Listening (15 - 20 mins)A. Draw images based on what you hear. (PPT 7-16)T plays the audio on the page. Ss sketch images match the audio, or images can answer the question. (This activity is not testing Ss’ drawing skill. But just help them think as English native speakers. They just think what did the speaker say, and draw what they hear or the answer, they don’t have to translate everything into Chinese.)T can let students explain their drawings, to check their understanding. (T don’t just Ss’ drawing skill. If you cannot tell what they draw, just ask them. Encourage Ss to express themselves in their own word. Remember, there’s no right or wrong drawing. T should be flexible) Practice listening to an extend passage (PPT 18-19) Pre-listening: Before T plays the audio. Let students read the passage first (don’t show the answer). Ask students: “What is the passage about?” (Once a student answers, T asks why he/she come out with that thought? Ss should provide evidence from the text. If Ss have different opinions, it would be an opportunity to discuss in class. They can raise their points. )During listening:a. Predict what kind of word(s) might be filled in for each blank.b. Listen to the passage after the above discussion. Ss write down the answer on their answer sheet. Then share with the class. After listening: Sentence unscramble.(PPT 20-21)Students read the passage again. This time, some of the sentences are scrambled. Ss need to make it correct. Then read out loud. Act / Drama(PPT 23-34) (20-25 mins)We are going to learn to perform an Act or a Drama. I would like to recommend two dramas: (Roald Dald’s )Matilda and Cats. I will use some of the scenes and movie clips in them as examples. - key elements of an Act or a Drama. They include stage set up, casts, music and etc. We will talk about these three things today. And we will focus more on casts. Stage set up
- Decorate the stage to build up the environment based on the scene of the act, so as that audiences can see the place where did the drama talked about. Sometimes, also use different light to setup the mood.
- T shows pictures of dramas. Let students think where the drama is. What do they feel about the mood?
- Ss read the act in the text book. Based on scene 1-3, Ss draw the scene, and how will they do the stage setup. Casts
- Actors in a drama. As an actor, what do you need to do to build up the character you act?
- Makeup: casts’ makeup shows how a character looks like. We can see if the character is beautiful or ugly, thin or fat, tall or short...
- The costume is what a character wears. We can feel the character is neat or dirty, or how he/ she is,
- Voice: the way or tone a character speaks. We can feel the characteristic through characters’ speaking. From the tone, we can feel the character is angry or happy, kind or sneaky...
- Action: It shows how a character’s personality. We can feel if the character is lazy or active, and the action can match with the tone.
Sometimes, we can see people act not as what they say.
EXAMPLES:
- Ss discuss the characters they can see on PPT 28.
For example: the teacher in Matilda. The actor is a man. His makeup makes him a female. “She” is big and tall. “She” wears a coat like a captain. Maybe “SHE” is a teacher very strict and treat Ss like soldiers.
Ss try to guess the rest characters form their makeup and costume.
- PPT 29, how can the voice show the characteristic of a character? Watch the movie clip. Discuss What do you feel about the voice of the teacher and students?
- PPT 30, watch two movie clips. These are two different scenes of Matilda. Children are same, but their action in these two scenes are different. How do they feel about these two scenes? What makes you think so?
Music.
Music also can help to create the mood. But it’s optional if we just practice the language.
- We can listen to the music in PPT 31. Discuss how the music creates the mood. Practice
- PPT 32-3, Let’s read the act on the text book. Let’s discuss:
- In each scenes, how many main characters?
- What would they possibly wear?
- How do they feel?
- If you are the character, how is your tone?
- Try to practice in group.
Summary (5 mins) We practiced listening to new words. We practiced listening to a long paragraph. We learned important elements in an act or a drama. We tried to direct our own acts -板书设计Let Ss do the listening task on the blackboard.课后作业Act out the play in groups.教学反思 Proactive listening needs motivation.
