1. Lead in

  Show the pictures about Thanksgiving. Ask “Can you guess what festival it is?.” Students may guess out. Then show the pictures of Thanksgiving. Play the cartoon about Thanksgiving introduction. Say “Today we’ll learn something about this festival.”

2. Presentation

(1)  New words.

1. Show the pictures. Learn the new words of Thanksgiving and flag. The letter “a” in “Thanksgiving” has the same sound as that in “flag, that, bag”. “Day” in “Thanksgiving Day” can be omitted. Learn the phrases “Flag Day, fly the flag, national flag”. Thanksgiving and Flag Day are both American festivals.
2. Show the pictures. Learn the new words of fly and special. There are three Chinese meanings of “fly”. Go over the phrases of “fly the flag, fly a kite”. The adverbs of special is specially. “Specia”l is put before nouns, like a special day.
3. Show the picture of a meal. Learn the word “meal”. “Ea” in “meal, meat, east” has the same sound. Its phrase is “have meals”. Look at the meal of Thanksgiving, give an example sentence. Show another three  traditional food of Thanksgiving to get students to learn about.
4. Show the pictures. Learn the new words of sound and footballl. “Sound” is both a noun and a verb. There are three phrases of sound, and they have the similar meanings, such sound good, sound great and sound nice. “Football” is also a composite word like “Thanksgiving”. Remind students to notice that it has two meanings. Its phrase is “play football”. Give two pictures of football game.

(2)  Lead in. Show the picture of Part 1. Ask “What festival does Sam and Daming talk about?” Students can guess it’s Thanksgiving. Then ask “What do people say on that day?” Students are interested in it.

(3)  Watch and answer. Watch the video then have students answer the question. They say “thank you” for their food, family and friends.

(4)  Watch and repeat the dialog with the video.

(5)  Key points. Learn the use of preposition of “on”. It is used before the festival, what day and the date. Give examples to help understand. “Thank you” is equal to “Thanks”. Learn the phrases “Thank you for sth” and “Thank you to sb”. Show two pictures to practice them. Give the example sentences.

(6)  Retell. Retell part 1 by completing the dialog.

(7)  Act out the dialog in groups. Then choose the excellent groups to praise.

(8)  Lead in. Show the first picture of Part 2. Ask “What day is tomorrow?” Students can answer it according to the picture. Then ask when Flag Day is. Students can answer it according to the calendar. Teacher asks again, “What do people do on that day?” Show another picture of Part 2. Ask “What American festival do they talk about?” Students can answer it according to the picture. Then ask “What do people do on that day?”

(9)  Watch and answer. Watch the video then have students answer the question. Show three pictures to help understand Thanksgiving.

(10)  Choose. Choose the right answers according to the dialog.

(11)  Watch and repeat the dialog with the video.

(12)  Key points.

1. Learn the phrase of “Flag Day”. Introduce what people do on this day. Then play the videos of the origins of the US national flag and Chinese flag. Get students to know about the differences between China and western countries.
2. Learn the useful expressions. The structure of asking for more information is “Can you tell me more about...?”. “Tell sb abut sth” is often used in life. Know the difference between American and America. “Sound” is put before adjective. “Big” in the two phrases has different meanings. At last, give a dialog to help understand these phrase
3. In this unit, there is a phrase “watch a football game”, so explain the different use of “look, see and watch”. Notice their Chinese meanings and common useful expressions
4. The structure of asking the festival’s culture is “What do you do on ...?”. In Part 2, there are many pronouns. Give a form of personal pronouns and possessive pronouns. Introduce their different uses . Give the sentences with pronouns of Part 2 to help understand.

(13)  Phrases. Sum up the useful expressions of this unit. Pay attention to the pink words.

(14)  Retell. Retell Part 2 by completing the dialog.

(15)  Act out the dialog in groups. Then choose the excellent groups to praise.

3. Practice 

(1)  Choose.

1. Choose the right boat for the phrase. This part can help students grasp what people do on the two festivals.
2. Fill in the blanks with the right prepositions.

(2)  Fill in the passage with the right words. The passage is about Part 2.

This part can help students understand the dialog better.

(3)  Listen and say. Listen to the recording and repeat with it.

(4)  Recite. Revise the phrases. First translate the English into Chinese.

Then speak English according to the Chinese meanings.

(5)  Introduce. Show the postcard of Christmas. Introduce the festival

with the help of the pictures. Teach students to write the composition of “What’s your favourite festival?” First let students write by themselves. Then give a model composition to get students to copy.

(6)  Sentence game. Show the pictures of these three American festivals.

Students ask and answer one by one according to the given sentences.

(7)  Guess the festival. One student introduce the festival, and the other

guess what festival it is.

4. Know

1. Enjoy the video of the origin of Thanksgiving.
2. Enjoy the video of the English introduction of Thanksgiving.
3. Show the pictures. Educate students to say" thank you" to our family and friends! We should be thankful for everything in our life!

5. Summary

Sum up the important activities of three American festivals.

   In this lesson, through the study of the words, phrases and the dialog, students can introduce three American festivals. Students can use the key words and phrases to freely. And they have learned other grammar knowledge like the uses of prepositions and pronouns. They learn about the different uses of “look, see and watch”. Through describing the pictures, they can use key points and structures to express themselves in the true situations.It's important to educate students to say" thank you" to our family and friends! We should be grateful for everything in our life!
