    A

Teenagers who spend hours in front of the television may have a poorer diet as young adults.

A study, which involved nearly 1,400 high school students found those who watched TV for five hours or more every day had less healthy diets than other students five years later. Why does this happen? Should the parents take any measures?

On the one hand, people who spend a lot of time in front of the TV, especially teenagers, may snack (吃零食) more, and that may influence their longterm diet quality.

On the other hand, TV ads for fast food, sweets and snacks make teenagers eat more of those foods. TV time might also replace exercise time for some kids.

The researchers found a clear relationship between TV time during high school and diet quality of the young. While the heaviest TV viewers were eating the most junk food, those who'd watched fewer than two hours every day had the most fruits and vegetables.

As far as I am concerned, children should watch no more than two hours of television per day. And parents should set a good example by eating right, being physically active and curbing their own TV time.

1.According to the passage, heavy TV viewers are easy to         .

    A.eat more fruits

    B.eat fewer vegetables

    C.eat less junk food

D.eat more food high in calcium(钙)

由第五段“While the heaviest TV viewers were eating the most junk food, those who'd watched fewer than two hours every day had the most fruits, vegetables”.

2.The underlined word “curbing” in the last paragraph can be replaced by “        ”.

    A.adding    B.checking

    C.controlling D.stopping

由最后一段“And parents should set a good example by eating right, being physically active and curbing their own TV time.”

3.What suggestion does the author give the parents?

A.They must watch TV with their children.

B.They should stop the children from watching TV.

C.They should pay attention to nutrition in diets.

D.They can't do what they don't want their children to do.

由最后一段“As far as I am concerned, children should watch no more than two hours of television per day.And parents should set a good example by eating right, being physically active and curbing their own TV time.” 所以通过关键词“set a good example by eating right, being physically active and curbing their own TV time.”

    B

Sarah came running in.“Look what I found.” Over the top of the paper I was reading came a crispy long object that caused me to jump.It was a snake skin that had been shed by one of our many garden snakes.

“Isn't it beautiful?” said my wideeyed sevenyearold.

I stared at the organic wrapper and thought to myself that it really wasn't that beautiful, but I have learned never to appear uninterested with children. They see only good quality and excellence in the world until educated otherwise.

“Why does it do this?” Sarah asked.

“Snakes shed their skin because they need to renew themselves,” I explained.“Why do they need to renew themselves?” Sarah asked.

I suddenly remembered an article on this page many years ago where the writer was expressing her concept of renewal. She used layers of paper over a wall to describe how we hide our original selves, and said that by peeling away those layers one by one, we see the original beneath.“We often need to shed our skins and those coatings that we cover ourselves with,” I said to my now absorbed daughter.“We outgrow some things and find other ones unwanted or unnecessary. This snake no longer needs this skin.It is probably too crinkly(起皱的)for him, and he probably doesn't think he looks as smart in it as he once did.”

Sarah was getting the point. As we talked, I knew that she began to understand, although slightly, that renewal is part of progress; that we need to take a good look at ourselves, our rooms, schoolwork and creativity, and see what we need to keep and what we need to cast off.I was careful to point out that this is a natural consequence of their growth.

“I see, Dad,” said Sarah and jumped off my lap and ran off.

I hoped she would remember this. That often, in order to find our real selves underneath the layers of community and culture with which we cover ourselves year after year, we need to start examining these layers. We need to gently peel some away, as we recognize them to be worthless or unnecessary; or at best, store the ones thrown away as mementoes(念想)of our promotion to a better vitality or spirit.

4.At the first sight of the snake skin, the author was         .

    A.scared    B.puzzled

    C.uninterested D.excited

根据文中第一段“Over the top of the paper I was reading came a crispy long object that caused me to jump.” 故选A。]

5.Sarah learned from her father that renewal is         .

    A.to recover the layers inside

B.to review what has been done

C.a natural part of getting mature

D.the process of finding the unwanted

根据倒数第三段“Sarah was getting the point. As we talked, I knew that she began to understand, although slightly, that renewal is part of progress”以及“I was careful to point out that this is a natural consequence of their growth.”

6.It can be inferred from the passage that the author         .

A.dislikes the snake skin at all

B.shows concern for nature and culture

C.can grasp the chance to educate children

D.often encourages his daughter to raise questions

7.The author mainly tells the reader that         .

A.snakes cast off the layers to look smarter

B.we should renew ourselves to get improved

C.snakes shed their skins to renew themselves

D.we should explore our original nature underneath

A bicycle may be seen by most people as just another vehicle(交通工具), but for many Londoners, cycling is a way of life.According to an official UK government survey in 2017, about 570,000 bike journeys are made every day in London. In fact, almost half of the vehicles that pass over London Bridge each day are bikes.

London introduced a public bikesharing system in 2010.“There can be no doubt that our trusty bicycles have changed the way people get around our great city,” Johnson told The Guardian in 2015.

In London, bikes are used for more than just taking short trips to and from the subway. No matter where you want to go in the city, taking a bike is usually the quickest and easiest choice.

