Passage1
(2022·山东德州·一模)阅读短文,根据题目要求完成各小题。
In the past, many students practiced English with their pen friends — they sent letters to people all around the world. However, we now send emails to others and chat with people who live quite far away on the Internet. Here’s some advice on how to communicate in English online.
▲ How to start a conversation when speaking English online.
When you speak to somebody online, start by asking “Yes or No” questions. Use questions such as “Do you like …?” or “Can you …?” or “Have you ever …?” Remember your goal. You are trying to learn about the other person. Think about things you enjoy and try to find some common ground between you. And share your own experiences to show that you have similar interests. If you only ask questions, you will sound like a policeman or a policewoman!
▲ How to keep a conversation going.
“Listen” carefully. In that way, you can get to know somebody well. When you know him or her well, you will have more to talk about. Then ask follow-up questions. After you “listen”, use what you “hear” to learn more about that person. Use “open ended” questions, such as “What do you think of …?” or “What was the most interesting experience ...?”
▲ Remember some basic rules for online language exchanges.
Be patient. Do not try to find a good friend right away.
Be careful. Don’t give any personal information on the Internet, especially your address, telephone number, and even your real name.

People in different countries speak different languages. But is there a language that can be understood by everyone in the world? Emojis might be the first truly universal (通用的)language.
Emojis are a kind of special language. Pictures are used to put meaning across. A group called the Unicode Consortium is in charge of choosing official emojis. (A) It has added new emojis every year since 2014. These new emojis do not come out of nowhere. (B)They show what people think about, like and care about.
Emojis can be used to represent (代表) different groups of people. In 2015, emoji faces with different skin tones(肤色) were added. In 2016, different jobs were added, such as doctor, police officer and painter along with female versions of these jobs. This year, emojis of disabled people were added including emojis of blind people and people in wheelchairs.
But there is also more to emojis. They can also refer to pop culture and new cultural trends.
New emojis in 2019 have included several animals, such as sloths (树懒) and flamingos (火烈鸟). These animals are not very common, but are known to many people. For example, sloths have become popular thanks to the 2016 film Zootopia. Many fashion designers have included flamingos in their designs in recent years. There are about 250 kinds of turtles. Most turtles live near fresh water. However, land turtles, also known as tortoises, do not swim at all. Sea turtles live nearly their whole lives in salt water.
Tortoises
Tortoises are slow. They have short, thick back legs. Their front legs are very good for digging. Many tortoises can pull their heads, legs, and tails inside their shells. They quickly do so at any sign of danger. Their strong shells can protect them. Unlike most other turtles, tortoises eat only plants. Tortoises hatch from eggs. The mother tortoise digs a hole, lays some eggs, and covers them with earth. When the baby tortoises hatch, they must dig their way out of the hole. The largest tortoises can grow to four feet long. They may weigh up to 600 pounds.
Sea Turtles
Like tortoises, sea turtles lay their eggs on land. The mother turtle comes out of the ocean onto the beach. She digs a hole, lays her eggs, and returns to the sea. When the baby turtles hatch, they head straight for the water. Sea turtles can swim very fast. They use their front legs like wings to “fly” through the water. Although most turtles can pull their heads and legs inside their shells, sea turtles cannot. The green sea turtle eats only plants. Other sea turtles eat both plants and animals. The largest of all sea turtles can weigh over 1,000 pounds.
Get to know different kinds of turtles and compare them.

Passage8
(2022·河北·威县第三中学一模)阅读短文,并按要求完各小题。
Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not true. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (消除代沟).
Don’t argue (争辩) with your parents.
Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go someplace to cool off. Find out and truly understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解).
Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values.
The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!
