    Finding a New Spring
A tradesman was leading a caravan(商队) to another country to sell his goods. Along the way they came to the edge of a severe hot-sand desert. They learnt that during the daytime the sun heats up the fine sand until it’s as hot as charcoal, so no one can walk on it — not even bullocks(小公牛) or camels! So the caravan leader hired a desert guide, one who could follow the stars, so they could travel only at night when the sand cools down. They began the dangerous night-time journey across the desert. A couple of nights later, after eating their evening meal, and waiting for the sand to cool, they started out again.
Later that night, the desert guide, who was driving the first cart, saw from the stars that they were getting close to the other side of the desert. He had also overeaten, so that when he relaxed, he fell asleep. Then the bullocks who, of course, couldn’t tell directions by reading the stars, gradually turned to the side and went in a big wide circle until they ended up at the same place they had started from! By then it was morning, and the people realized they were back at the same spot. They lost heart and began to cry about their condition. Since the desert crossing was supposed to be over by now, they had no more water and were afraid they would die of thirst. They even began to blame the caravan leader and the desert guide.
However, the leader himself didn’t lose courage. He began walking back and forth, trying to think out a plan. Remaining alert, out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a small clump of grass. He thought, "Without water, no plant could live in this desert." So he asked his fellow travelers to dig up the ground on that very spot. They dug and dug, and after a while they got down to a large stone. He got down into the hole, put his ear to the stone, and heard the sound of flowing water.
A spring was found. All the people were overjoyed. They drank and bathed and washed the animals and cooked their food and ate. Before they left, they raised a high flag so that other travelers could see the new spring in the middle of the hot-sand desert. Then they continued on safely to the end of their journey.
    26. Why did the tradesman and his caravan have to travel during the night?
    A. To use less water while crossing the desert.
    B. It was too hot to walk on the desert in the daytime.
    C. They might be able to find the spring in the quiet night.
    D. The guide could find a short way by following the stars.
    27. Why did the group feel so desperate when they were back to the starting point?
    A. They were in danger of dying of thirst.
    B. They were running out of food.
    C. Their guide had lost the way.
    D. Their leader had lost heart.
    28. What is the moral of the story?
    A. Never give up too easily.

    C. Don’t forget sorrow follows extreme joy.
    D. Never refuse to offer help when you are needed.

I am Henry Jekyll. I was born in the 1800s. I inherited(继承) a large fortune, a healthy body and an excellent mind. I was naturally hard-working and soon I was very successful in my job. So the outside world saw a serious, hard-working, successful doctor. Behind this quiet character, however, was a wild, fun-loving, irresponsible young man. Both of them were me. They lived together in the same body.
“Was it possible,” I wondered, “to find a drug that could give each side of my character its own separate face and body?”
After much thought and careful study I believed I had found the answer. I had read many scientific books and spent many hours in my laboratory, searching for the right mixture of chemicals to make my drug. At last I got everything ready.
Late one night, I mixed everything together and prepared my drug. I watched the smoke rising from the liquid as its color changed from red to purple and at last to green. Then, bravely, I drank every bitter drop.I felt a violent sickness in my stomach and a terrible pain in all my bones. The room seemed to turn round and round and I trembled with fear. Then the fear and pain disappeared and a strange, sweet feeling took its place. Wild thoughts danced through my mind—the wild passions of an evil and cruel stranger. But inside myself I felt younger, lighter, more carefree than ever before. “If this is pure evil,” I thought, “I like it.”
I stood there, enjoying these strange new thoughts and passions and suddenly realized that I was shorter. So I decided to go to my bedroom in my new body and take a look at myself in the mirror there. As I came into my room, I saw Edward Hyde for the first time.
At that time, the good side of my character was stronger than the evil side. Henry Jekyll had his faults, but he was mostly a good, kind man. I believe that is the reason why Edward Hyde was so much smaller than Henry Jekyll. But that was not the only difference between the two men. Henry Jekyll had a kind, open, honest face. But pure evil stared out of Edward Hyde’s eyes. I felt no dislike, however. Indeed, I welcomed him. Edward Hyde was me, young and strong and full of life.
    29. In others’ eyes, the writer was ______.
    A. wild and successful B. fun-loving and responsible
    C. quiet and irresponsible D. serious and hard-working
    30. The writer wanted to find a drug to ______.
    A. discover the right mixture of chemicals
    B. create separate bodies for both sides
    C. observe the change of the chemicals
    D. make himself smaller but stronger
    31. From the passage we can learn that the writer ______.
    A. felt quite delighted right after taking the drug
    B. preferred kind Henry to pure evil Edward
    C. was very sick of the shorter Edward Hyde
    D. was satisfied with both of his bodies

