    As my plane landed in Pamplna, Spain, I culdn’t help thinking, “I’m crazy abut ging abrad and taking classes in Spanish.” My biggest fear was whether I wuld be able t cmmunicate with Spanish speakers, and hw I wuld be able t adapt t a culture that is different in s many ways frm American culture.
    Having attended classes in Spanish and talking with native students fr ver a mnth nw, it gt better. When I first started, it was easy t get frustrated when I didn’t understand parts f what my prfessr was saying, r t feel embarrassed when I had t ask smene t repeat themselves many times. Hwever, peple ften plitely crrected me when I made a mistake, and als ffered supprt and wrds f encuragement. And it helped me reach my biggest piece f advice t anyne facing the same fear: t frce yurself t speak as much as pssible.
    Anther challenge I faced was culture shck when I arrived in Spain. After recgnizing that these cmmunities ften lack access t peple wh have the language skills and cultural knwledge t help them, Haridss gt t wrk creating an app that clses the gap.
    “I have always lved the idea f using business as a frce fr gd,” Haridss says. “Thrugh entrepreneurship (创办企业), I can make a difference t cmmunities that need help in a sustainable (可持续的) way.” This passin fr entrepreneurship, cupled with her interest in glbal cultures, first led Haridss t NC State University. “NC State University has a great dual degree (双学位) prgram that allwed me t earn tw degrees in fur years while als giving me the pprtunity t study abrad,” Haridss says.
    Brn in Chennai, India, Haridss mved t Cary, Nrth Carlina at the age f three. She grew up speaking bth English and Tamil, and ften acted as a translatr fr her grandparents when they visited the United States. Hwever, her experience translating didn’t end there — while studying abrad during her junir year in Argentina and Spain, Haridss had pprtunities t use her Spanish language skills t help thers. “I was surrunded by ther students wh culdn’t speak Spanish,” Haridss says. “I was able t help them rder at restaurants, pay their cellphne bills, and even get haircuts. The rle f language in cnnecting peple began t inspire me.”
    After returning t the United States, Haridss’ eyes were pened t the need fr translatrs amng immigrant and refugee ppulatins seeking resurces — and Sl was brn. The web app allws peple in new places t enter the language they need help with and the amunt f time they might need ne. Within 60 secnds, the app cnnects a user with an interpreter wh can help. “These cmmunities already face s many barriers and we dn’t want t put anther ne in their way,” Haridss explains.
