Attentin, everybdy! Yu need t fcus! And, in fact, it shuldn’t be difficult. Sme peple say the average persn’s attentin span has declined t eight secnds—shrter than that f the gldfish. This, hwever, is nt supprted by science. Our ability t fcus is actually very cmplex. It can’t just be measured using time. And scientists say the ability f healthy peple t pay attentin hasn’t becme weaker. “There is n real evidence that it’s changed,” said Michael Psner, an American scientist.
Hwever, it has been widely reprted that ur attentin span has slipped. The claim came frm a reprt by Micrsft. In 2015, the American cmpany published a 52-page reprt. It said the average human attentin span had drpped frm 12 t eight secnds. The reprt als mentined the average attentin span f gldfish (nine secnds). “That means gldfish are better at fcusing than human beings,” it cncluded. The reprt has since been picked up hundreds f times. But scientists say the reprt is nt reliable. It is based n a 2008 study which fllwed nly 25 peple.
Edward Vgel is a scientist wh studies human attentin. Attentin span, he says, is a very cmplex idea. It includes at least three abilities. The first is abut the ability t fcus n smething fr a certain perid f time. The secnd describes the ability t avid distractin. The third is abut the ability t switch frm ne task t anther. Scientists use lts f tests t measure these abilities.
Yu prbably knw very well whether yu are gd at fcusing withut taking any tests. In fact, if yu’ve read this far, yur attentin span is certainly better than that f the gldfish!
