But her lve fr the wrk has encuraged Meng t cntinue. Even fr an experienced master like Meng, finishing a piece requires several days r even a few mnths.
“These experiences may smetimes discurage me, but the lve fr Shu embridery always gives me mtivatin t cntinue,” said Meng.
Meng has als ppularised the culture f Shu embridery when the traditin was at risk f declining.
Many cheap prducts are made by mdern machines. In 2005, the factry Meng wrked in was frced t clse. T make a living and pass alng the traditinal technique, Meng rented a small space f 10 square metres t teach Shu embridery skills t the kids and yung peple.

These structures are knwn as the Fujian Tulu. Thrughut histry, their residents have mstly been Hakka - migrants in suthern China wh riginated frm lands next t the Yellw River. Ppulatin pressures created cnflicts between the Hakka and their neighburs, s they built their hmes t duble as frtificatin (防御) structures.
Walls are up t 5 feet thick and can reach 60 feet high. Defensive features include irn gates, undergrund escape tunnels, tiled rfs, a water well, and a backup stck f grains and livestck in the event f a lengthy cnflict. The buildings, usually three t fur stries, are symmetrical (对称的) in their shapes — this means that in the event f a cnflict there are n blind spts.
While tulu translates as “earthen building” in Chinese, the cnstructin materials are made up f far mre than just mud. The fundatins f the structures are made f lcal river stnes and the walls are made f fine mud surced frm rice fields.
