(2022·辽宁大连)In a small village, there was a wise old man named Ryan. One day his young nephew (侄子) Keith came to visit him. During their talk, Keith said he was sad and worried about his little progress in learning the guitar. However hard he tried, he just couldn’t improve much.
Keith asked his uncle for advice. “Follow me.” said Ryan, and he led Keith up to the high hills around the village. This road was long and difficult, but Keith followed the old man. As they got higher. Ryan said that he needed to go to the top of the highest hill where he had never been to. Keith was surprised but decided to help his uncle.
With great difficulty, Keith helped his uncle climb the hill. Sometimes he even carried the old man on his back. At the top, sweating(流汗), he put his uncle back on the ground and laughed with joy.
“Do you remember the times when you were a little boy? Sometimes you returned home with tears in your eyes,” said Ryan. “The other children teased (嘲笑) you. Do you remember why?”
Keith looked around and nodded. He remembered that as a child he often played on the hills with other children. They called this hill Mount Impossible, because small children couldn’t reach its top. “At that time I was unable to get here,” said Keith. “The bigger kids had no problem.”
“And today,” said Ryan. “you not only climbed here, but also dragged me up.”
“I became bigger and stronger.”
“Instead of climbing Mount Impossible every day, you played on the smaller hills and became better at climbing. You became stronger.” said Ryan. “Mount Impossible became possible for you to climb while you weren’t even thinking about it.”

8.What did Ryan want to tell Keith?

(2022·辽宁大连)①Otters (水猴) are cute water animals. Recently, there has been a trend (趋势) of keeping them as pets. In Japan, some “otter cafes” are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take “funny” videos. These photos and videos posted online have attracted more people to buy otters as pets.
②However, these photos and videos mask the fact that the online trade is doing harm to otters. In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70 percent of otters sold online are under a year old. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers. When they’re kept as pets by humans, they do not live full, natural lives.
③Otters are very social (群居的). They live in family groups of up to fifteen in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. These animals also need enough space to swim. Their owners’ bathtubs (浴缸) or pools are much smaller than the bodies of water in the wild.
④On the other hand, it is not wise to keep otters as pets at home. They have a very special fishy smell. If they’re kept indoors, they will leave a lot of droppings around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are upset, they will make loud noises and even attack (攻击) people. If a person is bitten by an otter, he or she needs to go to the hospital immediately.
⑤So, what can we do to stop the otter pet trade? Well, one of the main ways is to let more people know that otters should not be kept as pets. We should also keep an eye on online posts about these animals. When photos and videos show baby otters being kept or sold as pets, don’t share them.
9.People like to keep otters as pets because they are ________.
A.lonely B.cute C.friendly D.quiet
10.The underlined word “mask” has the closest meaning to ________.
A.show B.protect C.hide D.change
11.Because of the online pet trade, otters ________.
A.may often fall ill B.can’t live a social life
C.have no food to eat D.have no place to swim
12.What does Paragraph ④ mainly tell us?
A.Otters don’t make good pets. B.Otters are dangerous to people.
C.Otters may live a hard life as pets. D.Otters often make a mess in the room.
13.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To stop people from keeping pets at home.
B.To introduce the ways of protecting pet otters.
C.To show the facts of the online otter pet trade.
D.To tell people to say no to the otter pet trade.

