Lots of translations of classic lines were made by Xu Yuanchong, a professor of translation at Peking University. On June 17, 2021, Mr. Xu died at the age of 100 in Beijing.
Xu began his translating career in the 1930s and developed a life-long interest in introducing foreign literature to China and ancient Chinese poetry to the world. He practiced translation in line with his belief that “the aim of cultural exchanges is to be good for both sides”, and made a great effort to convey(表达) the beauty of sense, sound and form in a literary work using another language.
Xu went to the National Southwestern Associated University to study English in 1938, where his love for translation started. Xu gave himself over to literary translation and did it for more than 60 years, mainly focusing on translations of ancient Chinese poetry. At the age of 93, he started translating Shakespeare. Before he died, he was still busy translating at the speed of 1,000 words a day.
Xu was widely known in China as “the first person able to translate Chinese, English and French classics”. He published more than 150 translation works in Chinese, English, and French, including The Book of Poetry, Selected Poems of Du Fu, Selected Poems of Li Bai, The Red and the Black and Madame Bovary.
In 2010, he received the lifetime achievement award from the Translators Association of China. In August 2014, he became the first Asian to receive the Federation of International Translators' Aurora Borealis Prize for “outstanding translation of fiction literature”.
Xu helped bridge Chinese and western culture by translating Chinese classics into English and French, and vice versa(反之亦然). Xu's passion for translation lasted until the end of his life, just as the words say—“Love once begun, will never end.”
