I walk thrugh the drs int the waiting area, where there’s a familiar atmsphere f bredm and tensin. Peple sit uncmfrtably n plastic chairs, lking thrugh ld magazines, all f which have been read hundreds f times previusly. Anxius parents d what they can t cmfrt nervus and crying children. 2 In the middle f this particular scene I spt a small girl whse ankle is twice its nrmal size. I speak with the n-duty nurse, wh tells me that Lara’s parents rushed her t the hspital after she fell ff her bicycle. Since getting here, Lara has spent her time crying in pain. Althugh it’s the dctrs and nurses wh will treat her injury, it’s my jb t make her feel better.
3 Scientific studies shw that laughter prduces chemicals t make peple feel better, which means clwn dctrs can be helpful. We are specially trained clwns wh wrk as part f a prgramme knwn as “hspital clwning”. I chse this career because f my experience f ging t hspital when I was a kid. Althugh the dctrs and nurses did a great jb, hspitals weren’t really designed fr children. I spent much f the time when I was there feeling frightened and mre than little bred! Being a clwn dctr means I can help peple by entertaining them.

4 Visiting hspitals and ther health care facilities, we clwn dctrs wrk tgether with medical prfessinals. On a typical day, we spend ur time cheering up patients, their families, and mre ften than nt, the hspital staff, t! We d this by ding magic tricks, singing sngs, telling stries and, f curse, telling silly jkes. Sme children, thugh, dn’t feel like laughing, especially if they’re in pain. We have t be very sensitive and wrk clsely with the dctrs and nurses, wh keep us updated n each patient. 5 And my magic medicine des indeed seem t d the trick. While the dctr cncentrates n examining Lara’s ankle, I get her attentin by ding a magic trick. Althugh she is clearly still in sme pain, her scared and anxius lk has been replaced—first by a small smile, and then by lud laughter as I “magically” prduce her sck frm ut f my pcket. Seeing their daughter s much happier has in turn made Lara’s parents mre relaxed. 6 And as fr me? Well, when I take ff my wig and my red nse, I’m still wearing a big smile, as I remember all the fun and laughter f the day. While there might be mre hspital visits ahead fr Lara and thers, I hpe that clwn dctrs help make it a friendlier place t visit. After all, it really is true that “laughter is the best medicine”.