Upskilling is the future—but it must work for everyone
Automation and job replacement will be one of the most significant challenges for the global economy of the coming decades. A 2017 Mckinsey report established that 375 million workers will need to switch occupational categories by 2030. The World Economic Forum suggests that by 2022, automation will replace 75 million jobs globally—but create 133 million new ones.
Research into the likelihood that a job will be impacted by digitization has largely focused on the “automatability” of the role and the following economic regional and political effects of this. What this research doesn’t take into account is something more important for the millions of taxi drivers and retail workers across the globe: their likelihood of being able to change to another job that isn’t automatable. Recent research suggests that the answer to this may be that the skills that enable workers to move up the ladder to more complex roles within their current areas might be less important than broader skills that will enable workers to change across divisions.
In July, Amazon announced that it would spend $700 million retraining around 30% of its 300,000 US workforce. While praiseworthy, it will be interesting to see the outcome. In the UK, the National Retraining Scheme has largely been led by employers, meaning that those on zero-hours contracts and part-time workers—often low-skilled—will miss out. Governance will be a crucial element of ensuring that such schemes focus on individuals and life-long learning, rather than upskilling workers into roles that will soon also face automation.
According to the Mckinsey report, “growing awareness of the scale of the task ahead has yet to translate into action. Public spending on labour-force training and support has fallen for years in most member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development,” which impacts more than just the low-skilled and poorly compensated.
The global impact of automation is also put into relief by research demonstrating that, between 1988 and 2015, income inequality increased throughout the world. Billions of people do not have the essentials of life as defined by the UN Sustainable Development goals.
Alongside climate change, automation is arguably tech’s biggest challenge. As with globalization, governments and employers—and us workers—ignore its potential consequences at risk to ourselves.
    32. It can be known from Paragraph 2 that .
    A. recent research has found ways to face automation
    B. broad skills are of great significance in changing jobs
    C. regional economy can affect the automatability of a job
    D. it is even harder for workers to move up the social ladder
    33. What is the author’s attitude towards retraining programs?
    A. Supportive. B. Critical.
    C. Skeptical. D. Sympathetic.
    34. According to the author what is one consequence of automation?
    A. Less spending on training. B. A slowdown of globalization.
    C. Social unrest and instability. D. An increase in income inequality.
    35. The passage is written to .
    A. argue the urgency of creating new jobs B. compare globalization with automation
    C. analyze the automatability of certain jobs D. stress the importance of upskilling workers
B 33. C 34. D 35. D

