About 15 years ago, Andrew, a businessman and cyclist, was riding his bike, when he thought about a friend’s 12-year-old son. The boy had never known the happiness of biking because he suffered from a brain disease that often causes balance problems.
When he got home, Andrew went online and found a three-wheel recumbent bike (卧式自行车) with a seat belt, perfect for a child with balance problems. Soon the boy was cycling around the street with his friends, having fun and getting exercise. His father could never forget the smile on his face when he saw his son communicating with other kids.
That smile started a charity foundation. Funded by donations, the group works with certain clinics to find children who can benefit from owning an adaptive bike. They try to help make each bike meet the special needs of the children. The bikes are very expensive, but for kids who are lucky enough to get one, they are a life changer.
“We worked with a 14-year-old child who has walking difficulty,” says Andrew. “She spent most days on the sofa watching TV. Soon after she got her bike, she was training for a cycling competition. In a magazine interview, she said that she always knew there was an athlete in herself!”
So far, the foundation has given away 450 bikes, and that is just a start. Andrew says, “I do a lot of things and run a lot of companies, but getting these kids their bikes is the most important thing that I do.”
4. Why did Andrew buy the bike for his friend’s son?
A. To help cure his disease. B. To prepare him for a game.

As Paralympic athletes (残奥会运动员) have been setting new records on Earth, more than 30 people from the UK have become members of a project, which aims to show how people with disabilities can become astronauts.
The Parastronaut Project is looking for people who are suitable to fly into space but haven’t had a chance because of physical disabilities. The project wants to develop something that can make it easier for people with disabilities to travel into space. “If there is one thing we have learned by working on International Space Station, it is that there is great value in diversity,” said a recent report. “We can benefit from their exceptional experience and their ability to adapt to special environments.”
The project worked with the International Paralympic Committee to understand the different types of challenges that people may face. Then it developed a “traffic light” system to determine what types of disabilities are safe for space travel, which ones aren’t, and which ones could be made safe for space travel with certain changes.
Dr. Irene said, “There are some disabilities that could be beneficial for space travel.” For example, people under 1.3 meters tall were chosen because being taller can be a disadvantage in a narrow spacecraft.
There have been 257 applicants from different places. They will enter a long selection process, including tests, interviews, and medical assessments, before successful candidates are announced in October, 2022.
12. What does the underlined word “exceptional” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Similar. B. Boring. C. Extraordinary. D. Tough.
13. What is the purpose of the “traffic light” system?
A. To provide tools for difficult environments.
B. To highlight the importance of traffic safety.
C. To offer instructions when people travel into space.
D. To identify what types of disabilities are safe for space travel.
14. What is Dr. Irene’s attitude towards some disabilities for space travel?
A. Doubtful. B. Concerned. C. Positive. D. Curious.
15. In which section of a magazine may this text appear?

Paul’s Birthday Surprise
Paul woke up feeling very happy. Today was his birthday. Paul was now 5 years old. At breakfast, Dad poured some milk into a bowl for Paul and handed him a piece of bread. “See you later, Paul.” Dad said. Dad took his lunch with him in a hurry and ran out the door. Paul ate a bite of bread, feeling upset. Dad always made him a special pancake with delicious chocolate chips. Did Dad forget his birthday?
Paul looked across the table at his baby brother Tom, who was only one year old. He needed help to do everything. Tom banged the table and laughed happily when Mum put some baby food into his mouth. “Mum, can we go to the park today?” Paul asked, with his eyes shining with eagerness. Mum looked over Tom’s head to look out the kitchen window. “I don’t think so,” she said, “it looks like it will rain.” Hearing this, Paul was buried in disappointment. He wanted his birthday to be special and memorable. However, everything wasn’t going in the way as he had expected.
After breakfast, Mum had to give Tom a bath. Tom was an untidy eater, with food and milk sticking to his face and hair. Mum put him in the bath tub and began to scrub (擦洗). She reached for the shampoo (洗发水), but it was empty. “Paul, please come here!” Paul got to the bathroom and Mum handed him Tom’s favorite rubber duck, saying to Paul, “Please play with your little brother until I get a new shampoo bottle.”

【答案】 With the rubber duck in hand, Paul said impatiently, “Okay, Mum!” He passed the rubber duck to Tom, who grinned with delight at the sight of the toy. Tom gently pushed the duck across the surface of the water as if it were swimming. Then he squeezed the duck, with water splashing on Paul’s face. Almost immediately, Paul began to “fight” back, and it soon turned into a “water fight”. Then came happy laughter from where they were, bathing them in extreme joy.
Mum came back to the bathroom with a new bottle and a birthday gift. “Happy Birthday, Paul!” Looking at the gift, Paul screamed with joy, “Oh, it is the very birthday gift that I have dreamed of for long and I only told Dad once. Thanks, Mum.” Suddenly a tiny hand seized Paul and handed the rubber duck to him. “For me?” Paul asked surprisedly. Without hesitation, Tom nodded his head wildly. Overwhelmed with excitement, Paul said to Mum, “Tom gave me his favorite toy!” “What a special birthday present!” Mum laughed, giving the brothers a tight hug.