And it's not just shared bikes that the government is encouraging people to ride.In many companies across the UK, the UK government's Cycle to Work scheme(骑行倡议) allows employees to buy a brand new bike without having to pay any tax(税).This means that it's common to see many people cycling to and from work, and some employers even provide workplace showers and lockers(储物柜) for their workers.More importantly, a cyclefriendly boss may let you off for being late if you rode a bike to work.

Not only is it great for the environment and our body, cycling is also good for the mind.According to National Geographic Magazine,“Bike riding can improve people's happiness.”

We all need to eat.So, meals could be a chance to stop what we're doing and spend time with the people in our lives.A recent study from a team of South Korea suggests that eating together has many good effects on children and teenagers while frequently eating alone may lead to poor eating habits and poor food choices.People who eat alone more than twice a week have a greater risk of developing high blood pressure.

There are benefits of family dinners on children and teenagers.

In 2014, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) looked at data from nearly threequarters of the world's countries.Among its findings is the fact that students who share a main meal with their families are less likely to hate school.Children who eat a main meal with their families are also less likely to take drugs (毒品).

In the report, titled “The Importance of Family Dinners (VIII),”researchers say that teens who have frequent family dinners are more likely to say their parents know a lot about what's going on in their lives.

Another study from the University of Montreal finds that children who eat with their families experience longterm physical and mental health benefits. These children are physically in better shape and drink fewer sugary soft drinks. These children also seem to have better social skills and are less violent.

One of the researchers, Pagani, involved in this study is a professor at the university. She says that mealtimes with parents possibly provide young children with firsthand social events, which helps them have better communication skills.

As an old saying goes, “Friends are like wine, the older, the better.” Many people consider old friends to be more important than new ones. For example, if two pieces of advice 36.         (give) to solve a problem, one from a new friend and the other from 37.         old friend, people would prefer the 38.         one to the former one, even though the new friend's advice may be better.

I, however, 39.         (agree) with the old saying, believing that new friends are not necessarily 40.         (bad) than old friends. It is not always right 41.         (determine) your friendship by the length(长度) of time.

Once you call someone a friend, he must be a person who is 42.         (rely) and whose interests are in common with 43.         (you). It is mainly his character (性格) and interests 44.         make him your friend. It actually has little to do with time.People's appearance may change, but their character usually stays the same. Therefore, on this point, there is no 45.         (different) between old friends and new friends.

    Dear Ben,

I'm sorry that you're having trouble learning Chinese. It is no easy job and I have heard a lot about the difficulties in Chinese learning, so you are not alone. Here are some tips you may find helpful.

It would be a good idea if you could find as many chances as possible to talk with local people. It is a great way to push you to speak Chinese as well as practice your listening skills.Equally important is reading more.Go to the bookstore and find some Chinese storybooks suitable for you and set a time to read every day.

It takes time to learn a language.Be patient and you'll make progress.

    Yours,

    Li Hua

Have you ever had to overcome an extreme challenge in your life?

My teenage years had been insane. From schoolwork to athletics, I had always been running around.Everything was so difficult.

Throughout my hectic teenage years I have been faced with many extreme challenges that have required extreme focus and hard work to overcome. If it hadn't been for hard work, none of these challenges that I faced would have been conquered.

Two years ago, when I was a freshman in high school, I dealt with an extremely significant injury. This took place in my tennis tournament in January. In the climax of my match, I jolted my back to the left and soon after felt a sharp, painful shock run through my spine.I knew at that difficult moment I seriously injured my back.I was rushed off the court and my parents made an appointment with an orthopedist (矫形外科医生) for the next morning.

I walked into the office extremely nervous and suffering from excruciating pain.My tennis season for school started in three months and I absolutely needed to build up the strength.

After about twenty minutes of waiting in the office, which felt like an eternity, the doctor walked in to examine my Xrays. With a sorrowful face, the doctor looked into mine and my mother's eyes and said, “There is a 50/50 chance that Lucas will be able to participate in this years tennis season.Lucas broke his L5 vertebrae in his lower back.”My heart dropped and I felt a sadness come over me.The doctor said that I would be sitting out of physical activity for two and a half to three months.

Those three months were the longest three months of my life.I was so eager to get back to practices for the season.Every day, I would think about how it was going to be when I was fully healthy.I asked myself, “Am I going to be out of shape? Should I even play this year? I probably won't have a successful season.”

From that dreadful day on, I decided that I was going to put in the work to be back in top form and have a successful season.

    Paragraph 1:

After I got the “all clear” from my orthopedist I was going to get to work.

    Paragraph 2:

My hard work proved to be very effective.

    Paragraph 1:

After I got the “all clear” from my orthopedist I was going to get to work.Practices were going to start in two weeks and I was determined to get back on the court. My hunger for success made me play and work out for two hours every day before the season.Through practices, I would hit the gym and try to build up the strength that I had before the injury.

    Paragraph 2:

My hard work proved to be very effective.I had the most successful season of my career.I made it to the finals.Although I truly wanted to win, I knew that it was a great accomplishment for me to be in that position even not in the first place. The injury was almost a good thing because I proved to myself that I am capable of achieving goals that I strive for, through hard work of course. That season was by far the most rewarding season of my career.I felt so accomplished at the end of the season.Hard work always pays off.