Movies come in the mail and the family watch them throughout the week before sending them back and ordering new ones. Then, fast forward to 2008, and you have started to watch TV shows on Netflix’s new platform.
Now, let’s come to the present. You sit down and open up Netflix on your TV and scroll for a while. Then you flip over to Hulu to see if they have anything more interesting to offer. Then you check HBO GO. Finally, you check Disney+. Then you realize that you’re paying for four different streaming services, maybe more.
Let’s return to Netflix. More generally, streaming. There are over 100 video streaming services available, as well as quite a few music streaming, including Apple Music, YouTube Music, Google Play, and etc. The streaming world, at least to some, is on its way to getting out of control, with each service requiring its own monthly subscription. And that is just entertainment subscriptions. We haven’t even taken into account subscriptions like Microsoft Office, magazine subscriptions, and email newsletters. Subscriptions started out as a service of convenience, but now, the oversaturation may have become burdensome. The services believe customers will pay more to get the content they want. However, statistics show a growing frustration(失望) among consumers. With so many options, they find it harder than ever to make a decision on what to pick.
Not only does the oversaturation of streaming result in confusing navigation, it also creates a financial burden for the consumers. Let’s say if you want to watch Stranger Things , The Handmaid’s Tale , and Game of Thrones , which belong to three different services, you would have to pay nearly $50 a month to access all three of those services, meaning it’s not cheaper, and potentially more expensive, than cable.
People cut their cords and went the streaming route because it was simpler and cheaper. Now, it’s just as inconvenient and difficult as cable was, if not more so, and unless you’re limiting yourself to one service, it’s not cheaper. Streaming will survive because we’re in a Golden Age of Media and because each service is able to create high-quality originals. But Golden Ages don’t last, and bubbles tend to burst. Until the inevitable(不可避免的) day when some product or service proves streaming out of date, we must suffer the choices in front of us. The next time you are scrolling through Netflix, Hulu, or whatever, and the overchoice is killing you, maybe you should just go pick up a book instead.

    38. According to the passage, streaming services may____.

It’s 2003 and your family has just finished arguing over which Netflix movies to rent that week.hen, fast forward to 2008, and you have started to watch TV shows on Netflix’s new platform. Then you realize that you’re paying for four different streaming services, maybe more.
Subscriptions started out as a service of convenience, but now可知订阅一开始是一种方便的服务,但现在,过多的订阅可能已经成为一种负担。 故选A。
Not only does the oversaturation of streaming result in confusing navigation, it also creates a financial burden for the consumers. 以及后文…meaning it’s not cheaper, and potentially more expensive, than cable可知……
But Golden Ages don’t last, and bubbles tend to burst. Until the inevitable day when some product or service proves streaming out of date, we must suffer the choices in front of us. The next time you are scrolling through Netflix, Hulu, or whatever, and the overchoice is killing you, maybe you should just go pick up a book instead.

How much time do you spend doing research before you make a decision? There are people who go over every detail exhaustively before making a choice. ____40____ Psychologists call this way of thinking a cognitive bias (偏见), a tendency toward a specific mental mistake.
To study “jumping”, we examined decision-making patterns among more than 600 people from the general population. We found that jumpers made more errors than non-jumpers on problems that require thoughtful analysis. ____41____ In a quiz about US civics, they overestimated the chance that their answers were right significantly more than other participants did—even when their answers were wrong.
So what is behind “jumping”?Psychological researchers commonly distinguish between two pathways of thought: automatic system, which reflects ideas that come to the mind easily, spontaneously and without effort, and controlled system including conscious and effortful reasoning. Jumpers and nonjumpers are equally influenced by automatic thoughts. ____42____
It is the controlled system that helps people counter balance mental biases introduced by the automatic system. As a result, jumpers were more likely to accept the conclusions made at first blush without further questioning. A lack of controlled thinking is also more broadly connected to their problematic beliefs and faulty reasoning.
____43____ A method called metacognitive training can be used to target their biases, which can help people think more deliberatively. In this training, participants are confronted with their own biases. They can learn about the missteps and other ways of thinking through the problem at hand. It helps to chip away at participants’ overconfidence.
In everyday life, the question of whether we should think things through or instead go with our gut is a frequent and important one. ____44____ Sometimes the most important decision we make can be to take some more time before making a choice.
    A. Happily, there may be some hope for jumpers.
    B. Also, jumpers had problems with overconfidence.
    C. But a fair number of individuals are quick to jump to conclusions.
    D. It is certainly possible for them to overthink things to take a decision.
    E. We plan to continue the work to trace other problems introduced by jumping.
    F. The jumpers, however, did not engage in controlled reasoning to the same degree as non-jumpers.
    G. Recent studies show that even gathering just a little bit more evidence may help us avoid a major mistake.
C 41. B 42. F 43. A 44. G

