Daria was a successful photographer living in Russia’s capital city of Moscow when she decided to leave the busy city life behind — which is why she now lives in the woods with over 100 rescued animals.
As a child growing up in Russia, Daria had always dreamed of rescuing dogs and opening up her own dog shelter. Though she ended up working as an excellent wedding photographer in Moscow, she always felt a desire to leave everything behind in search of something more.
Daria’s first rescue was a one-eyed little dog from the local animal control. She soon started taking in more rescued animals, especially those that had special needs.
Her rescue efforts kept snowballing until one day when Daria finally decided to follow through on her dream and buy a country house in a forest 100 miles from Moscow.
Daria and her husband now use it to care for over 100 animals. In addition to rescuing dogs, she also saves animals from the fur farming industry.
Many people have contacted Daria and asked her to take in rescued and unwanted dogs, many of which either have behavioral special needs, or disabilities — but if they had not been taken in by the Russian couple, then they would most likely have been abandoned.
They now devote their entire lives to taking care of their rescued animals. They mostly spend their days making sure that all the dogs have been fed, giving the animals their medication, and keeping all of the living spaces clean and tidy.
Since the Russian couple mostly lives off the grid, they use solar panels for electricity and thanks to a little help from their friends, they also now have running water.
4. What do the underlined words in the fourth paragraph reflect?
A. Daria was saving more and more animals. B. Daria was interested in snow activities.
C. Daria was eager to feed some pets. D. Daria was tired of saving animals.
5. What word can best describe Daria?
A. Caring. B. Creative. C. Passive. D. Mean.
6. What does the last paragraph imply?
A. The couple lack money. B. The couple don’t like country life.
C. The couple’s friends offer no help to them. D. The couple’s living conditions are very hard.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. A photographer’s hard choice. B. Country life and city life.
C. A couple’s life of saving animals. D. Russia’s farming industry.

Hunting for aliens (外星人) might sound like science fiction. But it’s a serious science.
No aliens have been found yet. But it’s a big universe. Scientists have found thousands of planets orbiting other stars. And there may be billions of other worlds still to be discovered. Some may even have moons that can support life. Over the last 60 years, scientists have hunted only a tiny bit of it for interstellar (星际的) messages.
Some people think we’d have a better chance of meeting aliens if we introduce ourselves. In other words, send our own messages into space. But other scientists say this is a bad idea. We might not want to advertise our existence to unfriendly aliens.
There may also be aliens that aren’t able to send or read messages. Some planets may be home to simple, even tiny life forms. To find those worlds, scientists look for new worlds in the place suitable to live. This is the area around a star where a planet would be just warm enough to have liquid water. That’s important because water is essential for all known life.
A planet may not have to look just like Earth, though, to be a good home for aliens. Some hardy creatures on our own planet grow strong and tall in seemingly unlivable conditions. Some microbes (微生物) live on the deep seafloor. Learning about these microbes broadens our view of what places in the universe might be livable.
The question of whether we are alone in the universe has captured people’s imaginations for thousands of years. And the answer has two equally exciting possibilities. In outer space, either we are completely alone—or we are not.
8. What can be inferred from the second paragraph?
A. Aliens have been found up to now. B. The universe has a lot to be discovered.
C. There can’t be aliens on other planets. D. No messages have been received from outer space.
9. Why are some scientists against sending our messages into space?
A. It is hard to send messages into space. B. Aliens cannot receive the messages.
C. It may bring trouble to human beings. D. Aliens are not so smart as us humans.
10. Why does the author mention microbes in the fifth paragraph?
A. To show aliens might be easier to be found.
B. To illustrate microbes like living in the sea.
C. To explain why hardy creatures can grow stronger.
D. To show that life may exist in some poor conditions.
11. In which part of a magazine can you probably find the text?
A. Fashion. B. Health. C. Sports. D. Science.
【答案】8. B9. C10. D11. D

Study Tips and Techniques
If you find yourself struggling with your studies, here are some useful study tips and techniques that can help you out.
Self-study and research
It is a common wrong idea that self-study can begin only after a particular topic is taught in class. ____12____ After attending the classes, it is of great importance that you have time to review the notes that you have taken during the class as well as try and read more about the subject on your own.
____13____
Yes, one of the important habits that you must acquire to improve the studying process is to involve yourself in group discussions about the subjects that you are studying. Group discussions can be a great way to broaden your viewpoint over important problems since group discussions give every group member a chance to voice their understanding. Group discussions are thus a healthy and a rather informal way of exchanging information and discussing issues.
Regular Planning
____14____. According to your convenience, map out your daily/weekly/monthly study. It is always better to have a weekly or a daily arrangement, so that sudden changes in class schedules or any other changes can be taken into consideration accordingly.
Balanced study
Yes, there exist many students who burn the midnight oil. ____15____. Always plan a schedule that will not influence your sleep, your health, your sports/entertainment activities and other tasks.
Build the right attitude
Normally students get too caught up with the grades, the percentage and the entire marking system. Always remember that if you study with the aim of acquiring knowledge, the grades will be brighter. However, if you just aim for the high grades, there is a chance you might get the grades, but you will miss out on acquiring overall knowledge on a particular subject. ____16____.
A. Debates and Conversations.
B. Organized and overall notes.
C. You should start preparing for the class in advance.
D. Having a clear project makes it easier for a person to reach the goal.
E. Try and answer these questions yourself with the help of books or Internet.
F. The studying process should leave enough room for entertainment and relaxation.
G. Always study with the right point of view, and you will never have to worry about your grades.

Recently, I went to a hospital to visit a friend of mine. After I got there, I began to look for a parking spot. But it was not easy to find one. Finally, I managed to park my car near the entrance of the hospital. As I got out to pay for the parking fee, I noticed a man searching his pockets for some change. He searched everywhere but couldn’t find any. “Do you need any help?” I asked. “Yes. I left my house in a hurry and forgot to take any change with me,” he said in an embarrassed voice. I took out some change and handed it to him, saying, “Here, take it.” “Thank you so much,” he said gratefully while taking the change from me. I smiled and left. I loved helping others and didn’t think much about it.
Before returning home, I went to the grocery store first, because there was almost nothing left in the fridge. The store was a twenty-minute drive away from my house, so I wanted to buy food for at least two days. I took a shopping cart and started filling it. 【答案】One possible version:
I put the bags in the car and tried to start the car but failed. I tried over and over again, but still couldn’t get it started. I became a bit annoyed. My house was a bit far from the grocery store. I had to take a taxi if I couldn’t use my car. But since I had bought so many things, I didn’t want to carry my heavy bags here and there.
Just when I had no idea what to do, I heard someone knocking on my car window. I turned around and found it was the man to whom I had given some change earlier that day. He asked me if my car had broken down. I said yes and to my surprise, the man quickly found what was wrong with my car and fixed it. I decided to give him some money for his help, but he said he was just trying to thank me for what I had done for him. Feeling grateful to the man, I knew that kindness really pays off.
