(2022·广西河池)On Dec. 9, three Chinese astronauts gave a science lecture 400 kilometers above Earth! Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu who are working aboard the Tiangong space station, showed our students a glimpse of their life there. They also did some fun science experiments. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Use it or lose it
The human body grows with the pull of Earth’s gravity(重力). But in space, our bones and muscles(肌肉) don’t need to support our body’s weight. This will cause bone and muscle loss. It’s reported that astronauts can lose up to 20% of their muscles after just a couple of weeks. That is dangerous for astronauts because they will be too weak to work.
Astronauts have different ways to prevent this. During the lecture, Zhai introduced a special uniform Ye was wearing. It’s called a “penguin suit”. There are many elastic bands(弹力带) inside the suit. Wearing it, astronauts use their muscles to stretch(拉伸) the bands. This keeps their muscles strong. Wang also showed students how she walked on a treadmill(跑步机) and rode a bicycle. Astronauts exercise with these tools every day to prevent muscle loss.
Space water is different
Water in space acts differently from water on Earth in other ways. For example, water will not flow(流动) downward if you try to pour it into a cup. That’s why astronauts usually drink water through straws(吸管) in sealed(密封的)bags. If astronauts cry, the tears will stay on their eyeballs instead of falling down. They have to wipe(擦拭) them away!
During another experiment, Wang made a water film(膜). Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on Earth.

(2021·广西河池)Imagine using your coat to look through the internet, send and receive messages, and even read a map. Yes, you read that correctly—your coat.
It may sound silly, but it’s something scientists are working on. Researchers at Shanghai’s Fudan University have made a new type of cloth that can be used as a digital display (显示屏).
Professor Peng Huisheng and his team have spent 10 years trying to make “digital cloth”. After testing different combinations, they chose two materials that worked: a silver-plated yarn (镀银纱)that can light up and a kind of thread (纺线)that conducts (传导)electricity.
The results have been admirable. It’s not only wearable and foldable, but also washable. After being put through 100 wash-and-dry cycles in a washing machine and folded 10, 000 times, the cloth remained almost unchanged.
Peng believes that the new cloth could be used for many things. For example, it could allow a driver to view a GPS map on their arm while they drive around. It could also help people communicate better if they have language barriers (障碍)or disabilities.
In one test, Peng’s team collected brainwaves from volunteers who had either been playing a game or meditating. The waves were then translated into messages like “anxious” or “relaxed” and shown on the cloth. This could help deaf-mute (聋哑的) people “talk” to each other in the future.
“We hope that new materials will shape next-generation electronic devices by changing the way we interact with them, ”said Peng.

(2020·广西河池)What do you use to unlock your cellphone? A password? A fingerprint? Or simply a glance(一瞥)?
On September 12, 2017, Apple introduced its iPhone X, which has an eye﹣catching feature(特色)﹣Face ID.
With Face ID, Apple says, you can unlock your new iPhone by just looking at it. It is powered by a so﹣called True Depth camera system built into the front of the iPhone X.
When the camera system sees a person's face, it uses 30, 000 unseen dots(点)to "map"(勾画)the shape and outline of the face. A mathematical model of the face will then be created and stored(储存)in the phone.
The next time the person looks at the iPhone X, the same dots are mapped onto his or her face and compared to the stored model. If the two match, then the phone unlocks.
This happens in less than a second.
Apple says the system is smart. If you change your hairstyle, put on sunglasses or makeup, or use the phone in the dark, Face ID still works.
Although the technology sounds fancy, there are still concerns(担心). For example, will Face ID work for twins?
According to Apple, the chance of others to unlock your iPhone X using Face ID is one in a million. Face ID can tell the difference between twins, but the error rating(出错率) rises. So one would need to set a password then.
Apple also emphasizes(强调)that Face ID only unlocks when you stare at it. It is what Apple calls "attention aware(察觉)". So the phone won't unlock if you are just glancing at the phone for the time. It won't work either if someone puts the phone at your sleeping face or your photo.
41.The new function(功能) of the iPhone X is that you can unlock it with ________.
A.a sign B.a password C.a fingerprint D.Face ID.
42.The camera system of Face ID works by ________.
A.remembering users' faces by taking their pictures
B.using a map to store face models of its users for later use
C.matching the users' faces with unseen dots stored in the system

43.Face ID doesn't work when you ________.
A.wear a mask B.put on sunglasses
C.change your hairstyle D.use the iPhone X in the dark
44.You would need to set a password to prevent________ to unlock your iPhone X with Face ID.

Many have heard of shark fin soup. This famous and expensive dish is especially popular in southern China. But do you realize that you’re killing a whole shark each time you enjoy a bowl of shark fin soup?
When people catch sharks, they cut off their fins and throw the sharks back into the ocean. This is not only cruel, but also harmful to the environment. Without a fin, a shark can no longer swim and slowly dies. Sharks are at the top of the food chain in the ocean’s ecosystem. If their numbers drop too low, it will bring danger to all ocean life. Many believe that sharks can never be endangered because they are the strongest in their food chain. But in fact, around 70 million sharks are caught and traded in this industry every year. The numbers of some kinds of sharks have fallen by over 90 percent in the last 20 to 30 years.
So far, no scientific studies have shown that shark fins are good for health, so why eat them? Help save the sharks!
