Avi Wortis, known simply as Avi, writes historical novels. Historical novels mix historical facts with story-tell-ing skills. These stories took place in the past. The main characters are not always real; they exist only in stories. Avi decided to become a writer when he was a student in senior high school. This was quite a decision because he did not write well in school. He had a problem called dysgraphia, a writing disability. The problem caused people to spell words wrongly. Avi always enjoyed reading. He read many types of books as a child. Avi believed that reading is the most important activity for a person who wants to be a writer.
Avi also believes that strong characters make strong stories. He creates characters that can help to bring his ideas to life. His books often deal with questions about life. Writing stories lets him explore many sides of a subject. His favorite part is to make improvements in his writing. For him the hardest part is writing the first draft(草稿).
Avi's first book was published in 1970. He has since written more than 45 books. Most of them are for young-adult readers. Besides historical novels, he writes comedies (喜剧), short stories about adventures, animals and so on. The Fighting Ground, which was published in 1984, is an example of Avi's historical novels. This attractive story takes place during the American Revolutionary War.
1. We can learn from Paragraph 2 ________.
A. why Avi liked reading
B. how Avi became a writer
C. how Avi developed characters
D. why Avi decided to become a writer
2. We can learn from the text that Avi ________.
A. seldom changes his first drafts when writing
B. published his first story in 1984
C. believes in the importance of good characters
D. thinks reading is not important for writers
3. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce a writer of historical novels.
B. To show how a historical novel is written.
C. To describe an important historical novel.
D. To discuss how to become a writer.

If you are invited to a wedding, baby shower or other celebrations, you will be expected to bring a gift. Unless you know the host very well, the gift should be modest in value, about $25 or so.
For a wedding, the bride will have “registered ( 登 记 )” at one or two local department stores, indicating the items she prefers. You can buy the couple a gift that isn’t listed, but most people buy something listed on the registry (记录簿). If you buy an item listed on the registry, be sure to tell the store that you are doing this, so that the couple doesn’t receive duplicate (重复的) gifts. For a baby shower, bring a gift appropriate for a newborn baby.
If you wish to give a gift when you leave to return to your country, the best gift is something unique to your country. It does not need to be especially valuable or rare. Possibilities include a book about your country, an inexpensive piece of handicraft(手工艺品)or art, or something else that reflects your culture. If the children collect coins and stamps, they would be very pleased with a set of your country’s coins or a selection of stamps from your country.
If you owe a debt of deep gratitude to an American host family, a common way of repaying it is to take the family to a form of entertainment, such as baseball, basketball, or a good restaurant.
Gift giving is not as important in America as it is in other countries, so there is nothing wrong with not giving a gift. If you need help, talk to a salesperson at a department store. Tell them about the person who will be receiving the gift and the reason for the gift, and they will help you find something appropriate.
4. Why is collecting coins mentioned in the third paragraph?
A. To show the important role of coins as gifts.
B. To stress the popularity of coin collecting in America.
C. To give an example of selecting a unique gift.
D. To explain the relation between coins and culture.
5. What does the author intend to do in Para. 4?
A. Introduce a way to show gratitude.
B. Add some background information.
C. Summarize(总结) the previous paragraphs.
D. Recommend some family-friendly activities.
6. The writer develops the passage mainly by ______.
A. using numbers
B. giving examples
C. giving reasons
D. telling stories
7. Which can serve as a title for the text?
A. How to select a gift
B. Gift giving in America
C. Where to buy a gift
D. Celebrations in America

Would you carry around an electronic ID, not in your pocket, but in your body? Does this idea scare you or make you feel safe?
The first computer ID chip that could be planted under a person's skin might be marketed very soon. Developed by Applied Digital, an American technology company based in Florida, the device (发明物) could meet the need for public security after the September 11 attacks. For airports, nuclear power plants and other high security facilities, the immediate effects are obvious. The technology could help put an end to false ID cards, because it would be difficult to remove and copy a tiny computer chip. The chip is as small as a grain of rice. The technology would also allow satellites to track a person's every movement and store medical records.
These uses are already attracting interest for tasks like fighting against kidnappings, or helping with medical operations.
But some people are afraid of the loss of privacy.
"You always have to think about what the device could be used for tomorrow," said Lee Tien, a senior privacy lawyer in the United States.
"At first a device is used for applications we all agree are good, but then it slowly starts being used for more than it was intended," he said.
However, Applied Digital says it will soon apply for government permission for the device. It says that the first people to use the chip will be volunteers.
Getting the implant (植入物) would go something like this:
A person or company buys the chip from Applied Digital for about US $200. And the company encodes it with the desired information. The customer then takes the chip to their doctor, who can plant it with a large needle. The device has no power supply, rather it is activated (激活) by a scanner running across the skin above it. Without a scanner, the chip cannot be read.
Even with the privacy concern, some are already eager to use the product. Jell Jacobs from Florida hopes to become the first buyer of the chip to store his medical records. Suffering from a serious illness, he wants to make sure doctors can help him quickly. Eight Latin American companies have also shown interests in the device. It could help to find any tourists who are kidnapped.
8.The best title for the passage is ______.
A. Why Is the New ID Necessary
B. Getting a New Kind of ID Under Your Skin
C. An Advertisement for Chips
D. Where to Buy the Chip
9.Which of the following is true according to the text?
A. In some airports and factories such device is already being used.
B. The information on the chip can be read when it has its power supply.
C. The technology could help put an end to false ID cards.
D. The first computer ID chip has already come into the market.
10.What is the advantage with the electronic ID according to the passage?
A. It can store people's medical records and help with medical operations.
B. With this people will have no fear of losing privacy.
C. It's cheap to buy and easy to get.
D. It is developed by Applied Digital in Florida.
11.What can we learn about Jeff Jacobs?
A. He's a worker in Applied Digital, a company in Florida.
B. He's a doctor who helps plant chips on people.
C. He fears if he uses the chip he will lose privacy.
D. He's suffering from a serious illness and wants to buy the chip.

