香港观鸟会成立于1957年，是唯一一个旨在欣赏及保育香港鸟类及其自然生态的本地民间组织。2002年，香港观鸟会更被认可成为一個公共性质的慈善机构。目前香港观鸟会有十一位全职工作人员，而观鸟会的义工在带领观鸟活动、图书管理及邮寄刊物等方面给予重要的支持。另外，会员人数正不断增加中，目前已有超过1,900位本地及海外会员。
除了定期出版会讯和《香港鸟类年报》外，香港观鸟会还举办野外观鸟活动及室内讲座。过去曾协助修建米埔浮桥新观鸟亭、更新《香港鸟类名录》以及于1999年设立 “香港观鸟会香港中国自然保育基金”， 支持国內观鸟者及鸟类学专家进行观鸟推广或鸟类研究的工作。为了推动香港市民赏鸟爱鸟，香港观鸟会多年来与超过二十多个团体举办活动和定期举办不同程度的观鸟班。除此之外, 该会还进行鸟类调查及研究、管理重要鸟类生境、协助成立及发展內地观鸟会等。
