Gesturing with hands while speaking is a cmmn human behaviur, but n ne knws why we d it. Nw, a grup f researchers reprts that gesturing adds emphasis t speech — but nt in the way researchers had thught.
Gesturing while speaking, r “talking with yur hands”, is cmmn arund the wrld. Many cmmunicatins researchers believe that gesturing is either dne t stress imprtant pints, r t explain specific ideas, which yu can think f as the “drawing in the air”. But there are ther pssibilities. Fr example, it culd be that gesturing, by changing the size and shape f the chest, lungs and vcal muscles, affects the sund f a persn's speech.
Researchers decided t test whether this idea was true, r just s much hand waving. The team had vlunteers mve their dminant hand (优势手) as if they were cutting wd, while cntinuusly saying “a” as in “cinema”. They were instructed t keep the “a” sund as steady as they culd.

Rather than just using yur chest muscles t prduce air flw fr speech, mving yur arms while yu speak can add vice emphasis. And yu can hear smene's mtins, even when they're trying nt t let yu.
“Sme language researchers dn't like this idea, because they want language t be all abut cmmunicating the cntents f yur mind, rather than the state f yur bdy. But we think that gestures are allwing the vice signal t carry additinal infrmatin abut bdily tensin and mtin. It's infrmatin f anther kind,” says UCnn psychlgist and directr f the Centre fr the Eclgical Study f Perceptin and Actin James Dixn, ne f the authrs f the paper.

Will COVID19 Kill the Handshake?
The handshake might date back t the 14th century, when knights and sldiers wuld extend their unclenched (松开的) right hands twards each ther in greeting t shw that they were carrying n weapns.
1 Or rather, its tendency fr picking up and hlding nt germs frm plluted surfaces, r frm ur wn eyes r nses when we have certain illnesses. Thse germs can then be transferred int the hands f the peple we greet, while we can pick up their germs. We then will prbably tuch ur wn eyes r nses r muths, ptentially sickening urselves and restarting the cycle.

COVID19 is a real threat, and we shuldn't take the warning lightly. We may, indeed, need t keep ur hands t urselves fr the time being. But we're nt ready t send handshakes int the dustbin f histry. Humans lng fr making a physical cnnectin with friends. Fr nw, perhaps, a regretful smile and nd might wrk as a shared acknwledgment. 5

D. After all, ur friendly intentins were nt t infect r be infected by thers.

F. We're being drilled in handwashing techniques as if we were all secndgraders.
G. The French have been advised t abandn the familiar kiss n the cheek greeting.
