One day, I heard an American by say t a Chinese girl student, “ Yu speak very gd English.” But the girl answered, “ N, n. My English is very pr.” The freigner was quite surprised at the answer. Thinking he had nt made 16 understd r the girl had nt heard him clearly, he said , “ Yes , indeed, yu speak very well.” 17 the girl still kept saying , “ N.” In the end the American by culd nt understand and didn’t knw 18 t say.
What’s wrng with the girl’s answer? She didn’t 19 a cmpliment ( 恭维)in the same way as the American peple d. She shuld answer, “Thank yu” instead f “N”. She 20
understd what the American by had said, but she thught she shuld be mdest. In the 21 , peple will feel prud and cnfident when they are praised. S if smene says the 22 yu have cked are very delicius, yu shuld say,“ Thank yu .”
In ur cuntry we think being mdest is a virtue (美德) and being prud is a bad thing , but in my pinin, being cnfident des nt 23 being prud, s smetimes yu shuld be cnfident 24 being mdest. If yu are mdest and say , “N, I’m afraid I can’t d it well” , while wrking in a western cuntry , the thers may think that yu really cannt d it . If yu ften say “N” , yu will certainly be lked dwn upn by thers. When asking fr a jb , if ne says smething like “Yes , I can certainly d it ” instead f “ Let me have a try ” , he r she will
25 get it . S in the west , yu shuld be brave t shw yur self-cnfidence.

Every persn uses his wn special wrds t shw his ideas and feelings. Sme f these expressins are cmmnly used fr many years. Others are ppular fr just a shrt time. One such American expressin is “Where’s the beef ?”. It is used when smething is nt as gd as it is said t be. In the early 1980s, “Where’s the beef ?” was ne f the mst ppular expressins in the United States. It seemed as if everyne was using it at that time.
Beef, f curse, is the meat frm a cw, and n fd is mre ppular in America than a hamburger made frm beef. In the 1960s, a businessman named Ray Krch began building small restaurants that sld hamburgers at a lw price. Krch called his restaurant “McDnald’s”. Ray Krch became ne f the richest businessmen in America.
Other business peple saw his success. Sme f them pened their wn hamburger restaurants. One cmpany called “Wendy’s” said its hamburgers were bigger than thse sld by McDnald’s r anyne else. The Wendy’s cmpany began t use the expressin “Where’s the beef ?” t make peple knw that Wendy’s hamburgers were the biggest. The Wendy’s televisin advertisement shwed three ld wmen eating hamburgers. The bread that cvered the meat was very big, but inside there was nly a bit f meat. One f the wmen said she wuld nt eat a hamburger with such a little piece f beef.“Where’s the beef?”she shuted in a funny way. The advertisement fr Wendy’s hamburger restaurants was a success. As we said, it seemed everyne began using the expressin “Where’s the beef ?”.

“Hw are yu?” is a nice questin. It’s a friendly way that peple in the USA greet each ther. But “Hw are yu?” is als a very unusual questin. It’s a questin that ften desn’t need an answer. The persn wh asks “Hw are yu?” hpes t hear the answer “Fine”, even if the persn’s friend isn’t fine. The reasn is that “Hw are yu?” isn’t really a questin and “Fine” isn’t really an answer. They are simply ther ways f saying “Hell” r “Hi”.
Smetimes, peple dn’t say exactly what they mean. Fr example, when smene asks “D yu agree?”, the ther persn might think, “N, I disagree. I think yu’re wrng...” But it isn’t very plite t disagree s strngly, s the ther persn might say “I’m nt sure.” It’s a nicer way t say that yu dn’t agree with smene.
Peple dn’t say exactly what they are thinking when they want t finish talking with ther peple. Fr example, many talks ver the phne finish when ne persn says “I’ve t g nw.” Often, the persn wh wants t hang up gives an excuse: “Smene’s at the dr.” “Smething is burning n the stve.” The excuses might be real, r nt. Perhaps the persn wh wants t hang up simply desn’t want t talk any mre, but it isn’t plite t say that. The excuse is mre plite, and it desn’t hurt the ther persn.
Whether they are greeting each ther, talking abut an idea, r finishing a talk, peple dn’t say exactly what they are thinking. It’s an imprtant way that peple try t be nice t each ther, and it’s part f the game f language.
