CrazyCreative Traditions in Schools
Here are a few schools' crazycreative traditions that will probably have you wish to go there so you could celebrate in all the graduation fun. Learn about them all in the below.
Attire (服装) and Flowers at College of Charleston
You fashionista will love this one. During the December ceremony, women wear black dresses and men wear black tuxedos (无尾礼服). During the May ceremony, women wear white dresses and men wear summer tuxedos. It's also been a tradition since the 1930s to carry flowers onto the stage:women carry bouquets of six red roses in a red bow and men wear a single red rose boutonniere (胸花). So classy!
Hoop Rolling at Wellesley College
This allwomen's college tradition was originally held on May Day, but it's now held in April. The purpose is to allow students to essentially leave all their worries behind and just participate in some fun games outdoors. Back in the day, it was said that the winner of the hoop rolling race was the first to be married, and in the 1980s she would be the first to be a CEO. Nowadays, the winner would be the first to achieve her own happiness ...that is, after being thrown into Lake Waban by all her classmates.
Fabric and Green Grad Recycling Program at the University of New Hampshire
You'll absolutely love this tradition. UNH's vendor provides wrinkleresistant caps and gowns made of recycled plastic bottles. Graduates then have the opportunity to donate their gowns to be cleaned and reused. Graduates are still able to keep their caps and tassels as keepsakes, all while helping to save the environment.
21.If you want to participate in the December ceremony, you can choose ________.
A.College of Charleston
B.Wellesley College
C.University of New Hampshire
D.Oxford University
22.Hoop Rolling at Wellesley College is aimed at enabling the students to ________.
A.be a CEO B.have fun
C.achieve happiness D.be married

The boy sat on his chair, with his hands above the keyboard. He thought about what to write.
He recalled that the competition deadline was merely a week away. But he still had not even started on his piece. He looked at the brochure again. “WRITING COMPETITION!” the title read. His mom had encouraged him to enter the writing competition, and now he was taking it on as his personal task for the holidays.
As the boy reflected on his previous writing efforts, he realized how hopeless his task of winning was. Every story he ever wrote was based on other stories. He had little imagination, and unfortunately, imagination was the key to writing.
Suddenly, he had a brainwave. This time, he came up with an original and imaginative story.
The words shot towards him like a storm of leaves. Words were coming easily, flowing through him, faster than he could type. He typed faster than he ever had before. He continued to type, amazed how easy writing this story was. The boy could not stop writing. He looked at the word count and saw the number “248” staring right back at him. He was not even halfway yet.
Then he heard his mother's call of saying time for bed. He continued writing the piece, ignoring her. He had to make up for the time he had lost in thinking about a topic to write.
Finally, he finished. The word count now read “498”.
“Perfect,” he thought, “just under the word limit.” He knew this was the story that would win.
He went to the website and searched for the competition. He found the page but there was no “Enter” button.
Confused, he then reread the page again. It read COMPETITION CLOSED.
24.What caused the boy to take part in the writing competition?
A.A new computer.
B.The prize money.
C.His own interest.
D.His mom's encouragement.
25.How did the boy finish his earlier writing?
A.His mom helped him.
B.He copied others' ideas.
C.His friends assisted him.
D.He used his imagination.
26.Why did the boy delay his writing?
A.Because he was terribly lazy.
B.Because he didn't know what to write.
C.Because he wasn't confident.
D.Because he read too many stories.
27.Which might be the maximum word limit for each entry?
A.100. B.250.
C.500. D.1,000.
C
Many of us were delighted to learn that a high school senior Kwasi Enin was accepted to all eight Ivy (常青藤) League universities. To our surprise,he wasn't excited as expected, but appeared extra calm.He announced that he would revisit the universities to find the best suitable in music or medicine. He also wanted to compare their financial aid packages.
Kwasi's success story is rare, but his reaction is not. After the admission letters arrive at home, students have 30 days to really think about what kind of school would help them grow as a person, which school would best prepare them for the future, and at which school they would be happiest. And they also have to think about whether they can afford the school they choose.
But how to answer the questions about which school is the best suitable university? Some young people are attracted to large universities with great school spirit and a list of offerings. But besides those advantages, many of these universities focus on graduate work and research, with undergraduates(本科生) taught mostly by parttime instructors.Others are attracted to smaller boarding schools with discussionbased classes. But some of these schools will have much limitation for students who want a highenergy city life experience.
Many students today seem to think they should pick the university where they will get the diploma that will help them get the most highly paid job. This is a sad misunderstanding of what a college education should provide.A good college education should prepare them to overcome any difficulty and thrive in society. It helps them to form the habit of creative mind and spirit that will continue to develop far beyond their university years. So when you choose college, you should consider if it is filled with useful learning to help create new spaces for different possibilities of growth.