根据上文“How much time do you spend doing research before you make a decision? There are people who go over every detail exhaustively before making a choice. (你在做决定之前花了多少时间做研究?有些人在做出选择之前会仔细考虑每一个细节)”结合下文提到了jumper“急于得出结论的人”可知,呼应上文仔细考虑每一个细节的人,空处应提出另一种人——急于得出结论的人。C项“但相当一部分人很快就会得出结论”符合题意,与上文内容形成对比。故选C。
    【41题详解】
根据上文“We found that jumpers made more errors than non-jumpers on problems that require thoughtful analysis.(我们发现,在需要深思熟虑分析的问题上,急于得出结论的人比仔细思考的人犯的错误更多)”和下文“In a quiz about US civics, they overestimated the chance that their answers were right significantly more than other participants did—even when their answers were wrong.(在一次关于美国公民的测验中,他们大大高估了自己答案正确的几率——即使他们的答案是错误的)”推知,急于得出结论的人不仅容易犯错,而且过于自信,即使在答案是错误的情况下还高估答案正确的几率。
根据上文“automatic system, which reflects ideas that come to the mind easily, spontaneously and without effort, and controlled system including conscious and effortful reasoning. Jumpers and nonjumpers are equally influenced by automatic thoughts.
根据下文“A method called metacognitive training can be used to target their biases, which can help people think more deliberatively. In this training, participants are confronted with their own biases. They can learn about the missteps and other ways of thinking through the problem at hand. It helps to chip away at participants’ overconfidence.(一种叫做元认知训练的方法可以用来针对他们的偏见,这可以帮助人们更慎重地思考。在这个培训中,参与者要面对自己的偏见。他们可以学习到错误的地方和思考问题的其他方法。它有助于消除参与者的过度自信)”可知,有方法帮助急于得出结论的人克服他们的问题,消除过度自信。A项“幸运的是,急于得出结论者可能还有一些希望”符合题意。故选A。
根据上文“In everyday life, the question of whether we should think things through or instead go with our gut is a frequent and important one.(在日常生活中,我们是应该深思熟虑,还是按照直觉行事,这是一个常见而重要的问题)”和下文“Sometimes the most important decision we make can be to take some more time before making a choice.(有时候,我们做出的最重要决定可能要做出选择之前多花些时间)”可知,相较于按照直觉行事,深思熟虑对我们更有帮助。

Dear Jim,
How is everything going? I am glad to receive your e-mail, in which you asked me about my career plan for the future. Now I am writing to share it with you in details.
I made up my mind to be a journalist when I visited the Xinhua News Agency, the top one in China, last year. I chose it as my career based on the following two reasons. First, it is a job that can get me exposed to new things every day and thus keep me energetic and passionate all the time since I really hate to follow the same routine every day. Second, working as a journalist can help realize my childhood dream of being a hero by fighting against evil and spreading justice.
To achieve this goal, I plan to apply for the Communication University of China, whose major, Journalism, has been ranked the first for many years in a row across the whole country. After getting my Bachelor Degree of Journalism, I will continue my study in a world-famous university to broaden my horizons to better fit my future post.
That is all about my career plan. What do you think of it? I am looking forward to hearing yours if you have got one.
    Yours,

    Dear Jim,
How is everything going? I’m delighted to receive your e-mail, in which you asked me about my career plan for the future. Presently, I’m writing to share it with you in details.
I made up my mind to be a Chinese teacher after becoming a student of science. There exist several reasons that account for my choice. To begin with, it’s an occupation that can get me exposed to mild atmosphere where I can spread all the knowledge I’ve acquired, thus keeping me energetic and passionate all the time. In addition, working as a Chinese teacher can help me realize my ideal of being an erudite scholar. To achieve this goal, I’m scheduled to apply for the Normal University of Capital, whose major, Chinese Language and Literature, has been ranked the first for many years in a row across the whole city. After getting my Bachelor Degree of Chinese Language and Literature, I’ll continue my study in a world-famous university to broaden my horizons to better fit my future post.
To sum up, actions speak louder than words. No matter how hard the future road is, I’ll spare no efforts to make my dream into the reality.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