How do you go to school every day? By bike or on foot? Maybe you can try a new way-taking a S’Cool Bus.
The S’Cool Bus is also called the bike bus. It was invented in the bike kingdom—the Netherlands. It is all about green lifestyle, sport and sharing. It’s interesting for kids to ride the bus together to go to school.
Also, it is very safe. The bike bus has a driver and eleven seats for kids. Each one has a helmet(头盔) and safety belt(安全带). There is also a roof on the bus. It can be used on hot days or rainy days to make kids feel comfortable.
Riding the bike bus is one of the greatest ways for children to get to school. Peter, a 10-year-old pupil, becomes a big fan of the bike bus. “Now the S’Cool Bus is my favorite way of transport. Can laughing every day help keep the heart attack (心脏病) away? Maybe so. Laughter, along with an active sense of humor, may help protect people against the heart attack, according to a recent study from the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
“The old saying that ‘Laughter is the best medicine.’ seems to be true when it comes to protecting your heart,” said Michael Miller at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
In the study, researchers compared the humor responses (反应) of 300 people. Half of them had suffered a heart attack. The other 150 did not have heart disease. Researchers provided people from the first group with a series of multiple-choice (多选的) questions to find out how much or how little they laughed in certain situations. And the second group were given true or false questions to help researchers know more about anger.
Miller said the most important study finding was that “people with heart disease responded less humorously to everyday life situations” They generally laughed less, even in positive (乐观的) situations, and they showed more anger. “We know that exercising, no smoking and eating foods low in fat will help cut down on the risk of heart disease. Perhaps hearty laughter should be added to the list.” Miller said.
It may be possible to put laughter into our daily activities, just as we do with other heart-healthy activities, such as walking up the stairs instead of taking the lift. According to Miller, every one of us is supposed to read something humorous or watch a funny video, and try to find ways to take ourselves less seriously.
31.At the very beginning of this article, the topic is introduced by ________.
A.an example B.a question C.a problem D.an experiment(实验)
32.In the study, what did researchers want to know about the first group of people?
A.Why they suffered a heart attack.
B.Whether they had heart disease or not.
C.What helped protect them against heart disease.
D.How much or how little they laughed in certain situations.
33.The result of the study shows that ________.
A.the first group of people generally laughed more
B.the second group of people showed more anger
C.exercising can keep people away from getting sick
D.laughing can help cut down on the risk of heart disease
34.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.It is time to take ourselves less seriously.
B.Laughter is as important as walking up the stairs.
C.Every one of us should do something to keep fit.
D.Laughter is the best medicine to keep heart healthy.
(2020·辽宁大连)When I arrived at my class on the early morning, I suddenly felt upset and uncomfortable. Today was the day when our teacher would leave and move to another school. Mr. Smith was very easy to talk with and to have fun with. He was cool, relaxed and was always friendly when you would see him. I couldn’t even imagine how things were going to be without him.
“Thank you everyone for my time here. I will forever keep these memories and friendships I’ve made in the past five years.” He took a deep breath and said, “As a moment for me leaving, please look under your seats.”
Confused(疑惑不解的), I slowly checked under my seat to see a yellow block of wood that read “Love” on it. I quickly got it and began to study it. After seconds of watching the block, I realized that it was a Jenga block(积木块).
Tears ran down my face and fell on the Jenga block. I heard my classmates sobbing(抽泣). That was to say, everyone in my class had a Jenga block with the word “Love”. We hadn’t found a way to express(表达) our sadness and also we couldn’t find a way to express our love to the respectable(令人尊敬的) man. “This is a reminder(提示物) to always love others.” Mr. Smith said slowly.
Maybe that day wasn’t the worst day, and it was just a moment of my life and I was too young to understand Mr. Smith. (2021·辽宁大连)In high school and college, you may be encouraged to travel or study abroad. Perhaps you are too busy with your schoolwork to seriously consider these chances. I encourage traveling at a young age. ___44___
As young people, most of us live with mom and dad. Our community knows us well, too. The idea of getting out of this comfort zone(舒适区)can be scary(可怕的).
___45___ In our daily life, we know well how to act and respond(答复)to people. But how about being in a new place, with strangers who hold different values? It can be uncomfortable at first. But once you work out that you can connect with people in spite of(尽管)differences, you become smarter and more confident. You should learn to face this discomfort. It will help you to grow.
By traveling widely, you will also develop cultural sensitivity(敏感性). Being culturally sensitive is important. And it is not enough to just know, “People from that country are like this.”
When I was in Spain, for example, I found people there took a two-hour break in the middle of their workday. Many foreigners consider the Spanish people lazy. ___46___ To the Spanish people, eating together as a family is more important than anything else. Cultural sensitivity will help you with your communication on both business and personal levels.