30.Which of the following can best explain the underlined word “thrive” in Paragraph 4?
A.Fail. B.Succeed.
C.Research. D.Work.

Pearl Fryar knew he wanted to do something unique with the farmland he bought in South Carolina. He wanted to win the local garden club's “Yard of the Month” award.
Fryar didn't have the money to purchase new trees, so he began by using bushes and shrubs that a local nursery had thrown away — plants that looked dead to most people.
Because he worked at a can factory during the day, Fryar often tended his garden at night. Neighbors got used to seeing him stand on the ladder, cutting his steadily growing bushes. The shrubs began to take on different shapes. As the years went by, the creations became more delicate. Fryar began planting trees and using zip ties, coat hangers, PVC pipe, and even his wife's old stockings to achieve the forms he wanted. “He has a way of handling plants to do things he wants them to by training, bending, wiring, and clipping,” said a neighbor.
Many professional gardeners are amazed by what Fryar has been able to accomplish. Some plants which wouldn't survive in the South thrived under his care.
Fryar's attention to detail and his willingness to work hard have made him a local hero. He was the first African American to win “Yard of the Month” from the local garden club.
Fryar's garden now includes about 400 species of plants and 150 different plant sculptures. A box for donations can be found on the property, but giving is optional. Fryar welcomes people who can't afford to pay. He understands. He's been there. “You can be somebody,” he tells students who visit the garden. “Show me anyone who works at anything with a passion and has patience, and they're going to be successful. Be strong enough not to let the barriers in life stop you.”
32.How did Fryar make his garden unique?
A.He made the plants into different shapes.
B.He bought new trees from a local nursery.
C.He used his professional knowledge.
D.He asked his neighbors to cut his bushes.
33.What does the underlined word “thrived” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Died away. B.Became weak.
C.Faded slowly. D.Grew strong.
34.What made Fryar win the award?

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a Sunday afternoon I was waiting for the music hall to open. I went there to get in with my artist friends and set up to paint during the show to let people know that we were good at painting. They were running late so I had to wait for them on the grass next to the parking lot. After some time, I just pulled out a canvas(画布)4 inches by 4 inches and a few tubes of paint, preparing my task of painting for later. Some music was being played from a car parked nearby and I felt really comfortable for such wonderful atmosphere.
I certainly wasn't working on a masterpiece but I was soon absorbed into the work.I became interested in painting when I was very young. As I was painting, I noticed a shadow on the grass by me, and looked up into a man's face.He was just beside me, standing there. He was a little unsteady on his feet and smelled lightly of alcohol. This was not a surprise in the neighborhood because many people would watch me painting, which of course made me a little proud. He watched me painting and I looked up and smiled a few times. He seemed to know painting well and later he told me he painted when he was young and many people thought his paintings were wonderful.
“I used to be an artist,” he told me seriously.I sat up, pulled a canvas 16 inches by 20 inches from my bag with some extra brushes and said,“I bet you still are.Why not paint one now?” I said and gave him the tools for him to paint.
He looked at me, perhaps thinking I would laugh at him. Then he dropped his bag next to me.He sat down and started to paint some mountains, the trees not far away from them and an eagle feather(羽毛).His painting was really wonderful and I praised him for what he had drawn. He was happy to share his story.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Slowly he started telling me about his life.
When he finished, he handed me the painting and we talked again.
