(2022·广西贵港)A Chinese knot (中国结) is woven (编织) with a single rope (绳). It has different shapes. Each shape has its own meaning. People can use ropes of different colors to weave a Chinese knot, but they usually use red because it means good luck.

(2022·广西贵港)Now, more and more people have difficulties in falling asleep. “In fact, we can train our brain to fall asleep,” says sleep expert Michael Grandner. Here are his top ways.
Make a plan and stick to it.
Melatonin (褪黑素) is produced by the body to control when you get sleepy and when you wake up. As night falls, the levels of melatonin rise, telling the body that it’s time for bed. And the levels naturally fall as daylight comes near, getting you ready to greet the day.
The release (释放) of melatonin needs to be at regular (有规律的) times. So if your bedtime and wake-up time change from day to day, your body doesn’t know how to respond (回应). So it’s important to have a regular bedtime and wake up time, even on weekends.
Don’t lie in bed awake.
In fact, this way is very helpful. Whether it’s the beginning of the night or the middle of the night, if you’ve been awake for 20 or 30 minutes, get up. Maybe you just need five minutes to get sleepy, or maybe an hour, but don’t spend that time awake in bed.
Change your attitude (态度) about sleep.
Many people regard sleeping as the final thing in a busy day, so they would rather delay sleeping to do housework, schoolwork or others. That thought needs to be changed. Make sure your sleep time is enough in order to work better the next day. It may sound like a small change, but it’s an important one.

(2022·广西贵港)It’s often said, “You can’t live only on air.” But now the Chinese scientists can tell you: Maybe you can.
Recently, some Chinese scientists have made a big breakthrough (突破). They turned CO2 into starch (淀粉).
Starch is the main part of rice and corn that we eat every day. Usually, it’s created by plants with CO2, water and sunlight. According to the team’s director Ma Yanhe, it takes the plants nearly sixty steps to produce starch. But now, the team, after six years of hard work, has found a simpler way to do this, with only eleven steps.
“Our study shows that creating something like starch is possible in a laboratory, and this technology may be helpful in many areas,” said Ma.
The scientists first turned CO2 and hydrogen (氢气) into methanol (甲醇). Then they made these methanol molecules (分子) into bigger and more complex (复杂的) molecules. Finally the starch came out.
This method makes it possible to produce food in factories instead of traditional farming. This will not only help make plenty of food, but also save water and land. It may also help recycle CO2 to deal with climate (气候) change, according to China Daily.
The study can be helpful in space, too. Astronauts may no longer need to worry about their food as they travel in space. They may simply turn the CO2 they breathe out into the food they eat!
11.What achievement have the Chinese scientists made recently?

B.They grew corn in space.
C.They turned O2 into starch.
D.They improved traditional farming.

14.The technology may be helpful in the following areas EXCEPT ________.
A.making food
B.putting sunlight to good use
C.saving water and land
D.dealing with climate change
15.What’s the best title of the passage?
A.How to Deal with CO2
B.The Advantages of Making Starch
C.How to Make Food in Space
D.China’s First Step in Man-made Food
(2021·广西贵港)Humans have many organs(器官), but you can enjoy lots of things because of your ears. Do you know how the ears work?
The ear has three parts: the outer ear(外耳), the middle ear and the inner ear(内耳). The outer ear is the part you can see. It collects sounds around you. The sounds then travel down to the middle ear, the inner ear and then to your brain.
Your ears never stop working, even when you are asleep! In other words, your ears continue hearing sounds, but you can’t hear the sounds just because your brain ignores them.
But ears do more than hear. They help you keep balanced(平衡的), too. In the inner ear, there are organs that are filled with liquid(液体)and covered with small hairs. When you move your head, the liquid and hairs move, too. They send messages to your brain about the position of your head.
More surprisingly, ears even help to taste food. Of course, you don’t actually taste food with your ears. But there are nerves(神经)running through the middle ear that connect the tongue(舌头) to the brain. If something happens to your ears, you might have a hard time telling different tastes.
The ears are truly important organs. We should protect our ears well.

(2020·广西贵港)We have been used to wearing masks(口罩)in public since February. About 300 million masks are used and then thrown away every day in China. Where do these masks go? You might think they just go in a rubbish bin. But that's just the first stop on the masks' journey.
After the masks are thrown into the bins, rubbish trucks empty the bins and take the rubbish to landfills(垃圾场). Next, the masks will be taken to rubbish incinerators(焚化炉)and burned. Burning masks might not seem to be very good for the environment. Won't it cause pollution?
The answer is "no", according to China Daily. The main material of most masks is polypropylene(聚丙烯). It's non-toxic(无毒的). After burning, it changes into water and CO2.
In fact, burning the masks can bring some benefits(益处). The process of burning the rubbish can produce electricity. Burning one ton of rubbish can produce more than 400 kilowatt hours(度)of electricity. Some people make a prediction that there will be 162,000 tons of used masks in China this year. Burning all of them can produce more than 64 million kilowatt hours of electricity. This is enough to make an electric car drive about 370 million km, which is 9,250 times as long as the earth's equator.

On December 26th, 2020, China passed a new law to protect the Yangtze River, the “mother river” of China. It is Yangtze River Protection Law. It took effect(生效)on March 1st, 2021. It's the first law to protect a waterway in China.
The 6,397-kilometer Yangtze River is the longest river in Asia. It covers an area of about 1.8 million square kilometers, about one fifth of the national total. The Yangtze River provides one third of the country's freshwater resources(淡水资源), but it has met lots of environmental problems in recent years, such as heavy pollution and overfishing. Especially, the river's Chinese paddlefish(白鲟)has died out. So the “mother river” is in great need of protection. To solve these problems, China put a 10-year fishing ban(禁令)at the beginning of this year to protect fish resources.
According to a report of the government, the fishermen said they would give up fishing along the Yangtze River to protect the “mother river”. Chinese officer Han Zheng said that more support should be given to the fishermen to help them find new jobs and places to live.
Yangtze River Protection Law includes resource protection and green development. The government says the purpose of the new law is to strengthen(加强)environmental protection, use resources well and make the development sustainable(可持续的).

(2020·广西贵港)It’s sad to learn that a whale has died in the ocean. However, that is not the end for the whale. It gives a lot to other sea animals after death.
When a whale dies, it quickly drops to the bottom of the ocean floor. There the whale’s dead body provides food and nutrients(营养) for deep-sea animals. The remains(残骸) can last(持续) for ten years and build an ecosystem called a whale fall — an “oasis(绿洲)” of life in the deep sea.
Chinese scientists found a whale fall for the first time in the South China Sea this year. The whale fall ecosystem can stay in the deep ocean because of great pressure and cold temperature there. They can stop the body from decomposing(分解) too quickly. The depth(深度) makes it hard for scientists to find the whale fall. There are less than 50 known whale falls in the world.
The whale fall in the South China Sea is about three meters long. Scientists have found several species(物种) near the whale fall. Some fish have started to eat the whale’s tail. A scientist named Xie Wei says the whale fall might be quite recent and needs long-term observation(观察). By studying the whale fall, scientists can better understand how sea ecosystems support life.