A.It helps you to learn a new language as well.
B.In fact, the Spanish people are always like this.
C.However, one learns the most in strange situations.

(2020·辽宁大连)Good grammar matters
Why is good grammar important? Well, good grammar can save lives! Just consider the difference between “Let's eat. Grandma!” and “Let’s eat Grandma!” With the first one, you are inviting your grandma over for a lovely meal. The second one sounds like you are excited about cannibalism(同类相食).
Jokes aside, some people think good grammar is unnecessary. They think that as long as they are being understood, it should not matter whether there are a few grammatical mistakes or not.
___48___ I believe good grammar matters.
Thinking about your grammar when you are writing makes you easier to be understood. You may think a grammatical mistake doesn’t matter. But think about it from the reader’s point of view(观点). Even a small mistake can make your reader stop and read the message again. ___49___
___50___ Being able to speak and write correctly, over time, builds your confidence while using English. This will encourage you to increase your vocabulary. With good grammar and a wide vocabulary, you will find it easier to express your ideas and communicate with native speakers(讲母语的人) .
Good grammar can also make you appear more reliable(值得信赖的). Just think about your attitudes(态度) towards a newspaper that has many grammatical mistakes in its articles. You will doubt (怀疑) if the information in the newspaper is reliable, won’t you?
The same is true on a personal level. If there are many careless mistakes, then it appears to readers that you don’t care about your work. This makes them less likely(可能的) to trust you.
___51___
A.But I don’t think so.
B.That will make your writing bad.
C.So will you try to learn grammar well?
D.He or she will have to spend more time understanding it.
E.I hope you have now seen the importance of good grammar.
F.Good English grammar will help improve your English skills.

The small village sits at the top of an 800-meter-high cliff (悬崖). People can only get up to it by climbing a 2.556-step steel ladder (钢梯). It is very dangerous.
②So, was Chen looking for adventure there? The answer is no. The famous presenter was, instead, making a documentary.
③In February 2021, China reached an important goal. It got rid of poverty (摆脱贫困). Many people couldn’t believe this. After all, China has a large number of poor villages. In order to show the truth to people, Chen set out to make No Poverty Land.

⑤This steel ladder, in fact, is only six years old. Before it was built, the villagers had to face even bigger danger and use a rattan (藤条制成的) ladder. The government has also built houses for the villagers at the foot of the mountain. Through No Poverty Land, people can easily see how life in poor areas of China has been improved.

(2020·辽宁大连)Orphan elephants
An elephant calf
When an elephant calf is born, it stands quickly on its feet. It drinks milk from its mother for a few years. The mother elephant teaches her calf how to use its trunk(象鼻). She teaches it many things. The mother elephant is very important to an elephant calf.
Becoming an orphan
Elephants travel a lot. Sometimes they have to cross rivers. A calf can be washed down a river. Or it can fall into a hole. When a calf is separated from its mother, it becomes an orphan. Sometimes a calf becomes an orphan because its mother has been killed.
A park for orphans
In the wild, an elephant calf needs its mother. It can’t live without her. It can get sick. Some people called keepers, take care of the orphan elephants in a park. The keepers take care of the elephants until they can take care of themselves. Then, the keepers take the elephants back to the wild.
Caring for the orphans
The keepers need to teach an elephant calf how to feed. To make it more relaxed, they rest its trunk against a huge blanket (毯子) , which feels a little like its mother. In the wild, an elephant calf will go under its mother to find shelter (庇护处) from the sun. At the park, the keepers put an umbrella over them.
Dika--an orphan elephant
One day, the keepers found Dika. He was all alone. Some people had killed Dika’s family, and he had run away. The keepers took Dika to the park. He was taken care of, but he cried for his mother. It was a long time before Dika was happy again.
Back to the wild
Dika was ten years old before he could live in the wild again. Many years later, he came back to the park. He had some wire (电线) around his leg. He needed the keepers to help him. Orphan elephants don’t forget where they were cared for.
