Every time we get n a plane, we’re asked t either turn ff ur phnes r change them t flight mde—it’s fr “security reasns”. But accrding t The Cnversatin website, having t turn ur phnes ff n a plane is “a service issue, nt a safety ne”. When we speak n ur phnes in the air, they can cause interference t the aircraft’s radis and pilts can hear this interference in their headphnes. “It’s the same nise yu’ll be familiar with, if yu put yur mbile t clse t a speaker,” the Mirrr nted. “It is nt safety-critical, but is annying fr sure.” Thugh speaking n a phne during a flight isn’t dangerus, frm the viewpint f service, it isn’t still a gd idea.
When we make r receive a call n the grund, we cnnect t a cell twer that deals with all calls within an 80-kilmeter radius(半径). As we mve frm place t place we are “handed n” t different cell twers. As US scientist Sven Bilen explains, fr this system t wrk, there are “built-in” expectatins: There shuldn’t be t many “handffs” and peple shuldn’t be traveling faster than car speeds.“Of curse, phne users shuld be clse t the grund.” he added. If we were t make phne calls while we flew, hwever, nne f these expectatins wuld be met. And even wrse, ur cellphnes wuld stp wrking.
But nw things are beginning t change. If we still can’t speak during a flight, we can use ther phne functins. Fr example, Airbus A330 f Emirates Airlines has inflight WiFi t make passengers send and receive shrt messages in the air. In the future, as Bilen pints ut, it may be pssible fr air travelers t make and receive calls freely. The breakthrugh culd be “pic cells”, which are small cell twers n the plane itself. There wuld n lnger be cnnectins made between phnes and the grund and therefre there wuld be n danger f disruptin t phne service.
One day, perhaps, we will be chatting in the air as much as we chat n the grund.
4.Why are passengers required t turn ff their phnes n a plane?
A.Because using phnes will pse a threat t their safety.
B.Because using phnes may cause annying nise t pilts.
C.Because turning ff phnes can ensure passengers a better service.
D.Because phnes will fail t be cnnected t the cell twer when in the air.
5.Hw many “build-in” expectatins are mentined by Sven Bilen t help make a phne call?
A.One.B.Tw.
C.Three.D.Fur.
6.What can we infer frm the passage?
A.Peple shuld travel slwer than airplane speeds t make a phne call successfully.
B.Passengers are likely t make r receive phne calls freely n a plane in the future.
C.“Pic cells” has been applied by airlines t prvide passengers with gd phne service.
D.Passengers can receive calls n Airbus A330 f Emirates Airlines with the help f inflight WiFi.
7.Where is the text mst likely frm?
A.A science fictin.B.A travel jurnal.
C.A guidebk.D.A magazine.

Plenty f harvests f crn and ther majr crps rely n a mysterius phenmenn knwn as hybrid vigr(杂交活力). When highly naturally-brn varieties are crssed, their next generatins are taller, hardier, and bear mre grain. Researchers reprt that this vigr is smehw influenced by micrbes (微生物) in the sil, perhaps thrugh a plant’s immune system.
Charles Darwin was ne f the first researchers t describe hybrid vigr. In the early 20th century, bilgists began t apply this effect t agriculture by creating naturally-brn parent plants that prduced hybrid seeds. By the 1940s, almst every farmer in the United States was planting hybrid crn, and the harvests multiplied.
Bilgists have prpsed several theries abut the cause f hybrid vigr, but n definitive explanatin has emerged.
Maggie Wagner, plant bilgist at the University f Kansas, and her clleagues wndered whether micrbes might be it invlved. Last year, Wagner and her clleagues fund an interesting clue in a field study. They discvered that the leaves and rts f hybrid crn had micrbial cmmunities that are different frm thse living n naturally-brn varieties f crn. “Smething abut being a hybrid makes a plant interact differently with micrbes,” Wagner says. It culd be that the naturally-brn crn’s immune systems react mre actively t beneficial micrbes, cmprmising their grwth. Alternatively, hybrid plants may be better able t defend against weak pathgens(病原体) in the sil.
Wagner says the finding highlights the need fr plant grwers t match the hybrid crps t the micrbial cmmunities with which they live. The findings help scientists realize the imprtance f understanding the rle f sil micrbes in making agriculture mre prductive and sustainable, “This hlds great prmise.”
8.Hw did peple use the effect f hybrid vigr in agriculture?
A.By prducing naturally-brn parent plants that bre hybrid seeds.
B.By creating naturally-brn parent lines that prduced hybrid vigr.
C.By prviding mre micrbes cmmunities that culd prduce mre seeds.
D.By lking fr hybrid parent Plants in the field that prduced hybrid seeds.
9.What can we knw frm Paragraph 4?
A.Hybrid plants react wrse t weak pathgens in the sil.
B.Wagner cnnected hybrid vigr with micrbial cmmunities.
C.Being naturally-brn makes a plant interact differently with micrbes.
D.Hybrid crn and naturally-brn crn have similar micrbial cmmunities.
10.What effect wuld Wagner’s finding have?
A.Making farmers knw what t grw t resist certain diseases
B.Helping scientist realize the imprtance f spreading sil micrbes.
C.Shwing the significance f assciating sil micrbes with specific crps.
D.Highlighting the need fr plant grwers t find mre micrbial cmmunities.
11.What may be the best title fr the text?
A.Hybrid Crn: a Duble-edged Swrd
B.Hw Can Farmers Grw Hybrid Crps?
C.Hybrid Vigr: a Mysterius Phenmenn
D.What Rle D Sil Micrbes Play in the Harvests f crn?

8.A 细节理解题。根据第二段“In the early 20th century, bilgists began t apply this effect t agriculture by creating naturally-brn parent plants that prduced hybrid seeds.”可知,人们通过创造能产生杂合种子的自然生长的母本植物。故选A项。
9.B 细节理解题。根据第四段“Maggie Wagner, plant bilgist at the University f Kansas, and her clleagues wndered whether micrbes might be it invlved.”可知,此处讲Wagner对杂合优势与土壤微生物可能存在某种关系的推测,而下文“They discvered that the leaves and rts f hybrid crn had micrbial cmmunities that are different frm thse living n naturally-brn varieties f crn.”则印证了这种推测,证实杂合优势和土壤微生物相关。故选B项。
10.C 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Wagner says the finding highlights the need fr plant grwers t match the hybrid crps t the micrbial cmmunities with which they live.”
