    T bring the Olympic spirit t develping natins in the late 1990s, the Olympic Cmmittee allwed a small number f “wild card” athletes t jin the Games. But because they didn’t have t g thrugh any qualifying runds t cmpete, when they arrived, nt all f the cmpetitrs were prepared. One such athlete was a swimmer frm Equatrial Guinea named Eric Mussambani. When Mussambani arrived at the 2000 Sydney Games, he’d nly been training fr the 100-meter freestyle fr abut eight mnths. He’d als never been in an Olympic-size pl and had never raced mre than 50 meters. Regardless, he was determined t represent his cuntry.
    The three wild-card athletes were given their wn race, and Mussambani was next t the ther tw swimmers frm Niger and Tajikistan. When the fficial called the swimmers t begin the game, bth f Mussambani’s cmpetitrs were disqualified fr false starts. Left t swim by himself, Mussambani dve in and dg paddled, breathing fr air and mving his arms and legs. Halfway thrugh the race, the situatin lked s serius that the audience seriusly wrried he was drwning.
    When Mussambani finally passed the finish line and pulled himself frm the water, the applause thundered. His final time was 1: 52: 72—mre than twice that f swimmers in the previus race. But Mussambani culdn’t have been happier. He tld reprters, “I’ m ging t jump and dance all night lng in celebratin f my persnal success. ”
    Mussambani’s curage and determinatin made him an Olympic celebrity (名人). He kept training fr the 2004 Games and even gt his time dwn t a respectable 57 secnds.
