严重了)”可知,B这对许多不同的人来说都是一个真正的问题。符合语境,B项中的problem呼应上下文的the problem。故选B项。14上文“To fight back against these distractions, Thurston felt his only option was to quit the Internet altogether. But the problem is that no one is meant to actually follow Thurston’s lead.(为了反击这些干扰,Thurston觉得他唯一的选择就是完全退出互联网。但问题是,没有人真的会跟随Thurston的脚步)”指出没有人能像Thurston那样完全离开网络,下文“That is to accept our current distracted state as unavoidable.(那就是接受我们当前分心的状态是不可避免的)”指出人们只能回归社交网络世界,所以D这一现实解释了剩下的选择。承上启下,讲明了下文的原因。故选D项。15根据上文“I won’t ask you, in other words, to quit the Internet altogether like Thurston did.(换句话说,我不会要求你,像Thurston那样,完全退出互联网)”及下文“There is a middle ground(有一个中间地带)”可知,作者不要求完全退出网络,但是建议不能过度使用网络,要找到中间地带,故F但我要你拒绝使你高度分心的连网状态符合语境,是一个使用互联网的中间地带。故选F项。16F17D18E19A20C【解析】【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了中国围棋有益于人的智力和性格培养,并且已被某些大学纳入必修课程。16根据下文“One of China’s classics, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, describes the famous general Guan Yu playing Go while receiving surgery on his arm. (这是因为它同时刺激左右脑)”符合题意,That指代上文提到的内容。故选C21F22D23C24G25B【解析】【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了24节气之一的雨水,以及雨水在春天的重要性。21根据上文“They also reflect China’s rich history through the seasonal festivals, special foods, cultural ceremonies, family gatherings and even healthy living tips that correspond with each solar term.(它们还反映了中国丰富的历史,通过季节性的节日,特殊的食物,文化仪式,家庭聚会,甚至健康的生活技巧,与每个节气相对应)以及第二段第一句“Rain Water signals the increase in rainfall and rise in temperature.(雨水预示着降雨量的增加和气温的上升)” F项:One of the 24 solar terms, which is very important in spring, is called Rain Water.(二十四节气之一,在春天非常重要,被称为雨水)承接上句,并且引出后文要介绍的二十四节气之一的雨水,承上启下。故选F22根据后句“In northern China, the spring drought is common and the precipitation of this season accounts for only 10 to 15 percent of annual average rainfall.(在中国北方,春旱很常见,这个季节的降水量只占年平均降水量的10%15%可知,春季北方是缺雨的,因此春雨非常珍贵。D项:According to an old Chinese saying, the rainfall in spring is as precious as oil.(中国有句古话,春雨贵如油)符合语境。故选D23根据上句“At this time of year, farmers begin to plough their fields. It’s the right time to prepare for spring sowing when the day gets warmer.(每年的这个时候,农民们开始犁地。天气转暖时,正是准备春播的好时机)可知,C项:Therefore, Rain Water is considered as a key period to water the fields.(因此,雨水被认为是灌溉农田的关键时期)和上句构成因果关系,说明雨水是人们准备春播灌溉农田的关键时期。故选C24根据后句“It is strongly advised not to take off the thick coats too early and to keep warm, especially the elderly and children.(强烈建议不要过早脱下厚外套,注意保暖,特别是老人和儿童)可知,G项:The fast increase in air humidity due to rainfall can result in lower temperature and wet weather.(降雨导致空气湿度迅速增加,导致气温下降,天气潮湿)是建议人们不要过早脱下厚外套,注意保暖的原因。故选G25根据后句“People in Beijing often eat porridge() cooked with a kind of Chinese herb medicine to resist cold and wet weather.(北京人经常吃一种中草药煮的粥,以抵御寒冷和潮湿的天气)可知,B项:A bowl of nutritious porridge is the best choice to nourish the body.(一碗营养粥是滋养身体的最佳选择)后句承接B项具体说明北京人经常吃的一种中草药煮的粥来抵御寒冷和潮湿的天气,话题一致。故选B26B27G28A29E30D【解析】【导语】这是一篇说明文。本文针对如何进行自我学习给出了一些建议。比如要确保有一个固定的学习空间;确保所有使用的设备,如桌子、椅子等处于良好的高度;如果使用电脑,也要注意角度、照明等。26根据上文“However difficult you find it to arrange your time, it will pay off in the long run if you set aside a certain part of the day for studying—and stick to it.(不管你觉得安排时间有多困难,如果你抽出一天中的一部分时间来学习,并坚持下去,从长远来看,这是值得的)”以及后文“As part of your weekly schedule(作为你每周计划的一部分)”可知,本句是在建议最好制定一周的日程表,B选项中a weekly schedule对应后文中weekly schedule。故B选项最好制定一个周计划符合语境,故选B27根据上文“As part of your weekly schedule, it is also advisable to consider exactly what you have to do in that week, and make sure that you handle the most significant tasks first.(作为你每周计划的一部分,也建议你仔细考虑一下这周你要做什么,并确保你先处理最重要的任务)”可知,上文提到确保先处理最重要的任务,可知把工作容易些的,不那么紧急的放在后面是明智的。故G选项把工作中比较容易或不那么紧急的部分留到以后再做是明智的符合语境,故选G28根据上文“On a physical level, make sure you have an area or space for studying.(在物质层面上,确保你有一个用于学习的区域或空间)”以及下文“If you always study in the same place, preferably a room of your own, you will find it easier to adjust mentally to the activity when you enter that area.(如果你总是在同一个地方学习,最好是一个你自己的房间,当你进入那个地方的时候,你会发现在心理上更容易适应学习活动)”可知,上文提到要确保有学习的区域或空间,即不要随便在什么地方学习,后文则说明了这一做法的好处。故A选项不要随便在什么地方学习符合语境,故选A29根据上文“Make sure that all the physical equipment that you use, such as a desk, chair etc. is at good height for you. If you use a personal computer, there are plenty of guidelines available from the movement on angles, lighting and the like.(确保你使用的所有物理设备,如桌子、椅子等都处于适合你的高度。如果你用的是个人电脑,有很多关于移动角度、光线等方面的指导)”可知,上文提到有许多关于设备的使用指导问题,本句为本段最后一句,说明这么做的好处:防止学生常见的疼痛和疾病。故E选项参考这些,防止学生常见的疼痛和疾病符合语境,故选E30根据上文“If you are working on topic your teacher has set, but finding it hard to concentrate, it may be that you actually need to take your mind right off it for a period of time.(如果你正专注于老师布置的题目,却发现很难集中注意力,那么你可能需要暂时把注意力从它上面移开)”以及后文“After a period away from the test, having not thought about it at all, you may return to it refreshed and full of ideas.(在离开测试一段时间后,在完全没有考虑过这个问题的情况下,你可能会重新回到测试中,并充满了想法)”可知,上文提到把注意力从题目上移开,后文则说再次回到测试中充满了想法,可见本句是在说明适当走神有时是很有用的,故D选项“‘放空头脑有时能创造奇迹符合语境,故选D