One morning last week I looked out of my study window and saw that it was a fine day. No, it was a glorious (极好的) day: the sun shone down from the sky without even a single cloud.
But later that day, hard at work at my desk, I heard a loud drumming noise on the roof. Turning to the window, I saw that the sky was the colour of charcoal (木炭). Rain was beginning to fall; two minutes later the rain became hail (冰雹); at some point, the hail became snow. Rain, hail or snow, it was all wet, making rivers of water.
This story will give you some idea about the weather in Britain. It's extremely variable. Go ahead with your picnic in the local park by all means, but don't assume that because the sun is shining now, it will be when you open your pack of sandwiches; better take an umbrella, just in case.
The weather in Britain is by no means always bad. The weather can just seem a lot like a person who has a lot of mood swings.
This is one of the biggest reasons why the British talk so often about the weather: it's handy. Wherever there are strangers standing or sitting close together, talk cannot be avoided, and the conversation focuses on the weather: "Yes, the weather has been good, hasn't it? Three whole days of sunshine this May!" or "What shocking weather we've been having!" The unreliability of the weather is something that every Brit can agree on. That makes it a safe topic of conversation.
Thus, the weather's unpredictability is actually a plus for the British, a very useful bit of our culture. Even those with different opinions on everything else in the world, such as the argument in the UK about membership of the European Union, can talk about the weather without it leading to a shouting match. Long live rainstorms in mid-July!
12.Why did the writer write this article?
A. To describe his own experience of the different weather in Britain.
B. To remind people to take an umbrella whenever they have to go out in Britain.
C. To prove the uncertainty of the weather in Britain.
D. To describe the weather and the way people talk about the weather in Britain.
13.What is the main characteristic of British weather?
A. Changeability. B. Stability.
C. Lack of sunshine. D. Continuous rain.
14.Why do the British often start conversations by talking about the weather?
A. Because they seldom trust the weather forecast.
B. Because the variable weather is a safe topic of conversation.
C. Because they are all interested in predicting weather.
D. Because they like complaining about the terrible weather.
15.What is the author's attitude towards the weather in Britain?
A. Negative. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Positive.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个150词左右的的故事.
The Missing Plane MH370
All the sand here is white. It feels wonderfully fresh and moist beneath my withered brown
feet as I walk upon the barren land. I have made it a habit to make a complete tour of the region
each day at dawn. It is nice to have something to do.
Like each day, without fail, my first observation is my plane upon which my crew and I
embarked on the mission to locate the missing plane MH370 of Malaysia, over the southern Indian Ocean. The voyage reflected hopelessness in itself because it had been
well over a year since the plane had gone missing.
As we approached the area where the MH370's radar signals had last emanated from, we
encountered a strange cloud phenomenon—a tunnel shaped wind loomed up menacingly straight
ahead of us. Like excess water gushing into a gutter, our plane flew directly into it, scraping its wings on the way. All of the electromagnetic instruments malfunctioned, and the magnetic compass spun inexplicably. Nobody had any idea as to what was going on. As
the tunnel's end caught our eye shot,we expected to see clear blue skies; instead a Terraincognita
greeted our eyesight. The sky was gray, and a small white strip of land outshining the dark green water around it, lay underneath us.
Without resting, I trod ahead with my feet sinking in the sand of unknown origin. My planed parts stretched up to 2.75 kilometers, so I measured. The last component to be spotted was the
landing gear of the plane, which deserted us the earliest.
I ordered the pilots to land, because we were running low on fuel. The journey through the mystical tunnel had taken about five hours. Gazing from above, the land seemed solid, but we were caught unawares when our plane approaching at 120 knots descended into the sand. A major
change followed, which changed the entire body of the plane.
After a research of twenty one days, I am assured now that I am the sole survivor of the wreckage. On my first day here, I discovered some blood on the sands, without dead bodies.
Paragraph 1:
Maybe they had sunk within the earth or some other planet perhaps. Yet every day I hope to see a companion, dead or alive, whom I could lament with or grieve for.________________
