The sldier came dwn the stairs—tw at a time. ‘Captain, they’ve gne,’ he cried. ‘They’ve disappeared —all f them. The plain is …’ But the captain was n lnger listening. He was ging up the stairs —three at a time.Secnds later, the captain std n the high wall f the city f Try. He lked dwn at the empty plain and, beynd it, at the empty sea. ‘They’ve gne and we’ve wn,’ he said. ‘The Greeks have tried fr ten years t capture ur city. Nw they’ve sailed away. And they’ve taken everything with them.’

‘Nt everything, sir,’ the sldier said. ‘They’ve left their hrse.’ Outside the main gates f the city std a huge wden hrse.‘Ah, yes,’ the captain said, ‘that wden hrse. It’s s big that they culdn’t take it with them. Well, it’s urs nw. Get sme help and pull it int the city. That wn’t be difficult. It’s n wheels.’‘But why is it n wheels?’ the sldier asked. ‘I think that maybe the Greeks want us t …’The captain interrupted him. ‘Yu’re a sldier,’ he said. ‘Yu dn’t have t think. Yu have t bey rders, and I’m giving yu ne nw. Mve that hrse.’ S the Trjans dragged it int the city with rpes.
That night, in the main square, all the citizens f Try celebrated. They sang and danced arund the hrse, and made jkes abut their enemies, the stupid Greeks. Then the Trjans made sure all the gates f the city were securely lcked, and they all went t sleep, including the gate guards.
By midnight, the square was empty, except fr the giant hrse. The six Greek sldiers waited fr anther hur, t be sure. Then, very quietly, they pened the secret dr n the side f the hrse and climbed ut.
N guards stpped them as they pened the main gates. Outside std the Greek army. It had returned in the darkness when the citizens were celebrating inside.
Nw the army entered the city. The Greeks seized the captain. Fr ten years, they culd nt capture the cityby fighting, but in ne night, they succeeded in capturing it thrugh a trick.
