Sentences (a), (b) and (c) cntain a clause defining a nun r prnun in the sentence. Sentences (d), (e) and (f) are cnstructed with a pair f simple sentences, with ne defining a nun r prnun in the ther sentence in each pair.
Why des the authr chse t use sentence (a), (b) and (c) in the reading passage?
Because there is a clser link and cnnectin between the item and the clause defining it in sentences (a), (b) and (c). It will als make the passage clearer, and create an emphatic effect n the lcatin, time and reasn being defined.

关系副词when, where, why的用法
关系副词引导定语从句时,既引导定语从句,又在定语从句中充当状语。
1. where 表示地点,只能跟在表地点或场合的 名词后。相当于in which。 注意:where不在从句中作主语或宾语。 Please leave the bk at the place where it was. =Please leave the bk at the place in which it was.
2.when表示时间,只能跟在表时间的名词后。相当于n/in which.July, when we can g hme fr a rest, is cming sn.=July, in which we can g hme fr a rest, is cming 表示原因,通常跟在reasn后引导定语从句。相当于fr which.This is the reasn why he cried.=This is the reasn fr which he cried.
关系代词which/whm前介词的选择由先行词的习惯搭配或后半句动词的搭配决定。
