Sme Ohi high schl students have becme winners in a natinal cntest (竞赛) after inventing a mbile phne app that helps needy families find lcal fd pantries (公益食品仓库).
And smeday the teens, wh are students at Rss High Schl in Rss Twnship, may be selling the app t fd pantries and fd banks acrss America.
The app was created as part f a cmputer science class — crdinated (协调) by Butler Tech career schl system at the high schl. Three students, Jacb Kahmann, Gunner Nnnamaker and Kyle Inderhees, recently were visited by Cngressman Warren Davidsn, wh praised their wrk. Davidsn lauded the teens fr creating “this app t set the standard fr efficient fd cllectin and distributin (分发).”
Butler Tech IT Instructr Tm O’Neill said the students’ app includes characteristics that help users lcate the nearest fd pantry and imprve fd cllectin prcesses, and that the natinal cntest prvides a real-life learning chance fr his students.
The students are cntinuing t make additins t the app and are wrking n turning it int a prduct, said O’Neill, wh in recent years has helped many Rss High Schl teens win natinal hnrs fr their cmputer-science-based inventins.
“The teachers and students in the Rss Schl District cntinue t amaze me with their future-thinking and creatin,” said Superintendent Sctt Gates. “Our students are nt nly thinking abut careers, they are thinking abut prblems they want t change, slve r imprve. The app that was created will make serving a ppulatin in need mre efficient.”

Electric scter (踏板车) cmpanies are turning t technlgy t try t reduce accidents and injuries amng riders and pedestrians ( 行人). The prblem has becme s serius that cuntries including Singapre, France and Spain have banned e-scters n pedestrian walkways. A study f mre than 100 riders surveyed in Washingtn, D. C., fund that nearly three in five were injured while riding n a sidewalk, even in places where it was banned.
Swedish peratr Vi — which has mre than 6 millin scter riders acrss 50 Eurpean cities — has wrked with Dublin startup Luna t develp a system f cameras and sensrs that can make ut what surface a scter is riding n, as well as the presence f nearby pedestrians.
The technlgy wrks in real time. A small camera fixed n the e-scter films the lane ( 车道) ahead, while an algrithm ( 计算程序) — trained n thusands f pictures and vides — makes ut the surrunding envirnment. With this infrmatin, the scter can be prgrammed t react in a number f ways. “It culd slw dwn its speed as the rider ges up n a sidewalk; it culd reduce the speed if it discvers pedestrians n the pathway ... It culd give warnings t bth the rider and the surrundings if the technlgy discvers behavir that we feel is unsafe,” says Shahin Ghazinuri, Vice President f Hardware Engineering at Vi.
Exactly hw Vi’s scters will react is yet t be decided, he adds, and will depend n results frm a year-lng trial f the technlgy in Nrthamptn, England. During the first stage f the trial, e-scters fitted with Luna’s technlgy were ridden by Vi emplyees. Luna CEO Andrew Fleury expects, in the secnd stage, the scters will be rlled ut acrss Nrthamptn fr public use.
Other e-scter cmpanies are develping similar systems. Alexandre Santacreu, the authr f the Internatinal Transprt Frum’s 2020 reprt n micrmbility, says that while the technlgy develped by e-scter cmpanies is prmising, addressing city infrastructure ( 基础建设) and mtr vehicle speed limits shuld cme first. Accidents amng riders and pedestrians ften “happen in places where scter riders d nt feel safe n the streets and they g nt the walkways,” he says. T deal with this, cities must intrduce mre cycle rutes and wrk n slwing dwn cars, says Santacreu.
    28. What is the prblem mentined in the first paragraph?
    A. Many cuntries have banned e-scters.
    B. E-scters have caused a lt f accidents.
    C. Few e-scter riders fllw all traffic laws.
    D. The number f e-scters is rising rapidly.
    29. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
    A. Hw the new technlgy wrks.
    B. The testing f the new technlgy.
    C. Why the new technlgy was develped.
    D. The disadvantage f the new technlgy.
    30. What can we learn abut the new technlgy’s first-stage trial?
    A. It lasted ne year.
    B. It had mixed success.
    C. It was carried ut by Vi’s emplyees.
    D. It was held withut Luna’s cperatin.
    31. What des Alexandre Santacreu cnsider mst imprtant?
    A. Slwing dwn e-scters.
    B. Imprving the new technlgy.
    C. Prviding lanes fr e-scter riders.
    D. Banning e-scter riders n streets.
    D
When Dmitry Ivanvsky was still a student in 1887 he began his wrk n the Tbacc Msaic Disease (烟草花叶病). The disease appeared t take hld in tbacc plants early n in their grwth cycle, causing green and brwn msaics n the affected leaves. Ivanvsky first repeated and cnfirmed experiments perfrmed by Adlf Mayer in which he tk diseased leaves, extracted their sap (the liquid in a plant that carries fd t all its parts), and injected (注入) the sap int healthy plants. Up t 80% f the healthy plants then became infected in these experiments.
Ivanvsky riginally thught the disease was bacterial, and s he designed an experiment in which the diseased sap f a tbacc plant was filtered (过滤) thrugh a Chamberland filter-candle which culd filter ut bacteria and wrks much like a mdern water purifier. After filtering the sap, Ivanvsky injected it int healthy tbacc leaves. When the healthy plants began t shw signs f infectin, Ivanvsky prved bacterial filtering f diseased sap did nt prevent the disease, and thus the infective creatures had t be unlike any bacteria that they had seen befre.
Additinally, Ivanvsky prvided evidence that the creature that was infecting tbacc plants was mre f a particle ( 颗 粒) than a liquid. He thught that the disease was mre likely caused by either a living creature r a large mlecule (分子). In his 1902 research paper he cncluded: The sap f diseased plants was infectius; when the infected sap is heated, it is n lnger infectius (heat changes the structure and characteristics f RNA and virus prteins, essentially killing them, s this makes sense); infectin thrugh bacteria may cause the disease.
It wasn’t until advancements in technlgy in the early-t-mid 20th century allwed scientists t take the first images f viruses that we were able t identify the Tbacc msaic virus, and thus separated it frm ther living creatures such as bacteria and fungi. But it is because f the early wrk f Ivanvsky and Mayer scientists are able t understand viruses and viral diseases and cntinue the search fr life-saving vaccines fr fatal diseases such as COVID-19.
    32. What did Adlf Mayer’s experiments prve?
    A. The sap f diseased tbacc plants is infectius.
    B. The msaics n infected plants are green r brwn.
    C. The disease affects tbacc plants at an early stage.
    D. The infective creature threatens mst tbacc plants.
    33. Why did Ivanvsky use a Chamberland filter-candle in his experiment?
    A. T put much pressure n infected leaves.
    B. T add sme pure water t the infected sap.
    C. T filter infected fd in the tbacc leaves.
    D. T remve the infective bacteria in the sap.
    34. Which f the fllwing des the authr supprt?
    A. Filtering the diseased sap can prevent the disease.
    B. The infected sap is n lnger infectius when heated.
    C. Sme kind f large mlecules might cause the disease.
    D. The unknwn creature was mre f a particle than a liquid.
    35. What was the significance f Ivanvsky’s wrk?
    A. It shwed the differences between viruses and bacteria.
    B. It tk the first images f the Tbacc msaic virus.
    C. It made later identificatin f the virus pssible.
    D. It led t an effective life-saving vaccine.
