First, fllw yur ears. While yu may ask “What des it mean?” as yu begin reading a pem, it is better t ask “Hw des it sund?” Even if its true meaning appears t be beynd yur grasp, yu can always say smething abut hw the pem sunds when yu read it alud.

Secnd, apprach the pem as if yu were an explrer in an unfamiliar landscape. Ask sme basic questins abut the pem. Wh is talking? Wh is being talked t? What is being described? Is there a sense f place? Are there ther peple r bjects there? As yu explre the pem, yu will begin t see images in yur mind.

As yu slwly explre yur surrundings, yu will start t dig up clues that give yu a greater understanding f the pem. Read these lines, pay attentin t the image f the caged bird and try t find ut what it means.

Third, if yu are still struggling t interpret the meaning f a pem even with much painstaking effrt, just have sme patience. Yu cannt really understand a pem that yu have nly read nce. Smetimes reading a pem can be a lifelng jb. S if yu d nt get it, set the pem aside and cme back t it later .
